I read it three times in the "other" flat thread:

"Start at the valve and work away to the opposite side of the tire when seating the tire"

According to Michelin's own website:

5. To install the second bead, always start opposite the valve and position the bead in the rim bed. Make sure the bead is working into the drop center of the rim to ease mounting. Finish the tire mounting at the valve.

After five years of doing it the other way I have found that they are right, its easier to start opposite and work towards the valve.

Nice Do It Yourself Guide Here:

25 years of riding bikes and doing my own maint. I can honestly say I've never started removing a tire from the valve area.  It is the tightest area on the tire because of the mechanism usually!

I just pick a spot and go.  There is no real magic otherwise to where to start.  It's a circle after all!!

I think he's talking about installing rather than removing the tire.

Personally, I've had better luck, less effort, finishing away from the valve. YMMV, and I'm sure Michelin won't repossess your tire if you don't do it their way.

I've seen the same tip on the instruction sheet that came with a Continental tire. (I do sometimes read instruction sheets, usually after the job is done. ) I've since tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference.

Correct, but this was about putting a tire on.

Its the words like "install" and "finish mounting" that were the clues

It's not often I get to point something out to the BEAR....so I will take my chance.

If you start opposite the valve...you finish away from the valve too.  It's a CIRCLE.

I think the proper way is to work both sides at the same time.  So I start at the valve, working both sides in towards me, and end up on the opposite side.  Just me.

I find that if I try to finish at the valve I get the stupid tube stuck somehow.

Duh, that's what I get for not reading thouroughly.

For me, the valve goes in the hole, then tuck the tube into the rest of the tire.  I will usually start from the valve to seat the tire, but not always.

The only real thing to pay attention to is to push the valve back into the tire after you have seated around it so that the bead will get all the way in.

I've changed so many I don't even really pay attention anymore, it is like second nature.
