Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! WOW - This group has really taken off!!!! I saw a mention of it last week and now it's real! I would love to join. What a great bunch of people. I am 48 and currently 169.5, down from a high of 198. My weight came on with pregnancies, but as my kids are 7.5 and 9 it's time to let that excuse go. I stayed home with them for about 5 years and ate out of boredom and frustration. I did two sprint tri's last summer and came in very close to last. I was glad just to finish. I signed up for an oly tri the end of Aug. and haven't trained the way I should have, but I've been good the last few weeks and am really psyched now. I'm 5'1" but very muscular, so I think that 140 is a good goal for me. I love the time frame and will lose 20 #'s by Sept. 20. Is this too ambitious a goal? I'll have to go back and check what you guys are shooting for. Hope everyone is having a great training day! Mitzi |

I haven't forgotten you all... just stuck teaching a class out of the office this week... and didn't stop by as planned because the LBS called and said my bike is ready to be picked up... so I think you'll all agree I made the right decision and blew off the uncompensated overtime and went for a ride instead. I'll get you updated thursday, and FIRST WEIGH IN is this friday... WOOO FRICKIN HOO!!!! |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! Glad to see more and more folks joining....welcome everyone. Just a question...are you guys setting realistic goals? Losing 1-2 pounds a week is the most recommended by most to lose. Women and those closer to your goal weight often lose slower. Cut calories to much, you won't have good quality workouts. It is always a balance...enough calories to work out but a negative daily amount so weight comes off ...slow is best but not well embraced by us....as we are impatient. I'd encourage you that are new to BT to use your training blog, put in your nutrition success and struggles so others in the group can check on you and leave inspires to encourage you. When you are struggling speak up as many of us have gone or may be going through the same thing...often folks just hide or disappear in tough times instead of reaching out. I'll admit it that is what I normally do. Tomorrow if weather is nice in CT storms are forecasted, my 12 year old daughter and I are going to do a sprint tri as a relay. She is going to swim & run and I'll bike as that is all I'm doing. I did go with her to the pool tonight and she practiced her 400 yd swim and swam it faster than I do and I think this is her 2nd time in the pool for the year...I swim 3x a week all year when healthy. I did try swimming with my separated shoulder...it went okay...just did 1.5 lengths but figure if I do a sprint in a couple weeks I can do it just freestyle with one arm like I do for drills...sure I'll look weird but I'll keep my shoulder happy.

Member 26 Maine | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! Wow, it's nice to see so many people joining this group! Welcome, everyone! Kathy, your point about losing too much too fast is well taken. The weight is such an easy thing to measure but personally I try not to get hung up on that number. I'm also tracking my waist size so that even if the scale doesn't change I may have numbers moving in a positive direction. I didn't gain weight instantly and I'm going to lose it instantly either. For me, deciding to do another sprint is also about making lifestyle changes which I consider the bigger challenge. If I had to finish a sprint tomorrow I'm sure I could, but I want to develop new habits and take better care of myself. This has not been a good training week for me but I've still done more in the last 2 weeks than I did in the 2 weeks before that. If I spent as much time training as I have reading about tri stuff there'd be a lot more in my training logs. Thankfully tomorrow is a new day. ps- Artemis- Love your badger. That's one my favorite pick-me-ups |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! Kathy, Good tips - I will check out the nutrition logs. I've done fitday.com and don't think I'm up to recording. My plan is to eat only whole grains, nuts, veggies, fruit, fish and chicken. I know when I'm eating something I shouldn't or eating too much. I have to focus on each choice, one choice at a time. I like the tip of making a list of reasons I want to be thin and to look at it when I am thinking about the wrong foods. Josh, You made a great choice. Thank you for doing the thread and for the nifty chart! Mitzi |

Extreme Veteran 1106 , Connecticut | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! I'm bummed that I've been training hard for a few weeks and not losing weight. I can't believe that finishing my kids ice cream and those "few" chips can make a difference. Guess reality is telling me they do!!! Also, I went back to fitday.com and put my breakfast in. Needed more protein so I input pumpkin seeds and was shocked to see that a cup = 1200 calories. I probably down at least 1/3 of a cup as a "snack" and had no idea! I should be glad I'm not gaining weight. Fitday.com is free if anyone wants to check it out. Mitzi |

Master 2235 Pacific Northwest | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! Josh, you are working too hard! (Thanks) Another WW thing that relates to what MuscleMomma says is watch out for the "BLTs"--Bites, Licks, and Tastes. They really, truly add up. Sandwich crusts, half eaten chicken nuggets, a handful of teddy grahams....I could go on and on about my normal day's diet! What I do when I feel intense food cravings come on is have a glass of water and an apple. Then if I am still hungry, eat something (relatively) healthy. I also make sure to throw away the kids' plates immediately so that they do not take on the identity of an appetizer tray. You know how in cartoons when people are starving and suddenly their pal looks like fried chicken or a hamburger? Well.....the writers must have been dieting!! So instead of dieting, I try to look at is as fueling my tank with premium fuel......psychologically it makes it easier. |

Member 15 | Subject: RE: "Brand New You"-New weight loss group! Since I'm going to be traveling for the next 10 days starting tonight, I am going to be the first one to report a weigh-in 187, 23%bf. I think it's a little off, since I didn't weigh myself the same time I usually do today...but I'll take it. Now - to make sure with this hectic travel schedule, I still get a few workouts in...am packing my running shoes and jump rope. Take care all, and hope you all are working out and losing! |

Hope we all had a good week. ** Can you make a quick change to my goal? I was ending on 9/1, but I want to play to 9/20 with you all, with a goal of 145. Thanks (and sorry to amend this late). Today's weight: 162.8, for a big change of +/- 0! OK, I shouldn't be happy, but it was a hormonal week and I'm looking for a visible drop next week. Best wishes! Kristen |

Here's to a good holiday where we will all stay on track. (And a good thing I can work from home next week/take some vacation and not be working every day less than 1 block from the Taste of Chicago). |

Starting Weight (and Last week's weight): 181 I could have done better this week, but I'm certainly not complaining with the results. As a suggestion, we might want to make weekly weigh-ins a separate thread. Makes it a little easier on the organizers. |
