Total Time = 1h 24m 42s
Overall Rank = 34/342
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/24
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 and had a bowl of cereal and bottle of Ensure. Drove to meet 2 guys from our training group for the ride to Orono. Stayed in the van for much of the time to keep warm.
Event warmup:

10 minutes easy running with a few striders mixed in. Just before the start I heard someone say "Birkierunner?" - it was fellow BT member mndiver who recognized me from my avatar. Neat to meet another BT'er in person!
Run
  • 18m 27s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Trained through another one of these early races. Legs didn't feel too bad but not race ready.
Transition 1

Bike
  • 47m 13s
  • 17 miles
  • 21.60 mile/hr
Comments:

The wind was pretty strong. I need a TT bike and aero wheels!! The top 2 guys in front of me in my AG killed me on the bike. I dropped my chain in the first half mile - only the 2nd time it's ever happened in my life. I had to stop after just cresting a hill so I lost a lot of momentum when I had to stop to put the chain back on.
What would you do differently?:

Not drop my chain - dummy.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Run
  • 17m 20s
  • 2.65 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt OK on the second run leg but couldn't catch anyone in front of me.
Post race
Warm down:

15 minute easy run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Trained through this race so wasn't well rested. Just another workout.

Event comments:

Gear West Duathlon is a great reace and Kevin O'Connor and GW staff really put a lot of effort into it. Post-race activities (grilled hot dogs and tons of equipment giveaways) are excellent. I didn't repeat as winning one of the raffle prizes like I did last year. I could have used the Zipp 808's they gave away!!

I adjusted leg distances so that pace per mile running and mph on the bike matched what results said.

Although I had extra clothes on for the race due to the cold temps, you can tell I'm packing a few ice cream pounds in the attached pictures!!

Those are some smokin' fast times.  Sorry about the lack of raffle prizes for you this year.    Have a great time looking for that TT bike...

That was the very first time I wore the helmet on the bike.  I really liked it - cut down on noise of the wind in my ears.  Wish I knew a way to quantify the benefits of wearing it.

Nice race...the Midwest Series is one of the most competative, and you did extremely well.

Are you doing Apple this weekend?

Nice race.  Great second run!

Definately need to at least get yourself some aero wheels to go with the helmet (I need to add the helmet now).

Great job at the race.  I think everyone was extremely jealous of that lady that won the Zipp 808's.  In my minds eye I could actually see those wheels on my bike.  I guess I'll just have to win them at Apple this week.

Thanks!  Yeah, I was hoping I was going to win them myself.  I was drooling all over the Felt DA at the GW store afterwards that had the special 808s on them (just a color scheme to match the bike).  I really didn't want to win the 303s but I guess I could have sold them if I had.  That is the great thing about this race series - a new raffle every race.  Good luck at Apple!!
