Pre-race routine:

Last year the High cliff sprint was my first tri, and we really liked the park so the kids and I camped since Thursday before the race. Ate the typical camping food and played with the kids. Did some swimming and hiking and tried to relax- after all, this was a vacation with a HIM at the end. The high point was my 9 year old climbing the hill on his old, rusty tank of a bike. He kept saying if he could do it, any one could.
Event warmup:

Alarm at 0430, peanut better sandwitch and water. Drove down and set up trasition and talked to the donkeys. Met Tammy, Chris, Rob, Phil, Andy,Joe.... tried to relax before the start.
Swim
  • 41m 11s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim went fine until the third leg where I sighted the wrong bouy and thought the course was almost done. Only to find out there was anouther 4-500 yards before the turn to shore. This was depressing, but "oh well, just keep swimming".
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

T1 went fast, so fast that I forgot my garmin 305 in my bag.
What would you do differently?:

Take my time and double check things.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 56s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.27 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

T2 was fine, Grabbed the fuel belt and hat, changed shoes and took off running. While I was on the bike my daugher became a volunteer and was wearing a high cliff shirt and handing out water comming out of T2. It was nice to see her having fun.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing- T2 went fine
Run
  • 2h 56m 46s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

This was not a run. It was a suffer fest. Because of pushing it on the bike, I had no energy on the run and my knees hurt very bad. I walked the first hill, as planned, and began running once I reached the top. This turned into a run- walk- shuffle that went on for almost 3 hours. I was hoping to break 6.5 hours, but the legs would not work.
Ran down the final hill, grabbed the carrot from TriDDS and crossed the finish line upright (my original goal).
What would you do differently?:

I think I needed to take in more fluids on the bike and pace myself better. This was my first HIM., so I did not know what to expect. IT was much harded that I imagined it was going to be.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor nutrition while camping.
Injures and over training going into the race.
Need to train harder overall.

Event comments:

This was my one year anniversery doing tris. Even though I blew up on the run, looking back I see just how far I've come in this sport.
Thanks to the BT'er that sent me inspires over the last year, and Special thanks to TriDDS in helping to calm my nerves in the last week before this race. Much appreciated.

Course was good, with a few gripes.
1. Needed better milage markers on both the bike and run
2. Ran out of water at some run aid station
3. Food mostly gone for us BOPers

Having watched them set up since Friday, I have a new respect on what goes on behind the scenes to put on a HIM.
I'll be back next year.

Nice race. I can totally relate to doing the first one and figuring out what works and what doesn't. Strong mental effort. That will come in handy in the future. IMMOO here you come!

Way to go! And isn't it nice to have your kids participate and have your family be there for you?! Saw some kids on the trails - the little girl had her hand out to give me a HIGH FIVE!

Nice race donkey!  That's a long way for you to come from your first tri this time last year as a sprint to this bad boy race!  Nice job on finishing well!  I give you a lot of credit camping before a big race!  It's hard enough for me to sleep in my own bed the night before a race.  It's hard enough for me to sleep outside of my own bed while camping but to do both is very brave.  Great job sticking this out - it's only going to serve you that much more at IM MOO.

Focking stellar stuff man!!  Congrats on the getting the first one in the bag.  The long stuff is a whole new ball game and you become a nutrition dork sooner than you think.  I can remember lots of valleys on my first one with mini bonks.  Takes time to nail it down.  Way to go!

Way to persevere Donkey!  You gotta work on that nutrition, it is SOOOO important for endurance.  I've been getting into the habit of fueling every 15 minutes on the bike.  That makes it easy to remember.
