I was having a nervous moment this afternoon - my first tri is going to be september 19th and I'm scared about the swim. I hadn't registered for it yet, so I figured I'd register to try and force myself to get over being nervous/force myself to train harder. But... I'm still scared crapless about the swim. I've done one open water swim and the open water didn't bother me, but as I was by myself, I just swam back and forth outside the beach area. I've been able to swim 1200 or so meters in the pool, but that is with brief rests every once in a while... how can I get myself ready to do the 400m without stopping.. when I'm in the pool, I touch bottom at the ends of the lanes quite often... I'm not concerned about speed or anything, just death.

you can turn on your back and/or start breast stroke both of which allow you to keep your head out and fell more secure.

Also if you stick to teh outside of teh pack you will be closer to the kayakers...

Good Luck.

Ah, I know this feeling well, too. Don't sweat it. About 1/4 of my swim last weekend was backstroke, and I saw others doing backstroke, breaststroke, and one brave soul even did the butterfly. Heck, dog paddle if you have to! If you can do 1200 even with brief rests, you'll be so excited and motivated, that 400 will pass pretty quickly. You've got a little time, so start pushing yourself to do 500 at a time with no breaks. Then, when the 19th gets here, you'll know you can do it all at once.

Good luck!

Just one more voice to tell you that you're not alone out there! I can do 75 yards freestyle, then have to switch to breaststroke for 25 yards to catch my breath. As long as you have a recovery stroke like that, or can float, or can dog paddle or tread water, you'll be all right.

You may want to practice switching between strokes over the next two weeks...

I don't know. I don't have anyone to swim with and even though I can push myself on the bike and on the run, for some reason on the swim I don't know how to motivate/force myself to do the 400m or 500m or longer without stopping... I've been trying to do just a brief touch on the wall without letting my feet touch the ground - in my mind, although I am stopping for a moment, it isn't the same as putting my feet down...

bear - the only other stroke I can really do is the backstroke... and I'm afraid of not seeing where I'm going, but I guess that is better than drowning...

It's really hard for me to picture how long 400m is going to be out in the open water compared with swimming it in 25m lengths...

I HATE being this nervous about the swim. I'm afraid to have anyone come watch me just in case I don't finish the swim.

Ugh? What do you have against polar bears?

Just a new look I'm trying out for the winter...

Look at it this way: 400 meters is JUST ONE lap around the track. On your worse day you could do one lap, and make it look easy.

yeah I can do 400m around the track, but I am touching the ground with my feet...I think my psychological fear of not being able to touch the bottom is what really really really scares me...

I'm trying out new avatars. David Zen sent me this one. Anybody has any other suggestions, PM me.

Maybe I'll do a new poll "The Avatar Behind the bear," and have y'all vote!

I think this one's appropriate for you. Not that the urinal one isn't...

The seal is pretty much anyone. It's a metaphor for the board, really. ;-)

OK... Once you get in and start, it shouldn't be that bad... If you think you'd feel better further away from people, let others start ahead of you and sort of hang toward the back. Then, just swim. Freestyle, breast-stroke, backstroke, float, whatever... just concentrate on swimming in the water, and making some sort of forward progress. It doesn't have to be fancy or pretty, it just has to keep your head above water and moving in a general forward fashion.

I don't know what lake you're swimming in... most lakes around Wisconsin (I've found, at least) are pretty clear... they shouldn't be too murky, so you shouldn't have trouble seeing... not that you will be doing much peering around underwater anyway, but sometimes it's a mental thing... not being able to see through the water....not being able to see the bottom.

Don't psyche yourself out. You've come this far. It's really not THAT different from swimming in a pool. Just remember, water is water. Here, there, puddle, lake, river, pool, whatever... Move forward through that H2O.

Interesting to note, I do best when my feet aren't touching ground. I find gravity to be an unwelcome guest. I prefer swimming and biking to running any day of the week. Every day of the week. Yet sadly I spend most of my time running, as that's where I need the practice.  **SIGH**.

Which race are you doing????

who says you can't stop? you can always swim to the side and tread water. my swim coach taught me how to get into 'the sweet spot' side stroke but without the arms...slow, but steady, and getting LOTS of breath. great for when you are feeling nervous. swimming in a group is actually easier than i ever would have thought. you can do it.

I believe (though not positive) you can hold onto a support canoe or kayak without being dq'd if necessary. You might wanna check the rules.

It was allowed in the 1/2 IM I did.  Good luck!!!!

You CAN do it!!!

Here's the official USAT rule:

4.2 Bottom Contact and Resting.

A participant may stand on the bottom or rest by holding an inanimate object such as a buoy, boat, rope or floating object. Excluding the bottom, a participant shall not use any inanimate object to gain forward progress. A violation of this section shall result in a variable time penalty, unless the Head Referee in his/her sole discretion determines that (i) the violation was substantial and resulted in an unfair time advantage, or (ii) the violation constituted endangerment under Section 3.4(l).

Soooooo, NO excuses now - get out there and DO IT!!!!!
