Short of the "suck it up and go posts"....does anyone have a suggested path to get me to the start line at IMLou with the right balance between health and fitness?? I am dealing with a calf that is injured...not torn, but it had some serious adhesions in it after Muncie that I subsequently made worse by pushing through my planned 2 hour run the Thursday after.....ever since the thing has nagged and just won't go away.....had a camp planned on July 25-26 at which we ran the IMLou run course one time. I got that done but by the end of 13.1, I was feeling it pretty badly and was afraid it was going to really seize up at any moment.

I can ride without issue and did a nice rainy 140 miler this past weekend and plan on a 150 miler this coming weekend......but last night I tried a simple 18 x 2 brick and while I ran o.k., I could feel "that spot" in my calf and realized that I am not ready to fully return to my run training.....if I take another full week off from running I will be within 6 days of the planned beginning of my taper.....no way I can build back to my normal run base that quickly without re-injuring the calf.......

Thoughts??

Paul

Don't run.  Ride more if you can.  Getting to the line healthy is job #1, 2 & 3.

Option 1.  Run on it and gain very little run fitness in the next 3 weeks at the very possible risk of a DNS

Option 2.  Don't run on it and show up possibly a little undertrained

You could try accupunture or message therapy to speed the recovery.  I have never tried either, but folks swear by them.

All I can say is rest it and rehab it as best you can.  Six additional days of taper honestly won't cost you that much (if anything).  Then hope for the best.  I just did the full Vineman with a hamstring pull and it didn't affect the swim and bike, but the run was no fun...the hammie did lock up on me at 16+ miles, which made for a long walk.  Anything you can do to minimize the severity of the injury going in will be more helpful than trying to train on it, trust me.

i would find a good massage therapist.  i had some nagging issues in my calves earlier this year.  she worked out all the adhesion and i didn't miss a beat.

ART-Active Release therapy, I can't recommend it enough.

Have you tried running in calf sleeves? Check out the forums on Slowtwitch. A lot of people who have chronic calf problems have had good results using them at IM.

X2.  I have chronic calf issues.  I tore one in 2005, was in a walking boot the whole nine yards.  Since I've healed I've been having ART and Gratson done on them and it works wonders, gets out all the junk that has built up in it.  I've also used calf sleeves before.  Not sure if they do any good or if it is just more of a mental thing, but they seem to help.  I use the 2XU sleeves.

ART ART ART ART, I am a big fan it has done wonders for the injurys I have had leading up to IMMOO.  Now I go in every 3-4 weeks just to help stretch stuff out even if I am not in pain.

One other suggestion is Deep Water Running. Research has shown that you can maintain run fitness over a 6 wk period. You can totally replace your run workouts or just substitute DWR for one or two of them.

Good luck--

I'm with J.J. on this one if you "insist" on "run" training---there have been a few people on this board that have done a large chunk of their IM run training in the pool as aqua running/jogging.  On the other hand I see nothing wrong with just resting it and trying to get in more biking if possible/pain-free...as was said earlier getting to the start line is what it's ALL about!

Another vote for ART.

I have been fighting a very similar injury and my first ART treatment knocked it down by half and one follow up has just about solved it.

I can't recommend it enough!

I've had the same problem before IM Lou last year.  I nearly stopped running all together 3 weeks prior to the event for fear I could re-injure it at any time.  I was so frustrated because I had the strength, energy and motivation to run but simply could not run.  Swimming and biking were still fine.
I also recc you go to a knowledgeable shop that specializes in running shoes, where they can analyze your step and find the best shoe, or orthotic insert.  For 30 dollars I have orthotics bought right off the shelf that have eliminated this problem all together.
