Champion 7163 Verona WI--Ironman Bike Country! | Subject: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... Does any do tris or other events just for the fun of it? not so wrapped up in finishing time? being better than the year before? first in your AG? A bunch of us were talking about this last night and some felt they lost the fun because they were so damn focused on being better than/faster than...I confess I have fallen into that trap in running. It is one of the reasons I am looking at adding tris. I did my first duathlon this year and had a blast depsite being passed by many people on the bike (but it did bug me a little, see what I mean!). I would like to keep fun, but still be competent. Is that possible? I know some will say that the pressure is fun for them and I do get that. How do you keep it all in perspective? |

Expert 851 Oceanside, CA | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... Well, I don't know if I'm qualified to answer this or not since I have yet to do a tri, but the whole reason I want to do one is because everyone always looks like they're having so much fun. I've never been a very competitive person when it comes to sports, but I sure do like to have fun. |

Champion 6993 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... every race I do for the fun of it and to finish. I do not really ever waste time but I may not push myself too hard. I would just like to get into more mop though because I am sick of being all alone in smaller races. I have no desire to get to the FOP though. |

Veteran 130 | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... well....I guess it depends on what each person's idea/opinion of fun is. Personally I go out there to prove to myself what my body can do, push my limits, and have a good time while im at it. I personally dont care about what my finishing times are or how many ppl pass me, only that I put everything i have into it. Thats fun for me |

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I definitely do tri's (and train for them) because I enjoy it -- if I didn't, I wouldn't do it. But I also do try to better my times over last season. YOu know, get faster. I know that the time will come when the number on my life's chronometer is going to catch up with me, and "hoe to get faster" is going to become "how not to slow down so much"... And I hope when that time comes, I'll be able to mentally deal with that fact, and keep the genuinely "fun" part of the sport in mind. Here's a tale I was told by the wife of a very accomplished karate master. He had a couple black belts in his closet -- one he used every day, that was old and worn and faded, and one that he'd won in a tournament, that was still new and almost unused. Well, one day when she was in a particularly aggressively cleaning mood, she threw out the old ratty one... When he found out, he didn't scream and yell, but he hung his head in disappointment. YOu see, the idea is that when the karate master uses that black belt every day, it fades and gets worn, eventually becoming white... And that symbolizes the master coming full circle. I hope that I can always have at least some of that "newbie" wonder and joy of movement. |

Expert 1330 Arizona | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I do them strictly for the fun. The only person I compete against is myself. Do I push during races? Yes. Will I ever be a podium finisher? Probably not. Do I care? Nope. -Jot |

Expert 663 Williamsburg, VA | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I also do the tris just to finish. I will probably never be the one getting an AG win, unless its because I'm old and the only one. But it does give you a serious boost to the self confidence if you beat the last tri time. |

Extreme Veteran 461 Minnesota | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... Trying to get faster is fun for me. I will get a place at sometime at some event. I've been < this close > at every event I have done this year. At one event I was only 2 dang seconds behind the third place AG finisher. I know that I could've made those 2 seconds. So the fun of it is learning from each event what I need to do in my training to be better and how to perform better on race day. |

So, I have to keep it fun, or I'll get so depressed I'll stop racing. i keep racing against myself or my previous time - that way i'll have a fighting chance and only have myself to blame if i'm not happy with my performance. also triathlons have sort of permiated into my family circle, so having people to share it all with makes it fun - i recommend finding friends or family who'll be able to enjoy the sport with you. |

Champion 9430 No excuses! | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I train to race and race to compete. I enjoy training a lot though. It is fun to see what you can push yourself to do. But to answer part of your question I have done races just for fun before and still do. I have a almost 2 year old and I push him in his jogging stroller in races alot. Although we are always out to be first in the stroller division ( which doesn't exist) we do have a lot of fun with it. I have also run Boston for fun once because I was qualified and training went to crap but still wanted to go. I brought my cell phone with and had all my friends call me during the race, it was a blast!! |

I just finished my third season. I'd better be doing this for fun 'cuz I sure don't seem to be in it for the glory! But?!? I had so much fun this year! My best moment was my last race this past September. I made the race cut off by 11 minutes and that finishers medal is the sweetest piece of jewelry I own. This year, my competency in all three sports improved so much! And, I learned I still have so much to learn! I've come to tri late (mid-40's) so who knows. But, I do look forward to still ponying up those race fees well into my 70's! Next year, I'll work/race to beat my times from this years races. I'll be happy with small improvements. Check out KathyG's blog, she's phenomenal at discoursing on race/training perspective. With 5 kids, I guess you can get philosophic. Peeked at your logs - can't wait to see you and Betsy run at Boston together. I'd go home to watch that race. Keep having fun! And I like your swimming mantra! |

Pro 4612 MA | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I do tri for the fun of it - to hang out with BTers pre and post race. Next year will be my 4th season. I have made a point to train JUST ENOUGH to finish the races, don't care if I beat my old time, and have no goal. The main purpose for me to do triathlons is to keep me healthy. I figure swimming/biking/running a few times a week is already keeping me healthy. Racing is to give me something to look forward to. Improving my time is not going affect anyone in any way, but only adding to my own mental burden. So I am not going to think about it. |

Pro 4292 Evanston, | Subject: RE: Doing tri's purely for the fun it.... I like foolproof's perspective. I do it just for fun... but it's fun to see what I can do! Personally, the fact that I have absolutely no "natural" athletic ability also helps a lot. There's no pressure to actually be GOOD at this stuff. Then again... NEVER rule out the possibility of an AG win! (See my other thread today...) |
