I want to *eventually* go up a mountain ridge in my county. This particular ridge is steep as hell (the steepest one I know of). The road rises 1600 feet over 3+ miles with a grade of around 30%. Is this just too steep? I tried on my 7th day of riding, and could only go about 1/3rd of a mile. I also am a little worried that my brakes would fail.

1600/3/5280~.1  10% is steep.  30% is basically a wall not a hill.  Good luck.  I ride up 13-15% with a 30x25 granny gear.   You could basically walk up the hill at the same pace.

Ummm....Tom's math is right...it's a 10% average grade, which is doable over 3 miles, in an 39-23, 39-27 will make it easier.  I've ridden a hill that averages 14% for 2 1/2 miles, with some spots 21 or 22%, and that's clearly the limit for most normal riders, myself included.  If you're not a billy goat, at about 21-22% you 1) start walking, 2) fall over, 3) weave.

I'd be VERY surprised if there were spots in the road that were 30%.   If you can make it up the hill, fine....but coming down, it's not safe for cars, trucks, or road bikes.  I'm pretty aggressive on the bike, and I wouldn't touch that one.  One little pebble, one sneeze, one crack in the pavement and *poof*, you're over the top, and you're going to slide a LOOOONG way.  No, thanks.

If there are spots of 30% grade, and you really want to ride it, pull out the MTB.  It's safer.

The most I've ever seen was about 18%, and that was a beast.  10% is still a solid climb, but doable with the right gearing (and fitness).

Funny you posted this on March 25, which this year was the official date of the Fargo Street Hill Climb in LA.  Check out last year's pix at

What road is this?

There are some very steep climbs in VA. I know of a couple that go up to 16%, on gravel noless.

What sort of gearing do you have?

Rise over the run. It's calculated above, rise is 1600 feet, run is 3 miles at 5280 feet per mile=15,840 feet.

%grade = 1600 ÷ 15840 = 10.1%

If you cannot ride up a hill at a reasonable cadence then the hill is too steep. Turning the cranks at super low cadence puts a lot of stress on your knees - for me that would be the biggest limiting factor.

That being said I regularly ride up hills with average grades of 8-15% and section with grades over 20%.

my family goes to the virgin islands for vacation, where there are no road standards. Me and my dad run while we are down there, and there is one hill that's SO steep. It goes up 1150ft in 9/10 of a mile, which is like a 24% grade. This hill looks like the outer limit of what someone could ride on a bike. so maybe 25% is topped out, unless your rasmussen, or a billy goat.

Ok, I got the 30% grade from clicking on one of the red dots on the road in bt's mapping program. Either its off, or that was just one very short section. The address for the road is: tanners ridge rd, luray, virginia

I've done the Mt. Washington hill climb in NH which is just short of a vertical mile in elevation gain over a distance of 7.6 miles.  And to top it off, about 30% of the road is hard packed gravel with the rest being paved.

When I used the route planner it showed 211 feet in .75 miles.
Either you made an error or I'm at the wrong road. I know the area
and there are some BIG hills so maybe it just gave a short section or
something. I plan on riding the Skyline Drive area a bunch this summer.

Yeah, I want to hit the Drive too, I just have to work up the courage to tackle the 211 bypass and the mountain that leads to it. Or maybe I'll just drive up and park

EDIT: Double Iron!? That is badass! Have fun at Lake Anna, it's awesome.

If you're not a major cyclist, ANY ride rated moderate or above.  (Finally figured this out after downloading some various routes from some different cycling clubs - going on them and wondering if I was going to die.)

Cyclists would rate Mt. Everest as a "somewhat challenging" climb.

Cool

Thanks. So there is what I would consider a steep hill near me but it is only a hundred yards or so. Is there an easy way to figure the grade?

BTW I read your past races DANG you are a fast big bear, CONGRATS!
