Total Time = 6h 00m 25s
Overall Rank = 876/1256
Age Group = Men 34-39
Age Group Rank = 143/173
Pre-race routine:

Slept pretty good. Normally keyed up and get up quick. Actually wanted to keep sleeping. Hotel within walking distance so we started out on foot. Got picked up by one of the shuttles - driver didn't charge us - I think she just wanted to company. There was a mother and daughter on as well. Daughter was a pro the mother was a veteran Iron Woman.
Event warmup:

Got set up pretty quick. Loved the numbered racks. No jockeying for position. What was it with the chips? If you open transition at 5:00. Hand out the chips at 5:00. Somebody needs to talk to HFP about the pre-race music. I actually liked the walk out to the start. Got me really loose. Hit the water along the way as well. This was the best I have ever felt before a race (setting up the irony here). Oh and I can't forget the picture that jschmitchicago and I got with our adopted junior race supporter provided by Schmize and Mrs Schmize.
Swim
  • 43m 20s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

TIme includes wetsuit de-robing in the water.Bad idea. Big calf cramp. And lately even in training I have been really sucking at getting the damn thing off. Its like I need to be freakin Houdini or something. Overall I really had a good swim. I know my time is nothing special but I am swimming more relaxed and within myself and its taken me two solid years to have any kind of confidence in the water. All I'm thinking is I don't want to tax myself - I just want a good, solid, consistent swim to get me off and running (again the irony in that statement). My favorite part of the swim was for the first time ever I peaked behind me and there were two guys drafting me. And they stayed on for at least 400 meters. Only real trouble i had was rounding the last buoy and was, um, violated. Once by a dude and then really taken advantage of by a chick. Seriously I thought I should sit up and have a smoke or something.
What would you do differently?:

Take the wetsuit off on the run up the beach.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

Took more time than needed. Not sure why. I think I was relishing a little bit in my swim.
Bike
  • 2h 54m 3s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

As I learned later my nutrition was far, far from optimal. I also found that I wasn't in good enough condition to keep that speed over that distance. I was good until 44. I kinda blew up in the last 12 miles. Had a hard time keeping my average and got passed a lot. Other notes: had a bit of brake rubbing and my chain came off - had to attend to both. Oh and what was with all the peletons out there. Lots of trains and drafting going on. And what happened to "on your left." Boy I remember back in the day when riders respected each other and we rode to school up hill both ways.
What would you do differently?:

More miles in the saddle. And a new saddle. Um, ouchy. That's all I'll say to keep this PG.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Really wasn't myself in transition. Found my rack but freaked out about the run out and no one said anything despite my questioning aloud.
What would you do differently?:

Know where the run out is. I'll get to all the other bad later.
Run
  • 2h 17m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

Not being able to locate the run out should have been my first clue. I was in trouble from the first step. You know what? I don't want to get into it. It was really long and hard and my nutrition was off and at one point I couldn't even walk another step and just squatted down by the curb. Ran/walked the whole thing and walked straight through from 9-11.5. I did have an oasis moment from 6-7 where I felt really good. Like all the pain went away. I actually ran that mile in 7:30 but crashed even harder soon thereafter. Big, big thanks to jmcelroy who let me latch on for the last little bit of my run. Thanks Josh.
What would you do differently?:

Um, I don't know, not wear black socks.
Post race
Warm down:

Refuse help from the medic. Still refuse help from the medic. Again, refuse help from the medic and then get me a cookie or two.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nutritional ignorance. I will admit here publicly, jschmitchicago you are correct and I need to take pay closer attention to my nutrition and listen when my wife gives me advice. I am not crash proof. I vow to become a student of my nutrition.

Event comments:

Awesome volunteers. I wish there was a better way to thank them other than in passing. Seriously they help us and pick up after us and its just because they want to be out there. Very cool. And props to all the other BTers. Suffering is much more fun in the company of friends.

Yep, yep, yep. It's like I wrote your report myself. All too familiar. Way to gut it out through the run and finish in a still respectable time. Now just take what you learned and apply it to the next race. Great job and congrats on a stellar effort!

Good Race! you were the one BT that I saw during the race. I shouted your numbers and your screen name. You smiled so I thought you were having fun...... I too had a nasty calf cramp when I took my wetsuit off in the water. Great lessons that I too am working on!

Funny, for as long as I had to wander transition before the race, I didn't know where the run out was either!  I just stood at the aisle, waiting for someone else to go so I could follow them.  Felt like I was doing everything in slow motion anyway... my brain had checked out about 2 hours previous, and my body was just lazing around, waiting for the boss to get back.

Despite your issues, you still pulled in a 6 hour HIM.  Nice job - way to suck it up and pull it in.  You must walk like a bat out of hell if you walked most of the 13.1 miles and still had a better than 10:30 m/m pace.  (do bats walk out of hell??  just wondering... that might be a bad analogy....)

You'll have no trouble turning in an awesome race in PP!  You're ready for it!

Every race, good or bad, we learn something.  I kind of wish you had accepted the medical attention cuz me and my Jen were already in there.  You'd have had company, bro.

Thanks for the company after the race.  Sorry I missed Jen coming in.

Next year you guys come out and we ride Bull Valley-to-WI on weekends.  Get us all in proper bike shape!

Good to see you again!

It was a tough day all around it seems.  My read is that it was probably nutrition that contributed the most.  You're a strong runner ( from what I know ).

Get your nutrition plan locked down, and you'll start crushing the field.

Perhaps your "encounters" on the swim lodged the wetsuit in place and made it difficult to remove?

What?  you wore black socks???  Oh, man.  That explains it.

Seriously, though, I know its nutrition.  I just wrote something similar in your inspire about the conversation we had at HL's after the OWS at CL.  I think for Oly/sprints you are OK, but when you start going over 2 to 3 hours, well, listen to Jen.  She knows.

I got dehydraded at my Verona Oly this year, and it was the best thing that happened to me.  I ended up going to the bathroom a ton more on my long training missions (and at the race), but I will tell you being over hydrated and fueled is so much better than the alternative.  I think this race is going to be the turning point for you.  Really.

Dang, didn't you know us wives are ALWAYS right?  If you don't believe me, ask MarkK

Seriously, nutrition and blowing up on the bike seem to be the two themes of the race.  You are not alone, my friend.  EXCELLENT way to hang in there, and it sure was great to see you at dinner and post-race.  (I think I saw ya post-race...I was a little delirious.

See you at PP!
