Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:20 so we could leave by 4 a.m. Got up ate two waffles, apple sauce, protein shake and coffee. Went to pick up my wife's relay team mates. They were cracking me up the whole way to Boulder. The swimmer of the group brought a big sign that read "will swim for beer" They were holding it out the window for all to read. We got up to boulder and were the 2nd car at the race. Got a great TZ spot right by swim and bike exits. The ladies put there transition spot in the wrond place by a bunch of guys. They proceeded to joke around with them and had them in stiches from laughing so hard. Set up my spot and walked around abit. Found stacie and chatted with her for a bit. Talked to some other friends I knew.
Event warmup:

Short run and swim.
Swim
  • 31m 14s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

I wanted to be a minute faster than last years time. I was 7 seconds slower. I think wearing the sleeveless didn't help. Oh well it was too warm. I also had to go around all the slower 50+ folks who were back stroking. I got some seaweed on my goggles from the start and couldn't get it off the whole race. The swim felt good, I guess I could have gone harder. The course was slightly different than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder and wear my full suit for boyancy.
Transition 1
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

This was a very fast T1. I beat last years time by 30 seconds. I had a good spot and the wetsuit came right off.

Bike
  • 1h 10m 22s
  • 26 miles
  • 22.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Started strong and passed quite a few people right away. Got to old stage and was glad I put on the 12-27. That helped get up the hill quicker. Down the back where I hit 55 mph and held a good aero position. There was no one on the road becaus I was in the second wave. Stayed strong downhill and then got behind a boat trailer on one road so I kind of drafted. I couldn't get around him so I just stayed there. Got to the rollers and stayed strong and high cadence. I beat lat years time by 4 minutes. That was one of my goals. Finished hard and got ready to run.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Good T2 6 seconds slower that last year but I was much farther away so I was happy.
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 41m 55s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out a bit too fast but wanted to catch aguy in front of me. Kept going and wanted to catch the next group of 4 and did. Saw bucky (PRO) and wished him good luck, he did the same. Stayed strong until about mile 3 and started to get a side cramp. So I slowed a bit. I passed many and had 4 pass me and repassed oneguy. I was 7 seconds faster than last year but wanted to be a minute faster. Didn't meet that goal. Good run though, I finished before it got hot!
What would you do differently?:

Drink less water on the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Got to the finish line and meet my wife and her relay partner. Drank water, gatorade and got the cold wet towel at the finish, it was like heaven. Missed my wife going out on the run. Grabbed a free beer and watched her come in with a PR of 46:42, that's 7:32 pace. Her relay team took second and got a cool trophy and goggles. THey would have been first but Ann Lantz, former world champ in oly Tris, pu together a team at the last minute and beat my wifes team by 29 MINUTES! Had a few more beers, ate lasagne and pretzles and watched the awards. Met my friend Dan and watched as another friend won the women's age group race and almost beat the Top pro Amanda Gillam-Lovato.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nothing

Event comments:

Fun race. There is great competion and great place to hang outwith friends and meet other Triathletes. This is my third time and I will try and do it every year. Also saw Ovetta and she saw me riding my bike through Tranision. She said she was going to give me a penalty for riding with out a helmet. LOL she was just kidding.
Last year my time was 2:29:18
This year I wanted to be at 2:25 and I was at 2:25:10. I am happy with that.

Great race all the way around! Let's see, you woke up at 3:20 Sun. morning and I went to bed around 3:30 Sun. morning. I was thinking about some of you guys who might be beating the rooster to the call as I was getting into bed! Sounds like you had fun too - I've gotta think a good laugh has to help any pre-race anxiety.

Awesome race, Mark. Congratulations on beating last year's time. I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet your wife, but these races are pretty crazy. Congrats to her and her team - what a great result.

Did you realize that we were right next to each other on the swim at the first turn and all the way down the back side?  You should have drafted me in and cut another 15 seconds!!
Then I should have tried to stay with you on the bike!

You had a really good race.  I really like trying to catch you and I keep thinking that since this is the year after your IM, I'll be faster in the year after my IM too!  (I hope)!

Nice race Mark! Great to see you up there and in good spirits after a smoking time. We should definitely get together for some runs/rides...maybe you can teach me the intracacies of boat-trailer drafting

Mark,

You are freakin' fast man! I can't believe. Pulling 6 min+ miles after the swim and bike. Wow! You are soo good man. And yes if I ever catch you riding your bike w/o a helmet it's lights out buddy!

It was great to hear you cheering me on when I started the run. You probably were on your fifth beer!

Thanks so much for sticking around for all of us late-comers. Great race and great run! You rock.
