April 7, 1933 - President Roosevelt fulfills a pre-election promise and signs the Cullen-Harrison bill modifying the Volstead Act to permit the sale of beer and thereby ending prohibition in the United States.

Sounds like a great reason to have a beer tonight!

It is hard for me to imagine a culture that would deny beer and alcohol sales, while still promoting itself as a beacon of liberty. We are a nation of paradoxes. I think our growing diversity and complexity is really good for our Republic.

It's a good day to be a patriot. Anyone wanna drink to that?

About 20 years ago, I was looking at houses for sale in Tampa. This one particular house had an odd setup/room at the back with a back entrance. Had small booths and a bar. I was told it used to serve as a neighborhood speak-easy. I wanted that house! (no, did not buy it)

I rented a house built circa 1860. There was this odd cabinet built into the chimney surround. Intentionally disguised with beadboard and when you touched it, you realized the wall was false. When I asked the owner, she told me "Oh, that's the preacher's cabinet". I guess you used to hide your stash when the preacher came-a-callin.

I was also going to ask if similar logic could be applied to currently illegal drugs?  Alcohol is just a drug after all.

I think the growth and consumption of marijuana should be legalized.

I read a little bit of the history of the criminalization of marijuana. Interesting. Turns out the Mexican immigrants were users and criminalizing marijuana gave the powers that be a convenient excuse to jail the Mexicans.

How about heroin, meth, cocaine, etc?

I think if Alcohol and/or cigarettes were invented in the last 100 years they would be totally illegal.  They have such a history it is hard to remove them from our culture.

Thank goodness for that!

I think if the Founding Fathers had foreseen a time when the prevailing mood of the country would be anti-alcohol, the right to bear alcohol and tobacco would probably be found in our Bill of Rights.

Heheh, where I did my undergrad, Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, was the central office for the Anti-Saloon league. The Westerville Library actually houses the Anti-Saloon League museum! Up until two years ago, you could not buy alcohol within Westerville City limits (if you went across the major road, you could buy it all in Kroger). Now you can buy up to 1 six pack of beer or one bottle of wine in three of the restaurants in town. The school itself is a totally dry campus, meaning no alcohol consumption of any kind, anywhere on campus (dorms, sorority/fraternity houses, functions involving OC organizations...nothing). I find it very ironic that the mansion of the founder of the Anti-Saloon League is now a fraternity house...and that specific fraternity has received multiple alcohol citations.

prohibition made Franklin County , where I like, a much more prosperous place.

FDR brought the 'lectricity.

Around here, we are for good lighting (on Sunday) and a little drink of liquor on friday night.

I can tell a few stories.....maybe laterI am celebrating
