I haven't done my first one yet - But, what keeps me motivated to train is the finish line - I just keep visualizing how good it will feel to accomplish the goal, and that keeps me going - Plus, I really enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle --

Having paid for and being registered for the NEXT Tri

I did my 1st Sprint Tri this past Sunday. I was already registered for my next one on July 15th. If I know I HAVE to be pepared for it, then I'll make myself go out and work for it.

After not doing much last week, I was ready to get back at it this week. So today I went on a 3 mile run - IN THE RAIN. If you would have told me 3 months ago that I would willingly leave my house, drive to a park with crushed granite trails (v. walk to the park closer to me that is a grass swamp at the moment), and take off running in the pouring rain ......I would have said you were crazy. But if I don't stay on top of the training, I risk losing what I've worked so hard to build.

That and the chocolate milk when I get home

I love to train. I love the structure and discipline that it takes. I like to train both long and slow as well as short and intense. I've met my best friends through triathlon, especially training. Basically, it's who I am.

Some days I have NO motivation!!! Some days I'm a go-getter!! The days when I have no motivation are the days when I find that after I have gone out and done something I feel MUCH better!  I use my running as a way to decompress and my swimming when I needed to think through something (usually I have a paper to write).

My hubby  (mcFuzz) is a great motivator!  He seems to be the energizer bunny.  He never stops!  I just finished my first tri and have my mext one in early August but I also have a few 5K's in July.

The thing that keeps me going back for more is the fact that at the finish line for my first tri my youngest 2 boys were there to run in with me and say that they were proud of me!!!  They always knew that Dad could do it but when Mom did it it was GREAT!!!

Lots of good reasons and any or all of them tend to work at different times:

-health reasons (family history of heart problems motivates you to stay healthy)
-staying in shape makes you feel great. It's a natural high.
-knowing you're out training while most people are being lazy
-the thrill of competition

Finally, just having it as part of a regular routine is a huge thing. If I break that routine I feel...wrong.

I think you've really asked two questions. I see the first one as "what motivates you to keep signing up for triathlon races?" and the second as "what motivates you to keep training in the three disciplines?"

I'll answer the second one first. What motivates me to keep training in the THREE disciplines? The races. Quite frankly, without the races, I probably wouldn't swim much at all. Not that I don't like to swim -- I really do. It's just that facilities and cost make it the least acessible. I'd definitely keep riding and running, though probably with a different emphasis and "neuroticism" toward a training "schedule" (and no, I don't really have a training schedule, but I do have distances/times that I use as benchmarks for race preparation).

Now to that first question. What motivates me to keep signing up for triathlon races? And that gets back to Jeepfleeb's insanity thing. I guess it's just my own breed of insanity that I have some sort of competetive athletic outlet. I always have, from jr high 'til now, and I don't see it ending any time soon.

I'm motivated to train for several reasons

- Fear of being half way through a race and worrying that I'm not fit enough to finish it. - I will always refuse to give up!
- Fear of being fat and flabby
- A way to meet new people, after relocating to a new area I've met lots of friends through the tri club

I'm motivated to race because
- It gives a reason to my training and a structure to my plan
- It gives me something to aim for i.e PB, Hardware (one day I hope) etc
- It gives me something to talk about it the office on monday morning and impress my colleagues (no matter how badly I may have done)

Triathlon gives me something other than work to focus on, helps make new friends, offers lots of opportunity for retail therapy and is a reason to be proud of myself. Also as my OH is in the army and is often away for long periods of time, triathlon distracts me from worrying about him which is a big help

Also I do it because I love swimming, biking and running!!

My wife and son! Plain and simple...I want to be on this earth as long as I can to enjoy everything I get to do with them. My doctor told me the biggest hurdle to good health is my weight. Doing just one of the three sports would bore me. Rotating through all three, keeps me focused, having fun, and losing weight.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Promises keep me motivated. I feel really dumb when I break a promise to myself.

  • My kids. I want to be around for them for as long as possible.
  • My wife. I want to be around with her for as long as possible.
  • Reminding myself that I'm only a few years younger than my father was when he died of a heart attack that was totally preventable.
  • The Introduce Yourself and Race Report forums.
  • Paying race registration fees.
  • Races are just plain fun. After you get to know some people, they're great social occassions.
  • The desire to continuously improve.
  • Vanity.

The pure competition is probably the single best motivator for me.  I LOVE racing, and pushing myself to it limits, and then setting new limits to achieve.  Also, this is one of my favorite quotes -

"When you are not out there training, someone is,  and when you race him, he will beat you!"

I stay motivated to silence the voices in my head that remind me of fatter, lazier times.  When I let up, the voices get louder.

Totally. I know how much better I feel exercising. Getting the routine is the hardest for me, so now that I've got the habit, I don't want to stop.

Haven't done a race yet, but so many of my friends are super impressed when they find out that I'm training for a sprint. And well.... what can I say? I like to impress people when I can.

I also like to eat but don't like stomach rolls.
