Master 1790 | Subject: *new* Athena challenge for May We are Athenas. We love the sport. We may not be the fastest, but we are dedicated athletes. We not only battle wind and rain, but also our own inner demons of self-doubt. (Not to mention finding something to wear.) And now we have a place to challenge one another. Here you'll find an ear to listen who really understands the unique athena challenges. No one will be judged, and all athena women are welcome. Repeat: All levels are welcome. Here's how it works: Each month there will be a new thread. You will set your own weekly goal for your workouts each week. Note: This challenge is about exercise and not diet or weight, so goals should not be diet- or weight-related, although you certainly may post about weight loss along the way. Remember, all levels are welcome. No one will judge you if your goal is to walk for 15 minutes or ride for 5 miles. This is not a contest for who can bike the farthest or swim the fastest, but rather a way for us all to improve by effective goal setting and social support. By each Sunday, post how you did this week and your progress toward your goal. Don't worry if you couldn't quite make it -- that's what we're here for and there's always next week. Also in this weekly checkin post, set your goal for the next week. It can be the same or a new goal. I will track how you are progressing and everyone will offer valuable feedback and give tips. I will also create a chart you can add to your training log to keep track of the other athenas to offer inspires and other positive feedback. So sign up below and post your first goal! The challenge officially begins April 29, but is open to join at any time. Goals can be: 1. Frequency-based. I will swim twice this week, bike twice this week, and walk or run twice this week. 2. Time-based. I will swim at least 60 minutes this week, bike 90 hours this week, and walk or run 60 minutes this week. 3. Distance-based. I will swim 2,000 yards this week, bike 20 miles this week, and walk or run 5 miles this week. This is about *your* goal, so remember these are NOT minimums. You can make your goal whatever will work best for you. And if you are not currently training in all three sports, you still may join the challenge. We are Athenas. And we will win the race against ourselves. Edited by Offthegrid 2007-04-24 8:42 AM |

Master 1790 | Subject: goal: week of April 29-May 6 Swim twice, run three times and bike twice. This is going to be a tough week to fit in these workouts because I am in training all day at work Monday at a location 90 minutes from here, so I'm losing a day. I'll probably make that the rest day. |

Master 1641 Cambridge, MA | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May I'm in, baby. This'll be fun -- I've never done an All-Athena challenge. My goals will be in line with my training plan's key workouts. Let me sort those out for next week, then post again. I'm glad that this is a non-competitve, non-judgemental challenge...since I do enough of that within myself, I don't really need the external pressures, but it is NICE to know that other Athenas are on the road alongside me. More later, -Sunny |

Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May Sounds like fun! I can always use the extra motivation! The next couple weeks are going to be super hard to get any workouts in /c lots of family will be in town....much more sitting and eating than exercise! After that hopefully my shins will be up to running again and I also really need to start focusing on biking. I'm riding to school everday at least once or twice, but no actual training. I'll have to think about some good goals for myself. Thanks for starting this Offthegrid. |

Pro 4089 Without house | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May I'm in...will post my plans for the week in a few. But first, I wanted to post this...hunted down Welshy's 'Ode to Athena'...thought it might be appropriate... Your athletic curves fill me with longing As you pass me with no effort, while I'm bonking The pain in my calves momentarily forgotten Replaced by the distraction of a strong woman jogging
Some may like the small and petite Slender girls with little feet No curves, no jiggle, I won't keep My expectations they fail to meet
Broad and tall with athletic grace Burning and yearning to win the race A drive I share, and dare, to pace So patience, I ask, while I make my case
Strong and indomitable, I'll go as long as you like Though the water, while I swim, be full of strife Nothing easier than me on the bike And the run, I admit, leaves me breathing for life
So spare me one clear, frank glance You are the Athena I will romance Proud and tall, we might have a chance If you would only slow and join my dance |

Pro 4089 Without house | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May 4x swim, 3x bike, 3x run this week. Swim is my weakest by far (and considering I'm weak in all 3, that's saying something), so I like to work on that as much as possible (plus, I've found that a morning swim does wonders for my day) |

A little off topic but this reminded me of something and I'm not sure where else to ask it. Maybe you all can help. I badly need new bike shorts but I'm not sure I'm ready for the world to see me in spandex. (Heck i'm not sure I'm ready to see me in spandex!) Years ago my mom bought me some bike shorts that were regular bike shorts underneath but then had regular baggier shorts over them so they were a little less....revealing. Any thoughtso n where I could find something like that? Or any other ideas on bike shorts that might be good for me? I guess I could always just wear 2 pairs of shorts but that's a pain...and extra work come laundry day, which is never good! Thanks! |

Expert 839 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May lil turtle - I swear by Terry Bicycling shorts. They have a great selection of bigger sizes (all the way up to 4X, which I used to wear). They also make skorts with spandex shorts underneath and a little skirt over the top. Super cute! www.terrybicycles.com Goals for me for the week of 4/29 are: Recover from IM Camp as needed Swim 3X Bike 3X Run 3X Have fun at Sprint Tri on my 30th Birthday |

I'd love to link in with some of you other athenas! I'm coming off a back injury and a cold, so I'm not really sure, but this week I'll try to: Swim 3X Well. This seemed like a good goal, BUT during my ride last night I re-joined the 'fell-over-while-clipped-in' club and landed square on my knee. It hurts today so I'll try a little run and see how it feels - I may have to adjust my goals this week. |

Expert 1022 In limbo | Subject: RE: *new* Athena challenge for May Thanks for the bike shorts recommendations! Hopefully next week I'll have time to do some shopping! I'd love to buy online but I'm not sure I trust the fit since I've never bought myself bike shorts before. If it goes on much longer with me not having time though I'll just have to bite the bullet and go for it, because I really do need bike shorts and my free time is severely limited. Anyway, starting next monday, my weekly goals are going to be I'm still having trouble biking as a workout. I'm on my bike a lot going to and from class, but it's hard taking that next step! Hopefully the shorts will help! |
