Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree on the HK - probably slightly more $$ than the S&W (not sure on the Steyr - I know their stuff can be pretty pricey). I have an AUG, and have never been thrilled w/its reliability, but have neard nothing but good things on the HKs (a buddy of mine is a Mich. state cop and carries a .40SW USP as his sidearm, he loves it). Use will probably play a factor - is this competition, protection, CCW...? |

I really like my Dad's S&W 40. Very nice action. Out of the box the trigger is a little light to my taste but that can always be adjusted. I have been looking at a couple of Springfield Armoury and the Ruger 40 Auto. Definately not in the same price range as the H&K USP... but you are looking at the cream of the crop. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sharkie - 2008-05-20 1:12 PM Ok.. First off I was just suprise that John would buy a gun.. Not sure why I was suprised.. I just was.. John and I have chatted here in CoJ over the last few years and I feel like I kind of know him but I don't know him in real life.. I was asking.. Not as a way to flame him or other gun owners (to each their own) but because I was just suprised by his decision. Things happen in my type of employment in which certain potentially dangerous individuals make at least what might be perceived as credible threats against the safety of myself and my family. Because of this my wife has asked me to purchase two sidearms, one for me and one for her. (This also explains the purchase of the large dog with specialized training for the home.) |

As a bit of practical advice....get a short barreled pump-action shotgun for your home (remington 870 or equv.) load it with 3" number 4 shot turkey loads. Practice with it a good bit. You can't go wrong with any of your chioces for handguns (why not a Glock?) I am partial to the H&K's though.

Sensei![]() | ![]() H & K puts together a nice piece. Of your choices, I would go that way. I tend to like Glock, though. Fits my hand better (full size). |

Science Nerd![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Do you have a range that has guns you can rent? We've been able to shoot the different options we were considering and could tell which ones we like and which ones we didn't. My husband was a big fan of the Springfield Armory XD 45. I had a hard time with the grip on that one, so I wanted something smaller (a beretta, but I can't remember the model name). |

Shotgun is a very good option for home protection... the pellets normally don't go through walls if you miss. It takes a while to stop a bullet... and you have a high probability of said bullet going through walls and possibly all the way into your neighbors house depending on the proximity. I have large hands as well... I can palm a basket ball. I have no problems with the S&W holding nor shooting. I have had no problems the H&Ks that I have held but never fired them. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you're looking at HKs, have you considered a Sig Sauer? I think the P225 and P226 come in a variety of calibers (my father has a few SSs in .40SW .45ACP & 9mm). Right up there quality wise w/HK imho. |

I don't remember the model name but my grandfather had a berreta .22 cal that the barrel was maybe 2.5 inches. Held 5 or so shells. Not the most accurate thing over 25yrds. He used it for CCW in PA for the longest time. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Our swat team carries that H&K in .45. They all rave about it. We simpletons in patrol carry the Berretta .45 cougar and it blows. I echo the Glock sentiments. I would also look at Kahr and Kimber. The Kimber 1911 models are really sweet and only a little more expensive than the H&K. Are you in love with .40 ??? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had bad experiences with S&W semi-autos. "Broke" two of them on the qualification range. The scary thing is, the Officer who had one of them before I did actually had to use it in the line of duty. I'm sure they've improved in the past ten years, but I'm still not sure I want to trust my life with one. I've heard lots of raves on H&K. Never had problems with Sig or Glock. |

Nope, not in love with .40 at all. My first thought was I wanted to avoid a 9mm. Our local LEO's are switching to .40 as are the Feds. (I think). So my natural thought went to a .40. I've also considered a .45, but for some reason (nothing concrete) I really didn't look into .45s. sizewise how is a 1911 going to compare to a full size model of the three .40's I listed? (I could go with the H&K SOCAM...just kiding |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As a rehabilitating gun collector and former IDPA/IPSC/3-Gun competitor...I've pretty much owned and shot every pistol out there in general circulation; Beretta, SIG Sauer, Glock, Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Steyr, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, etc. When I downsized my collection of probably 20-30 pistols, I kept only my 1911's and Glocks. I haven't looked back, or desired to own any other pistols since. I would take a serious look at the Glock models in .40 (22/23/27). They are simple to operate, reliable, accurate, incredibly durable and corrosion resistant. There's nothing wrong with any of the other brands mentioned above--HK's are first class, but their USP have big and blocky grips for me--its just that a Glock IMO makes a pistol to fit just about any individual's self-defense requirements without breaking the bank. I don't recall if its been mentioned, but get yourself some first class training. Then, practice with a purpose and regularly. Invest in a combat-type flashlight (i.e. Surefire, Gladius, etc.) and practice shooting while clutching the light in your preferred hold. A real self-defense shooting is likely to happen in low-light. And with the axiom of never shoot at anything you can't id, you'll need to learn to apply illumination on your target. If you're truly serious about self-defense, set aside the funds to take one of the self-defense classes (a la Gunsite). Shooting for fun is one thing, shooting under pressure or in low-light is another. Edit: The only "pressure" I've shot under is competition (and self-defense shooting courses)--which is/are admittedly even a poor substitute for the real thing. I've never "seen the elephant" and hope never to. Edited by guncollector 2008-05-20 6:34 PM |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well it is not on your list but I am a 1911 guy. A nice Colt or Springfield could be a consideration but it does depend on what you want/need it for. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well if it is Home Defense a 20Ga pump home defense gun with a mounted light is very hard to beat and a lot safer than a hand gun in the house but I am sure others may disagree. |
