I'm considering Memphis in May or Gulf Coast next spring. More than likely, it'll be MIM since I'm training for a marathon in March and I need to see how well I ramp up my swimming.

Ideally, I'd like to do a HIM in the fall. Right now, Steelhead 70.3 has caught my eye since it's on my birthday next year. What a great way to turn 29 .

Any other recommendations on a fall Half IM? Or have you done Steelhead and would you recommend it for a first timer?

I did the Steelhead as my first HIM last this past fall. It's a great venue and well run. It is a little crowded, but from the sounds of things they are all getting that way.

Good luck

I'm planning on Gulf Coast and Steelhead as well.  If you want to consiter a late September HIM, I did the South Carolina HIM as my first this year and it was a really good race!

I also did Steelhead as my first HIM (and only), and I LOVED it! I plan on doing it again in 2009.

Hadn't thought about South Carolina. Need to look at the hill profile on that one, since hills are where my problems lie. But living in GA should remedy that

Pigman is one of my favorites. Not a huge race, but very well supported. Lots of hills, though. I never knew Iowa was so hilly! Plus, they have a great t-shirt!

Why not go to racine for Spirit of Racine. Its just on the other side of the lake as Steelhead. I think it was very well done and a very fun race.

Steelhead is a great race. I did it this year and outside of maybe a little crowded streets at times on the bike a fantastic venue. Beautiful, swimming in Lake Michigan and rolling roads for the bike. Very well aided, overall a great race.

I would have to say that Musselman in Geneva, NY is one of the best in the country. It is a triathlon fest as well as a BT fest. Jeff Henderson is the race director and does a fantastic job with the race. The city of Geneva actually closes the streets to to city off for the race, there are bands playing in the streets and the post race activities are awesome.

Awesome. I really want to do a race in the spring, but with marathon training, I don't know if I can jump from a sprint to a half. If I wait til the fall, I'll have a full 9 months.

Thanks for the recs!

Sounds like Gulf coast is out for you, but put it on the schedule for '09. It's a great race with a festival type atmosphere all weekend. Good expo, pre race dinner, breakfast, post race party with video and awards, etc. 9it's all included in the race fee. It's a lot of fun and there are a lot of cheap places to stay close to the race right on the beach.

For '08, I might be doing the SC half in Greenwood. Nice town and I have heard nothing but good things about the race. I used to race with Set up, Inc. (the prduction company) and they put on a good race no matter where it is.

Sarah if you want to stay local you can do SC HIM in Greenwood, SC (Sept 28?), Atomic Man in Vonore, TN or Duke Liver Half in Raleigh, NC (both are about 2 weeks before SC).

If you want a destination HIM and can commit quickly, consider Timberman 70.3 in NH August 15-17.  I hear that is spectacular.

I participated in Mooseman this year as my one and only 1/2 to date. I would follow Keith to any of his events. Timberman is one of his events, and if it were not for it being on my daughters birthday this year, I would have gone to it instead of Mooseman. Mind you hills are on the route

Man, there are some good options. I am definitely on board with Gulf Coast in '09. As far as next year, Atomic Man was an option since my parents live right there. Easy and a free place to stay. I'm seriously considering Steelhead just because, man, what a great way to spend my birthday!!

Hmm, off to check out Timberman!
