Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 5 am. Made coffee, had a couple of frozen waffles and check the weather - it was already raining and not looking good. Left Delano for the tour start at 5:45
Event warmup:

Checked in, talked with a few poeple. Met up with Joe, Dana, Randel, Emily Bob, and Bridget
Bike
  • 4h 07m 24s
  • 65.91 miles
  • 15.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I had some hamstring cramps late in the ride. I was a little tight after the hill intervals on Wed. The Gatorade Endurance seemed to help for a while so it may have also been nutional.

This ride was wet almost from the get go. I ended up with my long sleeve wicking shirt on under the jersey and no rain coat. It was going to have to pour and get really cold before I donned the raincoat (I don't like the raining on the inside feeling.

The last 15 miles or so were in a pretty constant rain. The temperature had also fallen all day so it was starting to feel cold. My hamstring cramps started to come back also.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more sports drink sooner

Stretch more
Post race
Warm down:

Get into dry cloths, get a little food and then head for home and warm shower

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I could have ridden faster earlier but given the soreness I had at the end (knees and hammies) I'm not sure how much faster Iwould have done the whole ride - I just would have hurt more.

Event comments:

The only downer to this ride was the weather which they can't control. I defintely will keep this one on the plan for next year.

Sorry about the weather and your tight hams...those can couple for a not so great experience, but it sounds like you had a good ride! I'm interested to hear more.

Thanks for the report. I live in Excelsior, but chose to do the Prior Lake Sprint today (got wet there, too). I'll try to schedule it next year so I can take part in the Tour de Tonka.

Sounds like a good ride. We got rained on at Prior Lake too. I'll keep this one in mind for next year.

Did you guys get back to the DEC before the real downpour?   We were RIGHT behind you until Bob's second flat at mile 61.  The last four miles were pure torture, which is why I was so pissy when we arrived.  But with some perspective I am glad I did it and and really glad to know I can do it.  I hope you enjoyed the event overall.  See you next year?

Nice job in some really difficult circumstances.  Way to go working on that "badder"attitude!

Nice job Steve! I was thinking of all of you on Saturday and wondering how it was going with that crappy weather. Glad to see it wasn't a complete washout.

Great ride under some tough conditions!!! Nice job.

Do you take any kind of electrolyte tablet? Maybe the cramping was from not replacing your electrolytes lost in sweat? I know about 45+ miles into my century last year, I had to eat lots of salty potato chips b/c I was starting to feel like crap.

Bummer on the rain and cramps...I thought about all the people racing this weekend, and didn't feel so bad that I had to stay indoors, pull carpet and do home repairs...

Surprised you didn't have a flat with all the rain, though.  Good ride!
