Pre-race routine:

Camped the night before.. but I sleptt in my car..long story- but it was fine actually. Woke up a little before 5. Had a Cliff bar and Mountain Dew. Got my bottles and stuff ready and rode down to transiton. I had mt sandals on and my friends were like "call us when you get down there" they know me well :)
I looked at the swim course the night before- to prepare myself. I did NOT even freak out, in fact- I thought it didnt look so bad. Last year High Cliff was my first race and I did the sprint and when I looked at the sprint swim course last year I freaked out and thought I couldnt do it. This year I look at 1.2 miles and think it looks fine. I have come a LONG way in my swim:)
Had a banana about 45 minutes before race too,
Event warmup:

Does the mile ride down hill to trasition count??
Swim
  • 43m 4s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well...Just started swimming.. never really had to fight much for space.. kind of sighted of the guy next to me until about halfway when he got a head of me. Really, never freaked out, never stopped, just went from bout to bouy...although not always the straightest route- probaly need to sight more often- I bet I went 100 extra yards because of my zig zagging. The right side of my goggles slowly filled up with water too, thought about emptying them but figured Id just keep going til I really couldnt stand it, I never did empty them.
I now know I should push myself harder.. I wasnt tired (which is good) at all, my arms werent at all fatigued... they should have been at least a little. But now I know I am comfortable with the ditance and I need to go a little faster, not for a liesurley Sunday swim :)
What would you do differently?:

Go harder, sight more often. Really am OK with this swim- I just wanted to get through it with nothing "dumb" happening.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Good transition. I couldnt believe all the people just moving at speed zero. What the heck- I know its a HIM but it IS a race!! Wetsuit came off nice- everything went pretty well. Didnt do the best job of getting clipped into my bike though.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Bike
  • 2h 58m
  • 56 miles
  • 18.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Not too bad of a bike split. Actaully was having a pretty fun time. Nothing at all exciting happened on the bike- no running over wildlife critters, no wiping out- nada. Oh- my bike computer was not working right- I was playing with it the day before and must have done something- because the first time I looked down at it- we were on a flat and it said 28 mph... damn- I dont think I am that fast!! Whne we got to the 10 mile mark it said 12 miles. Maybe it was trying to give me an ego boost :) Oh well. Started to want to be done about mile 45 or so. I had a GU, a Cliff bar a bottle of Gatorade, 2 bottles of water and a little perpetuem (that stuff was not going down well yesterday). I had to pee almost through tthe whole thing- I was just hoping it would go away. As soon as I did my first GU I was burping a lot and loud :) lasted through the whole run... I didnt feel bad- just burping ... kinda funny actually:)
What would you do differently?:

Now I know I could have pushed aliitle harder on the bike. I wanted to make sure I would be able to run- but I dont think the bike affected the run much.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Another good transition. I decided I didnt need socks- I mean how bad could it be.. I do sprints without them all the time :) Bad move- but hey I ahad a speedt T2!! Dumb me started running to the bike exit instead of the run exit- luckily my freind yelled at me to turn around. I am a goof.
What would you do differently?:

Take 10 seconds to put on socks and maybe go the right direction.
Run
  • 2h 07m 4s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

BLAH.... not thrilled with my run time- honestly never ever thought I would/could run that SLOW!!!
Met my friend Bob on the way out so we ran together- hes just training so didnt care all that much about his time. We train together sometimes so he knows my pace. My legs actually felt really good coming of the bike.. I was really happy with that. Started running up the hill and decided walking was less effort and just a s fast:) Did the first loop- felt good...Still had to pee though. We walked every aid station- it was HOT out. I drank water/ gatorade and dumped water on myself. Loved the ice station:) I am guessing we did the first loop at about a 8:40-8:50 pace. started the second loop- legs were getting tight, stomach hurt a little.. Im sure I started slowing down about mile 7ish. I walked for a liitle mile 8 or 9 and Bob says- come on- is this how you are going in?? No- Im coming- so I start again. About mile 10 he went ahead of me I couldnt keep our pace at all anymore. I was just out of energy.. I probaly should have been eating those yummy carmel Power Gels rather then putting them in my pocket :) I didnt walk anymore- except through the aid stations. My last 3 miles took 32 minutes :( But I made it:)
Oh- and from not wearing socks.. I have blisters on almost every toe and around my feet under my ankles!! Learned my lesson, although I dont think that contributed to my slowness.
What would you do differently?:

Try to take some gu at beginning and throught out the run. Maybe I should do a few more longer runs??
I dont know- running WAS always my strong point- but it just hasnt been that great for me lately.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, food (which I thought was kinda gross). Watched Bob get his 3rd place Clydes award. Waited for other friends to get in. Did not want to ride my bike back up that hill to my campsite- so I got a ride:) slacker.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first HIM.... kind of a learning experience. Id like to knock about 10 minutes of for Spirit of Racine :)

Event comments:

I really had fun and I think I am crazy but I cant wait to do another!!:)

Nice race!!!  What you consider “that slow” for your run is blazing fast for people like me.

Awesome race! wow! looks purty dang fast to me! And yeah, socks help. I warned a gal at the starting line about the same issue - if you haven't done it before for that distance, don't try something new today. But hey, I know.. the moment can get us loopy So next year, you'll knock off some time while sporting some kick azz sox!

Nice meeting you in transition. I guess the donkey gear does make us easy to spot : )

Greart race. Your run was awesome considering it was so darn hot out and you just just finished a 56 mile bike ride.  I would have taken a ride up the hill as well .

Great race. I think that heat (even in the shade) was getting to everybody on the run. Yeah I'm a big fan of socks on the run. Your swim sounds a lot like mine. Lots of zig-zagging.

Nice job Tammy!  Way to conquer that swim leg.  Now that you've got a HIM under your belt, learning to race one (rather than finishing) is the next step.....and then on to IM

Congrats!!

Hi Tammy,

I just read your HIM race report, very nice job interesting report as well as nice sub 6h for 1st HIM I have the same goal for my 1st HIM on 6/1/08
I was wondering how many hours weekly and the combination of s/b/r you used to prep for it? If you are willing to share few Tips it will help as well.

Thanks, Zvika
