MinneMan Triathlon
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 28s
Overall Rank = 109/379
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 13/27
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at an ungodly hour (3:30am) to take care of last minute checklist stuff. Had to change back tire because noticed a bulge that skewed the tire. Cindy was a sweetheart and made me eggs, sausage and toast. 4 1/2 hours before the race, so figured I wouldn't have any digestion problems. Took about an hour to drive up to Oak Grove. Ran into Becki (teachertrek) in the parking lot. Saw Bryan (mndiver) and Steve (hikergerb) right away in the transition area. Helped Cindy set up in transition.
Event warmup:

Checked tire pressure. Rode bike up to parking lot and got floor pump out of van to top off pressure. Did a quick swim warmup (about 75 yds) with Cindy. Steve, Kelly (kelpeng) and Autumn (Autumn) were out warming up as well.
Swim
  • 11m 43s
  • 528 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out on the outside front. Went out relaxed and smooth as to avoid any freak-out issues. None (yipee!). Had some 'firsts' this year. Last year I was the one getting swum into. This year I probably swam up on 5 people. Not fast, but just fast enough to touch their heels, back off a bit and swim around them. Didn't notice any women from the next wave passing me this year, at least that I could see. Got fatigued after the return swim. Shouldn't have, let's just blame the 3:30 wake-up on 5 hours of sleep :).
What would you do differently?:

Actually...nothing. Was hoping that my swim time would be faster than 2:13s, especially with a wetsuit...but I'll take it. No complaints...and no freak-out issues this race...
Transition 1
  • 04m 9s
Comments:

Slower transition than last year because of wetsuit. I cut an inch off the bottom of my wetsuit for a quicker transition. I'll have to assess whether I need to go another.

Went sockless with my bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice wetsuit removal. Learn to get into shoes with shoes already in cleats.
Bike
  • 39m 23s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.81 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike leg surprised me. In my logs I've been lamenting about the fact that I only got 30 min of biking in the last 2 weeks. My bike volume has been PIT.TI.FUL. due to lots of focus on family activities. I went into this with a goal of trying to maintain a 20 mph average. Used my Garmin to keep track. Actually did O.K. Tried to hammer when I got below 20 mph and kicked back when I got above so I wouldn't die on the run. Two interesting notes: Saw Bryan early into the ride. He busted a spoke and his tire folded (sorry to hear about that, Bryan). Autumn passed me about 3/4 into the ride. Tried to stay with her, but she dropped me within a mile. She's a kick-butt rider. Averaged about 21+ mph.

Whole ride felt comfortable...must have been Mila's spin class...:)
What would you do differently?:

Hard to say on this one. I definitely felt like I could have gone faster on the bike leg, but in a way, I'm glad I didn't, because I had a GREAT run...
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Went sockless this year. I forgot my race belt, so I had safety pins in my race number. TOTALLY forgot to put my race number on. Ran out of the chute into the run leg, realized I forgot my race number, ran back towards transition, told the volunteers (with puppy dog eyes :)) that I forgot my race number. They waved me back and said it was O.K. Got lucky on this one...lost 11 secs on transition...:)
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my race belt.
Run
  • 23m 31s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I LOVE MY GARMIN. Knew my overall pace was about an 8:02/mile last year. Just kept checking my Garmin and making sure I was running sub 8s. Every so often I would glance down, and I'd be running a 9:15 pace. I'd pick it up, and soon I'd be running a 7:45 pace.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water and banana. Walked up to the van to get the camera, so I could snap a few of Cindy. Cheered in Steve and Emily (bikergrrl). Walked down the course looking for Cindy. She was predicting a 2 hour finish. Couldn't find her anywhere. Went back to the start and she was just running in at 1:45:34! Since she most likely won't write up a race report: Cindy's swim (3:07s), bike (14.7 mph avg), run (solid 10s). She had a great race. Gave her hugs at the finish and met up with the rest of the BT gang. Stayed for awards ceremony (Autumn/April - 2nd in her age group). Becki took 1st in her age group novice division (her 1st tri!) Went to ColdStone for ice cream with some of the BT gang - Autumn, Kelly, Kris (trigirlkris), Nora (norakramer) and Steve.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Holding back on the swim to maintain confidence. Holding back on the bike because of low bike volume, both of which were slightly unfounded. This was a great confidence building race.

Event comments:

I love Minneman. 13/27 in 40-44 age group. I'll take it. 10 places away from hardware! hah...

Possible chance that I may miss this race next year :( (son #2 going to scout camp, and I'm GOING WITH HIM!).

Good job, and it sounds that that Garmin is something I need to invest in. You guys had a wonderful morning for a triathlon.

What a great report.  I think the one thing that kept me from really feeling crappy about my race was seeing all the other B.T'ers so damn happy with the results.  It really did make me feel good. Congratulations to both you and Cindi on great performances.

Great Race even with your transition issue.  Interesting to monitor your paces so closely, sounds like something I would do if I had the toys.    You must have flown on mile 3 of the run.  Keep it up.

Great race Sal!  (and tell the same to Cindy).   It looks like the OWS practice has been paying off.  Hey, maybe "bike lots" isn't as conclusive of an answer as one is often told...

Great race, Sal & Cindy!  Sal, your run was awesome and when I passed you (me going the other direction, the slower direction), you looked totally relaxed & refreshed!  It was fun hanging out and I'm so glad Cindy wants to keep racing!  Get that 1.5 hour run in yesterday?

Great job Sal - and tell Cindy she did awesome too! Did you run yesterday? Sounds like you had a great race, it must be the Garmin...I'm pretty sure you tapped me on the swim, but I forgive you...at least you didn't go over me! I like falling over in T1, but I'm going to try giving that up next year...

Yeah, I've been conveying all the congrats to Cindy...OWS has been paying off, but not by leaps and bounds.  It'll come with time...

mswrites - 2007-07-01 7:10 AM You started at the front of your swim???

Well, not exactly.  It was a rectangular left handed swim.  Started out 2nd row on the far right (fairly small wave), so to me, that was considered the front!  Always had a lot of room.  Moved in closer to center once I knew I wasn't going to get swum over...uh...so...don't be too impressed...
