Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5 a.m. packed up the car and drove to New Found Lake (about 30 minutes from where we were staying). Had a banana and two muffins on the drive up.
Swim
  • 37m 31s
  • 2187 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went very well. Foudn some one to draft off of for almost the entire distance. The surf got a little choppy on the way back to shore, but otherwise was a fairly easy swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

No issues.
Bike
  • 3h 46m 57s

Comments:

Worst ride ever. I was cold getting out of the water but didn't think much of it and just pulled on my socks with my feet still wet and jumped on the bike wearing only my shorts and top. As the ride progressed I kept getting colder and colder (despite the fact that my heart rate was in the 160s). By the end of the second loop I could no longer feel my feet. I would wiggle my toes and there was no correpsonding feeling. I though about stopping several times, but really wanted to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up. Gress appropriately. Dry my feet off.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I got into transition and took off my shoes and my feet were pure white. At this point I was crying from the cold. Chris saw me and my lips were bright purple. He made me go see one of the EMTS who determined that i had hypotherma. They then stripped me down, wrapped me in blankets, made me drink hot water and rubbed me down for about an hour until I warmed up. I felt liek a total loser for not finishing and creid for most of the time.

oh man, that sucks!  I hear ya on being cold, I was freezing all day but apparently not as much as you    When I crossed the finish line I took the fleece shirt right off my husband's back.

Even tho you're bummed about not finishing, yesterday is now one more weapon in your tri arsenal.   I was not dressed correctly for yesterday's weather and neither were you.  I'd bet dollars to donuts that NEITHER of us will ever make THAT mistake again!

Chin up and go find another race to do.

geez, that's a bummer! I wondered what happened to you

It was pretty raw out there although personally, I never felt cold until somewhere toward the end of the run when I was getting close to being completely out of gas.

In general, this was a pretty tough course and the fact that you toed the line and got through the swim and the bike is quite an accomplishment.

Maybe one day the sun will actually shine on Mooseman!

You gave it all you had, and that's really all you can ask. If they pull you off the course, that's not quitting.

With it pushing 90 on Saturday, I don't know that anyone was thinking about it being too cold. Funny how quick that can change.

I hear you on the cold.  I froze in the lake, and although I managed to warm up on the bike and run, I struggled to warm up after I finished, despite wearing several layers.  My wife too, and she never got into the water.  Bummer on the hypothermia, but you had an awesome swim!!

I kept waiting to see you out on the run course, but this explains it . I'm sorry you got hypothermia, but I gotta give you credit for finishing the bike feeling like that.

it sounds like you did the best you could given the hand you were dealt. Not being able to finish because the EMT's though it was wise isn't your falut they must look outside the race and worry about you as a whloe.. not about you finishing every race, every training, every day we learn something new..

now keep warm and plan your next race

Sorry the race didn't go too well for you, but really - not much you can do about hypothermia!  It's not like it was for a lack of training.  I'm sure it was still hard, but hang in there.  Best of luck for the rest of the season.

We were out there marshaling 1 mile from transition at Frosty's....and we were cold and as the morning progressed and it didn't warm up we kept wondering how folks were dealing with the cold. Two guys raced w/o tops...nuts.

You have to take care of your health first....

How you feeling now?

I'll see you at Patriot right?

Sorry to hear about your race, but in the long run you did the right thing.  You need to take care of yourself and a race is not worth doing damage to your body.  Next year you can come back and kick the Moose's A$$....
