Age Group Rank = 10/26
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30, ate breakfast, then headed to the race. When I got there, I set up in the transition area, used the bathroom, then began the run and swim warmup. After the warmup, it started pouring so the race director delayed the start for an hour, but it did nothing
Event warmup:

8 min. easy run
200yd. swim
Swim
  • 05m 21s
  • 275 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was a really good swim for me. Usually I swim slower during races for some reason, but today I did what I set out to do. There was some traffic in the water, but isn't there always st indoor tris?
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all. I was really happy with my performance.
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Overall, it went pretty well. I found my bike, put on my helmet and shoes, then left. Everything was soaked, though, and it kind of sucked putting on my helmet :(.
What would you do differently?:

All was just as expected.
Bike
  • 32m 49s
  • 10.8 miles
  • 19.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Despite it raining, the wind blowing, and the course being soaked and slippery, I felt the bike was successful. I definitely was cautious going downhill and turning, so that slowed me down a little. I'm just glad I didn't crash.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing under my control. It would have been nice if the road was dry and it wasn't so windy, but I did my best considering the circumstances weren't ideal.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

As I pulled into transition, I immediately noticed that m shoes were filled to the brim with water. I dumped them out and put them on my already soaked and almost blistering feet. I thought for sure I would get blisters on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Once again, nothing under my control. i would have saved 10 or 15 seconds if my shoes were dry, but everything else was fine.
Run
  • 21m 3s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

This was the fastest, most exciting run I've done during a triathlon! I ran out of T2 a bit fast and determined not to let my extremely heavy shoes get the best of me. I took off and only slowed down when I had to run through a "river" flowing down a hill the I was running up.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I gave all my effort and got an awesome time. What else is there?
Post race
Warm down:

I took a short walk (over to the pancake table), put on a dry sweatshirt, then went home since there was no chance I had won an award with such a competitive age group.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The Rain!

Any race with pancakes is a good race. Try putting your shoes in plastic bags next time. They might get wet a minute into the run but at least putting on dry shoes is nice.

I was going to suggest the bags for the shoes, or, failing that, you could put them on the floor upside down so the soles are exposed to the elements instead.

Good job on a race in cruddy conditions! Really cool that you realized what some of the limiters were, but didn't let that beat you down.

Whoop whoop! Nice one. As always, your attitude in dealing with the things out of your control is awesome. How were those pancakes?

First, a reference I'm sure you won't get: Captain Ca-avemaaa-aaaaan!  (a cartoon in the late 70s/early 80s)

Second (but should be first): PANCAKES!!!

Next: that was one speedy bike a speedy run, nice job!  Hopefully next time rain and wet gear isn't a factor.  As others mentioned, putting a plastic bag (tall kitchen bag, like those white ones) over your shoes/helmet, or if possible arrange them in the bag but be sure you can still access them quickly (lay the bag on its side).

Great job, and it's neat to see you had so much competition in your AG!

Great race. Thanks for sharing the report. Very fast times. Here in NC, your age group actually has less people in some of the older groups. You'd have an excellent shot at placing here.
