Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() After being on BT for 6 months now, I am often inspired by the toughness of other Bt'ers. The greatest being Velasqu7's holy crap toughness road to his IM. Comet's RR on her IM was very inspirational for it's toughness. Not to mention the road rashes, nipple burns, and chaffing that also constitutes toughness. The toughest thing I have done tri related is minor.....simply running into that ocean and swimming like a maniac over people...felt like Titanic. But what else? What have you done that is tough? Now sometimes tough and stupid overlap, that's okay. |

The only other tough thing about me is tolerating (and sometimes enjoying) ice baths. southernaquagoddess - 2005-11-28 7:11 The toughest thing I have done tri related is minor.....simply running into that ocean and swimming like a maniac over people...felt like Titanic. |

Man, that's bad to the bone. If I tried that, more often than not it would be a crappy run, if you know what I mean. Got to get the juices flowing before I head out the door. Me, anything I've done that could be called "tough" could just as easily be called "stupid." |

![]() | ![]() Stay up late cleaning up and doing chores, wake up several times during the night to take care of kids, then still haul my *** out of bed at 3:50am to go to the gym and workout before work. The rest of it is all just pain and that goes away. |

Cycling Guru ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I was in Plebe Summer at the Naval Academy they had qualification days for each PT event. The swim was a 200 meter swim and if you broke a certain time you did not have to do an organized swim the entire year. Not ONE person that I know validated that swim (even the fish who was a Navy rescue swimmer and was the fastest guy on our race team). For the 1-1/2 mile run if you ran faster than 8:30 total time you validated the run portion for the year. Once I heard that I knew I had a shot. I went out as hard and as fast as I knew I could pace it and kept an eye on every lap time on the track. Did it in 8:27 (5:38 pace) so I would have validated the run (did not stay at the Academy, so it never became an issue). Hardest/toughest run I've ever done and is what I consider the "pinnacle" of my running career. Felt totally awesome that day. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I wiped out on my bike about 30 minutes into the start of ride. Lost the rear wheel ( it was a replacement tire, and pretty worn down ) and just slid out. Road rash on arm and leg, wrist not feeling quite right. Got back up, rode to the trusty LBS, bought a new tire, and finished my ride. Then I came home and peeled the shorts off the rash. Ouch. Like you said, sometimes stupidity and tough overlap. ![]() -C |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I generally consider myself a big pansy...I'm the worst about getting in a comfort zone and being too scared to push through it. I've missed so many workouts this past year simply because I didn't feel like it. I'm queen wimp. But, I have a couple of instances where I thought I was tough...well, more stupid than anything I guess... 1) Spring of 2002, I was in college and cycled for Texas Tech and continued running on my own and doing some fun runs, etc. Generally I was the only female who would race on the team, but I finally convinced my fellow female teammate to go do the Tunis race in College Station (for those who don't know about this race, it's pretty hilarious, it's on road bikes but half the roads are dirt, serious lose your wheels under the dirt; the other half are on extremely rough oil top roads...this race is almost more meant for mountain bikes, but it's definitely a race to do at least once in your life). The race was on a Saturday. The Austin marathon was the next day and I further convinced my teammate, who also ran some, but generally not more than 6 miles, to do the 2 man relay there. So, we started training, we registered for the events, and I made the hotel reservations. We were ready! Well, on the Tuesday before the big weekend we were on a training ride around campus and I was hit by a car. This person, a professor no less, was making a left turn and just didn't even hesitate to look for oncoming traffic and just plowed into me. Well, I caught some good air, according to the spectators and was bleeding quite a bit, but amazingly I did not break a single bone, just extremely bruised and cut up. My bike however, was a different story, the carbon fiber didn't take it so well and it was pretty much a mangled mess. My teammate was excited, thinking that we wouldn't be doing the races, she was so nervous about them. But I had already made the arrangements, we were going dang it! I managed to borrow a POS bike from someone for the race. So we went. My right foot was in pretty bad shape, guess I hit it on the car pretty hard as I flew through the air, I had to have someone help clip me in on that side because my foot hurt too bad to put that much pressure on it. The race sucked...I ended up having a flat and no wheel for the wheel truck, BUT I did fix my own flat and managed to finish. DFL is better than DNF and since so few girls race in college I still earned points for the team. The run the next day went better than expected. During my previous long runs my hip had started bothering me, but with my foot hurting so bad, I didn't notice the hip pain 2) When I bought my first bike, it was with the intention of doing triathlons. The guy who I bought it from was a triahtlete and was giving me all sorts of pointers and tips about triathlons. He mentioned how he didn't run in socks to save time in transition. Good idea I thought, so I decided I would start running without socks. This guy only does sprints and a few oly's so he had no idea of my longer distance goals. Well, I decided I wanted to do a marathon. I did the White Rock Marathon and I did the entire thing without socks. Mistake! I managed to peel off my bloody shoes and my dad was just like, "And this is FUN for you?!" Live and learn. Oh, also about my first marathon. Packet pick-up was on Saturday and the race on Sunday. Being the first weekend of December it was finals time. I had a final Saturday morning, took it, then drove straight to Dallas picked up the packet etc. I did the race on Sunday and then had to drive back to Lubbock that day because I had a final Monday morning. I practically had to fall out of the car to get out when I got home my legs were so tight. 3) Most recent stupidity I guess would be training for that 24 hr ride. I would work all day on Friday and then ride all night by myself for 14 hours or whatever since none of my friends were willing to help out. It really didn't seem bad at the time, but I think back now and am just like, How the heck did I do that?! Yet at the same time, I have the desire to do that stupid RAAM qualifier in the back of my mind. Everyone at work keeps telling me that I have a loose screw somewhere, but hey, I'm having fun! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Among the many things both tough and stupid I have done, 2 stick out. 1)I broke my wrist mountain biking on the climb up. I finished the climb and road down the bike back to the trailhead. Did a 3 hours hike. And, finally, drove myself 2 1/2 hours back to the MD's I work with to get it taken care. Ended up with pins and cast for 5 months . 2) Hiked over 50 miles in the Grand Canyon with blisters on the backs of both heels due to the use of crampons at the top. The blisters were larger than 50 cent pieces. Let's say the bandages were soak with blood in less than a 1/2 mile after each change. I would say this was the most painful experience in my short life. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() most of my tough stuff is not tri related. i just find tris to be punishing and fun, with much dedication thrown in there. i have tough/stupid stuff that absolutely should have won me a darwin award. think along the lines of free-ball dangling from a highway billboard with one hand while the other hand frantically tries to put the f**king carabiner into the descender because it FELL OUT. scary on levels you can't imagine unless you've stared death in the face and actually had to take action to prevent it. its one thing to survive by luck, its another thing to have endure pain and failing muscles while performing some MacGuyver-like task to save your own hide. and thats happened more than once by the way. thats what i get for buying about 50% of my climbing/roping gear in garage sales. <- stupid part |

