TriMinnesota Series
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 30m 52s
Overall Rank = 124/241
Age Group = 36-40
Age Group Rank = 40/54
Pre-race routine:

Hung out with wife and kids. Met up with a few friends and made some new aquaintances.
Event warmup:

Rode bike about a mile, got into the pond and did some swimming.
Swim
  • 09m 19s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did like this swim. Only comment would be to add more waves. It was way too crowded. I was doing this as more of a training day so I started towards the back of the group. Had to swim through a lot of people to make decent strokes.
What would you do differently?:

Start towards the front more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

My transition times have gotten much faster than last year. No wetsuit also makes for a much faster T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 41m 57s
  • 13 miles
  • 18.59 mile/hr
Comments:

I probably pushed on the bike harder than I normally would have on a training ride. Didn't go as hard as I would normally go if competing to my max. Probably for the best, legs died on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was a great ride and a fun course.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Another good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 37m 7s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I'll preface this by saying I didn't expect much from this run. I ran a half marathon last week and did 8 miles yesterday. I knew the run would be difficult, but good lord I didn't think it would hurt this bad. My time was better than I thought it would be considering how dead my legs felt. They had 4 water stops and I walked a full minute through everyone of them.
What would you do differently?:

Taper, but like I said, this was more of a fun tri used as a training day. I knew it would hurt if I tried to push it.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my two lovely children screaming "GO DAD" as I came across the line. Got some water and waited for Kelly to cross.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No taper

Event comments:

I really liked this race. They started late because they had a LOT of race day sign-ups. Me included. I will more than likely do this one again. I really enjoyed it and thought it was well run.

Course: This was a great swim area. The water was somewhat clear and completely weed free. Beach was nice and sandy. It was a run in start. There were only 3 waves with all those people. I had a very difficult time getting into any open water and really felt slowed down by the large numbers.

Course: This was an out and back course with the longest, steepest hill I have ever climbed. I do a lot of hill work out where I live so I actually passed quite a few people. I averaged 9.8 m.p.h. going up the hill. It was over a mile long. But then, we got to go down it on the way back. WHAT A RUSH! I topped out at 39 m.p.h. but could have probably gone faster.

Nicely done, MN Diver. That hill sounds like a killer. A mile? Wow. I might need to go to Mankato sometime just to train on it.

GREAT JOB!!! Those climbs are fun to go down!! Isn't is awesome to feel like you are slowing down only to look at your computer and see you are still over 30? I like it!

I forgot to add afew critical things in report.  #1 For the first time ever I saw at least 3 people lined up for the swim wearing life jackets.  At first I thought this was kind of funny.  But then I thought "good for you"  many people won't do tri's because they are afraid of the water.  These people got past it and competed anyway.  #2 Forgot to mention Kelly and I had a chance to talk to Bridgit (freckleface) and her boyfriend at the tri.  She even went by me just as we started climbing the hill of death.  I was able to use her as pace booty for the next 8 miles or so.  Then she suddenly found another gear and disappeared into the horizon.

I have to add to the oddities of the lifejacket wearers. I was passed by a guy swimming with a pull bouy. Found that as a first.

Good job on your "training" day! Put it in the bank, and this weekend will definitely be helping you out in your coming races.

I missed the lifejacket wearers!

Great race, considering no taper.  You will taper this week, right?

Funny about the life jackets.  I take it this wasn't a USAT event?  If it was, those people better not show up in the standings.

39 mph coming down???  Sounds like it had to be the hill of death going up...

Nice job on your "training day!"

Nice 'training' race.  I believe you were thoroughly warned about the hill.   Pretty awesome bike leg considering the hill.  Yeah, Bridget has a tendency to blow by me in races too.  You're not alone.   Doesn't a 5K distance feel oh, so much better after you've run 13.1?

Great race...

Great job with the run!!  You can see how much you have improved if that is the pace you are running after logging all those miles in the week beofre AND running 8 miles the day before.

Nice job MNDiver!  I did notice the guys with life jackets too, seemed like they all knew each other.  I did not see the guy with the pull buoy.  This is a nice race.  This was my maiden triathlon last year, it was nice to go back and repeat, knowing more about what to do and knowing the course.
