Age Group Rank = 4/17
Pre-race routine:

Had a bagel with PB and Honey at 5am, got to race at 6am got marked, set up transition, had a clif bar at 6:30 and then had just enough time to get my wetsuit on.
Event warmup:

Just a quick swim in the water, the 2k swim is my warm up!
Swim
  • 44m 52s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

I'm definitely not a swimmer - love it, just not good at it. I just started about a year ago so overall I'm happy with what I did. The second wave caught me half way through my first lap so there was never any "down" time.
What would you do differently?:

Need to swim more! Lots more! Should think about a coach for the winter.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Long run from beach to transition. Used the strippers but the suit was stuck on one heel, but got it off pretty quick. Everything else went smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Maybe more body glide??
Bike
  • 2h 53m 51s
  • 90 kms
  • 31.06 km/hr
Comments:

I was getting nervous about doing the "hardest course in Canada" in the days prior, but I really enjoyed it! Plan was to take it easy on the way out and if I felt good, push it on the way back. Excellent idea! Felt great at turn around and only the final push up Richter was really bad. Had to stop for a bee in my helmet though.

Nutrition was great, 2 bottles infint and a bottle of water from the aid station with 2 gels was great. Had 2 more gels and should've had another but took them on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Have another gel. Pretty happy with it though.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Grabbed my leftover gel and my run gel, put on shoes and race belt and was off.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to keep shoes on the bike.
Run
  • 1h 38m 47s
  • 21.4 kms
  • 04m 37s  min/km
Comments:

Flat and hot. Wasn't sure I was going to finish when I was at the 5k point. Legs were really tired from the bike and was feeling like I needed a boost. Had a gel and started to walk the aid stations. That made me feel better. I walked every aid station and had either water/G-ade and started feeling better - was very concsious as to what I needed. Had 1 more gel around the 12-13k mark. Everyone said I looked strong but it was definitely not an easy run (or fast for me either).
What would you do differently?:

Not sure right now, have to analyze a bit more. More running off hard bike rides maybe.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of stretching and drinking and had a GREAT post race massage!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutrition a bit and not training for such a tough course.

Event comments:

Awesome race and VERY glad I did it. I really had to push myself which is what I wanted. I've never felt like I wasn't sure if I was going to finish a race or not - but now I have. It was my first time doing a Half Iron and am really pleased with the result.

Great job dude!

Glad to hear you toughed out the run, and that run split would make me happy if I was running full speed
Awesome job!!!

Nice work VancityJ.
I heard the day was crazy hot, and on that course it could not have been easy. If you're thinking of getting a swim coach I would for sure recommend it. The other two sports are really about just getting out and doing them as much as you can. Swimming is so much about technique and efficiency, a coach in the water can make a difference that increased swim volume couldn't even touch. My swim is not great but I have noticed significant improvements having someone on deck every once in awhile.
Good job this weekend and good luck with the rest of your season.
Trevor.

Thanks for the comments guys! I am happy with the result considering I'm still really new to the sport.

twurtele - thanks for the comments and the recommendation for getting a coach. I'm pretty confident that I can get stronger on the bike and I know I can make my run stronger for sure, it's just the swimming that I'm unfamiliar with.
