So how does it work?  I've read posts where people allude to handing out bottles.  I assume these are store-bought bottled water and not bike bottles, right?  I assume most people will pour the bottle into their aerodrink or whatever hydration system they have as they roll through?  I currently only have standard water bottles in cages and am thinking this will be a major disadvantage when it's hydration time.

They may hand up store-bought bottles, either water or Gatorade, or filled bike water bottles.  Depends on the race.  Most store-bought bottles sit fine in standard cages.  In fact, I usually put whatever I want to start with on the bike in store-bought Gatorade edge bottles since I know I'm going to be tossing them.

So then you have to unscrew and not lose the cap to the bottles every time you take a drink?  No thank you.  Guess I should look into an easy fill setup like an aero bottle or something.

Not all store-bought water bottles are screw-top.  Some can easily be used one-handed.  You might want to find out what specifically will be offered at your race.

I've never seen any race that hands up bottles on the bike hand up something that doesn't have some kind of drinkable/squeezable cap.

You should be able to use it just like a bike bottle....

But the advantage of having a refillable aero bottle (or other refillable system) is that if you just want half a bottle or aren't QUITE out yet but won't make it to the next station you can squeeze as much or as little of the fluid into your aero bottle as you want.

I just did a HIM and they handed out bottles like this, not a screw top, worked great!

Yup I've always had these types of bottles handed out for both water and Gatorade. They are already opened (no plastic or anything to unscrew) and ready to go, and they fit in a standard bike bottle holder. No worries!

Didn't even think about squeeze water/gatorade bottles!  That's much better!

I'll have to email the race director to find out what will be available.

I will be using the pictured gatorade bottles (2) on my bike from the start. One will have gatorade, the other will have water. When empty, I will toss them and get new ones. These bounce around a little but are pretty useful, I really like the twisty opening part. Very easy to use.