Not so much the race itself, but the psycho-shite that went on during the run. Hey, at this point it's considered tough to read about ANY of Janelle's body parts....let's recap: Tree trunk legs (not my words here), hiney stared at, blistery feet, and a burrito the size of her head. This is meant as a joke and not to offend. Oh, and let's not forget the toughness of Melanie (colomingle) who volunteered to leave happy Colorado to nurse the stricken in New Orleans right after the hurricane? Tough. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The toughest thing I've done is simply completing the 1/2 Ironman distance but in my last race one of my training partners set the bar for toughness. At mile 36 of the bike he was cut off on the bike and crashed. Rear wheel folded, massive road rash and something wrong with his ribs ( he was complaining he couldn't get a breath of air ie very hard to breath). His bike was done but as luck would have it he crashed right near another training partner (watching only- this time) . Rules be dammed he swamped his TRI bike for a $150 Wal-Mart special mountain bike, swamped shoes and finished the last 20 miles on the funniest most ill-fitting bike I have ever seen. He had a mission beside just finishing the race. He then proceeded to run the 1/2 mary with a very crippled look about him and a very pained look on his face like every step shot pain down to his core. He normally passes me about 4 min. into the runs but today it took him to mile 12 to catch me. (A statement to just how slow a runner I really am). He finished the 1/2 Ironman 3 min. in front of me where he completed his other mission. He asked his girlfriend of several years to marry him. After she said yes and only then did he go to the med tent. Where they thought at 1st he had punctured a lung amongst other injuries, which gave him a 1st class ticket straight to the ER. Final result was road rash, 1 cracked rib, a 1/2 IM finish and a fiancée now that’s tough! Edited by jchyte 2005-11-28 1:07 PM |
