newbe question: two piece / one piece

Extreme Veteran  532   Munich, Germany |  Subject: newbe question: two piece / one piecehey there... i was planning to wear a tri top and tri shorts for my first tri in june... yesterday i overheard two triathletes talking about the swim and one said that you can't wear a two piece suit if you can't wear a wetsuit... of course i didn't want to admit that i was listening and therefore i didn't want to ask why... is it true? do i need a one piece suit when i can't wear a wetsuit and if so why? thanks for your help! |

I doubt it's a rule. My best guess is that two piece suits tend to be draggy. I wear a two piece suit and the one time I've done a non-wetsuit race I could tell the suit was adding drag. A well fitting one-piece would probably just work better. |

Master 1265 CT | Subject: RE: newbe question: two piece / one piece its a pain to use the portolet in a one piece  I wore tri shorts (DeSoto) and a tri top (also DeSoto) and had no troubles with the swim sans wetsuit. Make sure they fit well (snug). Its just a matter of personal preference really and I am sure there would be sligthly less drag with a one piece tri suit, but its surely not a rule that you must wear a one piece suit. |

When you get in the water, the fabric will tend to loosen a bit, so what was comfortable dry may end up being too baggy after the swim. |

I had the same question you have now. I thought that I was going to have to get a tri suit, but the only problem was that it didn't fit me the same up top "with the girl" than it did around my bum. So I just wore a sprots bra that I could swim in, and tri bottoms that I could do the whole event in. Swimming with my bra on freaked me out at first, but I got used to it. No one at the even said anything that I couldn't wear what I was wearing and I did fine. I put on a sport tank top when I got to my bike at T1. I hope this helps. |

Well, nobody's going to say anything -- as long as you're not actually naked, there's nothing specifically in the rules about what you have to wear at a tri. And there's people wearing everything at a race; everything from $150 trisuits to $500 wetsuits to $5 basketball shorts to black speedo "banana hammock" swim trunks on guys or two-piece hawaiian flower print bikinis on girls. You name it, somebody's wearing it. |

Like bike shorts, don't wear anything under tri shorts, otherwise you'll increase the risk of chafing. While the padding may seem thin...it's really enough for your race. I even have some tri shorts that I train in now even though they don't have that much padding.....the padding is just in the right spot. |

It's not the padding I'm concerned about but the fact that I can see thru them. |
