Lake Geneva Extreme Sports

Sunny
Total Time = 3h 06m 21s
Overall Rank = 251/378
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 46/59
Pre-race routine:

Up early, rack bike on the car, respond to wife's question, "Why do they start so early?"
Coffee, water, peanut butter on half a bagel.

Event warmup:

run about 10 minutes, stretch a little, find Chris and Cindy. Set up transition area.
Swim
  • 35m 46s
  • 1500 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Chris loaned me a pair of clear goggles. This made sighting much better. Also a tremendous help was the swim workout with Chris and Cindy a week earlier.
Wave start was crowded and the route got really crowded when the 1/2 IM and sprint groups all met up close to the exit.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

Bike exit was crowded as well, plus a sharp left turn out of transition made the exit a bottle neck of bikes.
What would you do differently?:

Work on faster transition times.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 43s
  • 25 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Riding the route ahead of time was a big help. Several turns and hills would have been very difficult if not planned for ahead of time. Overall, I like the route and would do it again as a regular training ride.
Transition 2
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

Couldn't find my transition spot!!! I brought the wrong color towel. It was dark while setting up so I didn't think to check which one I brought.
What would you do differently?:

bring a brightly colored towel.
Run
  • 1h 00m 9s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked part way up one of the first hills and one small hill on the return.
What would you do differently?:

Not much other than train on hills more often.
Post race
Warm down:

jump back in the lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too slow in transition.
Swim harder, run faster.

Event comments:

Pre-race registration was very slow, long line to one desk to pick up race packet. Course talk was in a crowded room with no PA system. Race day was much of the same; crowded, many running late, race directors without a working PA system. 1/2 IM start had to be called back and re-started. Other than that, the bike course was well suited for me, the run was a major challenge. I plan on being back next year.

Great report Don!  I forgot to put the false start in mine, oh well.  Did chris send you the pictures?  They turned out good.  that sunrise was beautiful, I was too nervous to notice it that morning.

If you ever do want to do that as a training ride give me a call, I would love to do it it's a nice course.  The 1/2 IM course was pretty nice too.

I'll be there again next year too (for the OLY, not the 1/2~)

I'm thinking this is going to be my Half next year... I've heard it was disorganized, but the scenery almost makes it worth it.

Nice job!!! See you there next year......

It's a date!
although, I'm not doing a 1/2 IM at this one. Running (or walking as the case may be) the "killer hill" twice just hurts thinking about it.
And yes this is my last race of the season. My run training partner is down for at least two months and we're moving on the 27th of this month. So once again, life is getting in the way of triathlon training.

Good job on the race. I'm glad you commented on riding the course beforehand; not a lot of people mention it and its a helpful tool that's sometimes overlooked.
