Have any of you done the Devils Lake Tri? I have a friend that told me it was a really nice one. Any thoughts?

I heard that too. I figure since Pewaukee was hilly, I might as well do mostly hilly ones in the beginning and then when I finally do a flat one it will be easy.

Don't listen to them, the DL course is flat

I remember the HR monitor reading almost 200 and the speedo reading 4 MPH last year. Shallow swim (or walk for the tall guys). I swam up to a group walking, stood up and yelled "on your left" and resumed swimming past them.  Killer climbs with very fast downhills.

Nice spread post race, well run but I had issues with the open transitions. Transition was marked off with a row of flags. No fence or any security. I was worried about things walking, but nothing happened.

I, and about 5 other people from my laboratory, are doing this one this year!

I've been trying to get more hilly rides in as training....we'll see how it goes!

Lots of Hills. Tough going up, but 40+ mph going down! It's the weekend after the Ironman and typically the last race of the season, lots of participants and generally a good time. You should go! You can rest all winter...

Truly a tuff bike course, but really fun.

Probably capping the season off with it

Well, I am all signed up for this one. I am really looking forward to it, BUT this last weekend I was in a Jet Skiing accident and messed up my knee a little. I was just getting in to doing my final build-up for the next 5 weeks before taking the last week easier, but this is going to take me out of commision. I am hopeing that it heals quickly.

What does this mean? IMWI is the week before. You are not really thinking about doing this a week after MOO are you?

I am about 95% sure that I am in this one, too. I figure if TriDDS can do this a week after some little race, I should be about ready to come back off the couch and give 'er a whirl... I am thinking that if I get into trouble on the swim, I can just stand up... and I hear the bike course is pretty flat (I'm not being misled, am I?) .... Can I draft behind TriDDS? And the run course, hey, I figure if I can make it through the bike, I can crawl the run...

Hey Donkey nation, I know that this has been brought up before, but I thought that I would ask again since this thread is a little slow. I was hoping that you guys could explain to me how one would become part of the nation and if newbies, such as myself, are able to be a part. I just get a kick out of your avatars and a number of you live close to me, DDS being most likely closer than any others.

I did it last year on a 1970's Schwinn 10 speed. I was completely out of gears, standing, and barely going anywhere up some of them hills, but I never got off and walked. If I can do it on that piece o' rusty steel, any self-respecting donkey can do it on a real bike.

Here's hoping it's not so frickin' cold for the swim this year.

Well, it is official I have taken the next big step. I had been planning on riding a friends road bike that I used in my first spring, but things change. I just recently, today, purchased a Tri-Bike from a fellow BT member. It is a Cervelo P2K. I hope to get it next week and am really looking forward to it's debut at Devil's Lake. I would really like to meet up with anyone that might be in the area Friday night. I am staying in Baraboo, or if that is not possible meeting after the race. Let me know where you are all staying if anyone is getting there the day before.

I finally got around to signing up yesterday, since I missed the registration cutoff for Portage. Grrr.

We're just going to drive up from Madison Saturday morning. But, if the weather is nice, we'll probably hang out for a while afterwards.

Don't be surprised when you spend no time in your aero bars during the race. It's pretty much all either up or down. (Well, I guess you can get aero going down, but you'll probably want a hand on the brake as there's also a lot of curves.)

Does anyone have any data on the amount of climbing at Devil's Challenge. I have been doing some hills, but I want to know how much we are looking at so I can try to find a route close to here with roughly the same amount.

Well, I'm not sure if this does it justice or not, but here's someone else's mapmyride version of it:

http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/wi/baraboo/390213

I know it's not totally accurate, because it ends with an amazing downhill back into the park, and that's not really shown. But, basically in the first three miles, you climb about 500 feet. That's the most brutal part of it, since you're just on the bike and have nothing in the way of momentum going. You've got the length of the parking lot before you start uphill. The beginning of it is gentle, but once you turn onto the main road, you hit the brutal part. The whole thing is rather hilly, but not as bad as that first one. (Of course, the thing to remember is that if you just make it to the top, the rest is easier. Not easy, but easier. )

For some reason the elevation part won't show up on my computer. (Damn Vista). I am going to ride the beginning of it the day before. I am hoping to get there by 11:00 the day before, so I am going to very easily ride the first part to see what I am looking at an then I will probably drive the rest.
