So when we all get in, who wants to share a condo?

I'm in.

But only if I don't have to share a room with a hippie.

Would it make you feel better if I wore the Borat suit?

I love my wife, but if I win the lottery, I'm quitting my job and moving to Kona to train full time...

Okay, I'm a big talker, but I reserve the right to take out a second mortgage to pay for the team of trianers it'll take to get me around that bike course. I'll see y'all there.

I think if you buy into the Passport club, the odds are somewhere between 1:5 to 1:10.

I'm in too.  I recieved an Ironman ID in the mail today.  It's for also joining the Passport Club.  They'll do anything to make an extra buck.  And, I pay the extra to get to Kona. Cool

JeepFleeb - 2007-04-02 4:19 PM Jim, did you ever hear back from NA Sports about last year's IMFL being able to validate a lottery slot?

Oh...yeah, I did. They said *any* sanctioned iron distance event within 12 months of race day will validate your spot, so IMFL is good.

Jim ... knowing that you are a numbers guy, how'd you derive the odds above?

I too bought into the relatively worthless "Passport Club" to increase my odds - but did not know that the difference would be that significant.

I don't know if there are any numbers published by the WTC, but those are the numbers I've always "heard".

They seem to be pretty hush hush about how many lottery entrants they really get.  Without that number its impossible to determine the odds.  If a master-googler like myself can't find it, its probably not public info.  The only stat I found was 5% chance.  Can't remember where I saw that, but it wasn't active.com or any official m.dot site.

I'm in the International category too (with passport club), so I'm not even competing against you guys for a spot.  And I'm sure the odds are probably lower for international.

Well I got my name in it because well if you are not it in you can not win it

I did NOT join the passport club because I figure I need to burn of year of not getting in but you never know stranger things have happened. If I do get int well then you just have to go for it.

I just excited oneway or another I will know. Will my life become a living hell, dream come true, or can I just go back to bed.

I wish the lottery would be done sooner because it gives a winner more time to train knowing what he is training for. Trying to train just in case is not very motivating.

It sucks because I want to buy a new bike because mine is not a bike but I want to buy based on my needs and not sure if I need a bike for 112 miles or just 56.

Personally, I wouldn't enter the lottery, no matter what the odds, if I wasn't completely confident I was ready for a full Ironman.

I'm training for Ironman Canada on August 26th anyway.  If I do get a lottery spot I think it will just mean an adjustment to my taper strategy, and then keeping my fitness up for another 7 weeks after the first Ironman.  The thought of doing 2 Ironmans in 7 weeks actually scares the heck out of me, to the point where I am almost hoping my name doesn't get drawn.

I know the feeling. I feel swimming 2.4 miles then running 26.2 does not scare me. Its the biking 112 miles that does. I guess got to get over my fear of the bike and I will be ok.

The problem with Kona is that if you suck like me chances of getting in is so slim that you have to keep trying and if you get it you just have to make the most of it. Of course the more people like me do that the harder it is for everyone.

I put my name in because it would be a dream come true. Not like the dream I had last night I lost 5 minutes for blocking when I had no one behind me.

from a post on ST:

In 2001 there were 2833 US entrants - 2275 Passport and 558 General. 100 winners were drawn from the 2275 Passport members (odds of winning 1:22.25). The losing Passport members were then added to the General entrants from which 50 more competitors were drawn (50 from 2733, odds of winning 1:54.17).

Internationally, there were 901 of which 25 winners were drawn from the 481 Passport members (odds of 1:18.76), and then 25 more were drawn from the remaining Passport and all the general entries (odds of 1:34.56)

In 2004 we had the following: there were 2,584 U.S. passport applicants, 840 U.S. general applicants and 2,484 passport applicants rolled over from the first drawing. There were 568 internaional passport applicants, there were 382 international general applicants and 543 passport applicants rolled over from the first drawing.

You also get a very low quality credit card thingie that lists your completed NA sports events on the back.

So that's at least a quarter cent of value.

I just appreciate the fact you can only buy one entry. Judging by how much the ebay spots go for every year, I definitely couldn't compete with the rich folks who want in.

I am ready to do it if I get in, it would just require a little different bike training than Ironman WA (i.e. I might have to get on a hill occasionally, or I'd be carrying my bike up to the turnaround).

How cool would it be if other sports or events had this? The Masters? Olympic Marathon (or swim events)? Other events like these were our relative suckiness wouldn't affect the pros' experience? If nothing else, it would make great TV...

EXACTLY - it is making it harder for everyone else!!!!

I'm not entered in the lottery, because there are others who are more deserving right now. Wht didn't you wait until you were more confident in your cycling abilities?

I'm guessing a Kona slot would be pretty good motivation to trian well.
