Pre-race routine:

Ate two waffles and a banana with PB. Got in the car for an hour drive to the course. Drank some coffee and tried to stay relaxed.
Event warmup:

I did a little jogging, but not much else.
Swim
  • 30m 27s
  • 1609 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I don't have enough time to focus on swimming as this is the event that I feel the most confident with given that I have very little time in the pool, so with that said I was very pleased with my time.
What would you do differently?:

Get more time in the pool, once a week would be an improvement.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

I really tried to go faster in transition and I did make about a minute and a half improvement over my Danskin T1, but it still seems like I am pretty slow comparitively.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, maybe I should cut out gloves or something to help my time.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 34s
  • 25 miles
  • 16.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I was feeling GREAT for the first five miles of the bike and my avg speed was about 19.5, then I had a flat and lost over ten minutes trying to change it myself, failing and then finally having the sag wagon come by to help me. By that point, I was so discouraged and frustrated and really thought that it might be the end of my race because I couldn't change the tire (I tried, but couldn't get the tire off).
What would you do differently?:

Not get a flat or at least learn how to change one.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

This was a better time for me, but still could work on speeding up
Run
  • 1h 00m 24s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall I felt great on the run, I think I could have even pushed it a bit harder, but I was trying to watch my HR and not let it get too high.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Doug, got something to drink and then hung out with the BT group. I had a great time meeting some new folks and putting faces with screen names. It is nice to know people at the event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I was really pleased with my race, but wished I could have avoided the flat. It was mentally draining as I really was frustrated by not being able to change it on my own. At the end of the race I felt like I had plenty of gas in the tank and feel much more confident about the half

Event comments:

I enjoyed the race and especially liked Tom's sense of humor as RD.

KenD - 2007-09-17 8:30 AM Bummer about the flat. Great race besides that. Nice meeting you face to face. What's next on the schedule?

Next up is the Longhorn HIM, but before that I need to get in some good hard training and figure out how to change a flat tire.

Ouch!  You're bringing me back to some bad memories at Disco where I flatted too!  Very frustrating, so kudos for finishing strong.  You looked really great at the finish!

Congrats!

Great job,,    flats just suck,, you just need to channel all that frustration at the tire and rip it off..

OK yea... even with a flat tire, you still beat my Oly time by like 20 minutes or so! GREAT RACE JILL!

Fast swim! And your bike average is great considering the time spent on the flat. Very fast run too!

Congratulations!

HONEST! I DIDN'T SABOTAGE YOUR BIKE!  I was so bummed when you told me and was hoping for the rest of my ride until I saw you again that it was only a one time event.  You recovered very well.  Yeah, I fear your bike times, you're close to catching me.  Once we get those aerobars on, I'll be drafting off of you.  Great run, too.  Your speed is improving dramatically.

Shall we swim a bit this weekend?

Great race!  Good seeing you out there on the run course.  You commented on your gloves in T1.  With taped bars, I have found the gloves unnecessary, if that helps.  Bummer about that flat.  That was my greatest fear on that rough road.  And your swim time was still far better than mine, so I think you are well on your way to a successful HIM.

Looks like you are on your way to a great race at Longhorn. Sounds like someone has a guilty conscious about your flat tire. Maybe Doug should sleep in the garage and your bike gets the bed before the next race.

Nice job, Jill! Hopefully that will be your only flat and now you are done. I too need to learn to change a flat...I did it about 16 years ago on a mountain bike trip on the slickrock near Moab, Utah. It took me forever. After that I vowed to learn how to do it right and I still haven't. That was really about 1992

You are so very ready for your HIM. You will do great.
