Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Elkhart Lake Multisports
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 34s
Overall Rank = 87/296
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 10/23
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at about 5:15.... roll over.... wait 'til 5:20... then get up.
Swim
  • 05m 57s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Went out o.k., only hit by a couple of people. Kept a person or 2 on my left side, so was pretty straight going out, but then almost hit the turn-around bouy, so I didn't have anyone on my left side coming back in. Ended up in no-man's land a couple times on the way back, almost closer to the people swimming out than back in. Re-adjusted to get into straight line back into beach, and still turned left. Gotta get better trying to swim a little straighter. Even tried sighting techniques that I worked on over the past week, and STILL went left.....at least it was only on the second half of the swim. Turbo-Donkey NASCAR, here I come..
What would you do differently?:

turn left only twice rather than 3 1/2 times....
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

Looking back at my time, I think I may have taken a nap in T1. Wow, now THAT's slow...

Wetsuit stuck on heels, socks also still tough to put on. Think I need some transition training..... Know anyone PeterAK??
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Bike
  • 42m 42s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty happy with bike. Didn't fall off, and passed more people than I was passed by, so I figured that was a good thing. Felt more comfortable with shifting today than I had in the past, I'm sure thanks due to the training on the course before the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, I guess. Probably should have drank more, but that affected run much more than the bike (see below for mini-bonk)
Transition 2
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

T2 was 15/23 in AG, 207/296 overall..... Again, transition terrible..... at least I am consistent.
What would you do differently?:

207/296? Really??? Can I be ANY slower in transitions??
Run
  • 23m 39s
  • 2.49 miles
  • 09m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a really tough time for first mile of course. Nutrition?? What nutrition? Felt like my feet were moving, but I wasn't going anywhere. I looked down, twice, saw my feet were moving, but was passed by a small caterpillar on the road. That's o.k., we got to the top of the hill, and I squashed him.. That'll teach him.... On the way back, seemed to get a little better, but I don't think it was any faster, I just knew I was closer to being done. Coming around the final corner/hill, saw a bunch of people cheering. That by itself is enough to make me want to do more. Awesome feeling!!!

Finished with a roll across the finish line. You will be forever an inspiration, Blazeman.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, and drink better on the bike to prepare for run. I had become a little more accustomed to running mid-high 7's with my runs, and this seemed like forever. I guess I need to do more brick training to adjust.
Post race
Warm down:

Stopped running.

Stretched hamstrings (to pick up some gatorade), stretched calves (to reach for the bagels), stretched hips (to reach across someone for banana), and then cheered on fellow donkey's as they crossed the finish line

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time continued to churn as I didn't get faster. I figure if I can find a way to actually slow down time while I maintain my constant pace, eliminate transitions (maybe I can bike/run in my wetsuit... is there a ruling on that?), and have ANY sort of nutrition/drinking while on course (I had about 3 oz. gatorade and 3 oz. water through whole race - excluding any water taken in while trying to swim)

Event comments:

For the first triathlon for me, I guess I am pretty happy. Don't have any previous information to base performance evaluations on. I finished, and I was standing. I have NO idea on nutrition components, but I suppose that will hopefully come with time. My transitions are awful. I continue to turn left in the water. I will, however, continue with triathlons - I am pretty hooked, and loved every minute of it (except the beginning of the run). Distances continue to be determined.

Had a GREAT time with the other donkeys after race, and congrats to triDDS for WINNING the Clydesdale division!!

I knew it!!! I KNEW IT!!!! I just KNEW there was a secret handshake... as long as it doesn't involve a transition or nutrionional concerns, I'll be o.k. with it.

great job triathlete! I find taking a lawn chair into transition helps with the T1 & T2 naptime.
