Pre-race routine:

The race had a 6:30 start which is fantastic for Florida, but which means I had to be up ass early in order to pick up Susan and Amanda and then meet up with a couple of marathonfesters for our 30 mile ride to Deland. None of us had done early packet pick up, so we had to be there early for that. Plus Susan's husband scared us into thinking our original leave time would cut things too closely, so we moved things up a half hour. So, that means the alarm went off at 3:10!!!

I walked the dog before heading out to get the others for our trek to Deland. We were way, way early. Thanks Fred!!! They hadn't even gotten set up for packet pick up when we arrived. On the plus side, we got a fantastic parking spot and got to use clean porta potties :)

Since we were there so early we just hung out around the car and then others we knew began arriving at a much more reasonable hour, so we then just had a big social hour.
Event warmup:

None. It takes me 2-3 miles to warm up, so I probably should have run an easy couple of miles, but I was not in the mood. Plus my leg has issues and I didn't know how much mileage I had in it, so I decided to save it for the race.

Comments:

I knew going into this that I was not going to have a fast time. Last weekend I pulled an interesting muscle while doing the "frog" pose in yoga. It is rather hurty and I can't run like I would like.
So, the plan was just to go out and see how the leg felt and not do any more harm to it. The first mile was suckage because I was not warmed up and I had discomfort in the leg with every footfall. Surprisingly, going up the "hills" felt much better than going down. During the first mile, on the downhills I really felt like I had to be careful my leg would not give out on me. So, I couldn't open it up as I would normally. Once I was warmed up this feeling went away and I was able to run the downs a bit better.
While I felt better miles 2 and 3, my pace was pretty consistent throughout. Unfortunately, it was slower than my HM pace!
I noticed as I went along that I passed a lot of people, but that only a couple of guys passed me. I couldn't see too many women in front of me, but figured that there were many well ahead of me. I was wrong.
At about 200 m out I could see the finish line and hear the announcer. Too my surprise I heard him announce that the first woman was just about to finish. What?! I could see that there were 2 or 3 woman ahead of me and one of them was the overall woman. So, that meant i was the 3d or 4th woman (I was 4th)!!
Ha, ha, you have to love small races :)

What would you do differently?:

Not do the frog pose! I am a bit disappointed that I was injured for this race as I would have liked to see where I would place if I was running like a normal 5k pace. Still, this was fun.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, cold towel and a short cool down walk.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

See above. Stupid yoga :)

Event comments:

This was a fun little race. There was also a 10k. I knew lots of the runners and we had a great time. Especially afterward when we hit up a great little breakfast place and consumed calories fit for a HM race!
The awards were cow bells! As a bonus, the race pictures are free!! My finish photo looks like my shoulders are attached to my ears and that I am ready to punch somebody :)

Course: Deland is a rural town about 30 miles northeast of Orlando. It actually has "hills". The whole course was a nice and rolling through a nice little neighborhood. The race is very small and with the early start and small town there was no need to close any roads.

Wow, Fourth woman OA with an AG win and this is done on bum legs.  You are fast!!

Congratulations!

I don't think I could pry myself up at 3 AM for a 6:30 AM start--even in the Florida heat!

Great job, Ann Marie!  That's a great time considering you are injured!  Sounds like a fun race, despite the early arrival time .  Take care of your leg.

Way to go, especially with all the obstacles (leg, not warmed up, uber-early awake/arrival times).  You really sucked it up, Buttercup, and rocked that race!!

That is just too early. Sounds like when DH insisted on getting to one of his tris really early, ended up being the 5th racer there, and they weren't even letting people into the event area yet.  I was one grumpy, sleepy sherpa.  It was July and still dark when we got there (after a 45 min. drive), for crying out loud!!

You had a great time AND finished at the top WITH a bum leg???  Almost seems like too much awesomeness to fit in one race.

Congrats!

The goal is to get stronger while your swim, bike and run training schedule is relatively light and you can afford to hit the weights hard a couple times each week.
