Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Posted my intros and hellos in the intro form, thanks all for the insight and responses. Going to cut and paste the intro here as well. In southern Wake Co., read Fuquay Varina. New to the sport and coming off the couch. Watched a good friend compete in his first tri a couple weeks ago and he has talked me into giving it a shot. Coming off the couch, 10yrs and two kids ago was a half decent cyclist (Mtn and road) and have been a swimmer for a long time. Nervous about finding time to train with job, wife, kids. But need a goal and a lifestyle change for mind and body. Watching schedules for late season races in the Triangle area of NC, thinking Oct but may be too abitious. Going to this fall or early spring '10. I welcome advice on training, and looking for a good pool in RDU area, any suggestions? Shooting for the Lake Royale race or there is another in Huntersville first week in Oct. Thanks in advance. 2 black dogs |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome to the club. I think you'll find LOTS of folks out and about to train with. I'm not sure how many triathletes are down in Fuquay, but up here in Apex/Cary, there are TONS. You can find packs, herds even, of cyclists on the roads around Jordan and Harris Lakes, tons of runners out on the American Tobacco Trail and in Umstead, and usually some brave open-water swimmers in Jordan Lake on occasion ![]() If you want to see what the scene is like, come on up to Harris Lake July 12th, it'll be the first year for this event at this venue (was held at Lake Crabtree, an allegedly-PCB-infested lake). Keep an eye on this forum for "organized" rides in the area. Also check out InsideOut Sports for additional information about races/training etc. As for a pool, Pullen is usually a good option, but might be a little far for you (it's off Western Boulevard, right beside NC State campus). As for myself, I use Life Time Fitness in Cary. 3 miles from work, 6 miles from home, indoor and outdoor pools, good classes, etc. About $115/month for a family of 4. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() I live in the Fuquay area and will be doing my first triathlon in July at the Triangle Tri. I also am married, work full time and have 4 kids. So needless to say, I have a busy schedule myself and know your feeling. I just had to make the commitment to myself and do it. I usually find time before work to get in my swims at the YMCA in Holly Springs in the summer and swim on my lunch breaks in the winter at the YMCA in Cary, it's indoors. These are both relatively close to Fuquay. Then at lunch I alternate between runs and riding the bike. If you are interested in doing a sprint tri, this should be plenty of time to get your training in. The distances aren't that long to get ready for. Of course, I say all of this without actually competing in a triathlon yet but I do think that I am ready for it. I had been running half marathons the past year and can say that the transition to training for the triathlon is much more fun than just running everyday. It's a nice variation to be doing something different all the time. If it's really something that's nagging at you to do then set your mind to it and get out there and do it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm also doin the Triangle Triathlon. I'm horrible at swimming and have biked and ran previously, but am not a pro! If you can get thru the 750m swim, i think you'll be fine for the rest of the race. I rode the bike portion last Sunday, and its a really good ride. and the run is all in the park area. As everyone has stated, try to find a YMCA or Masters class to get into the swim skill again- it sounds like you've got that under wraps tho. but it'll still be good to know that you can currently do the distance. I swim intervals almost every morning at my community pool (25m lap pool). My long bike rides take about 2 hrs on the weekends (~28mi.) Runs can take minimal time (usually preformed prior to dinner after work hours) - while i reserve the weekend for long runs of 10mi or so. The best scenario i could suggest is just tough it out and wake up early and get an hour or two of training in. Good luck! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Myself and another from my mentor group will be riding in the Triangle Tri as well. If you have never seen a tri before you might want to volunteer at one before you race. The Smile Train is in Wake Forest on 6/28. It is a sprint. It is a great way to learn about the rules and watch transitions. They can always use the help. I am racing that one. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks all for the information and responses. Checking out pools and gyms in the areas. Swam this am, been a long time but it felt great. I am learning time management is the key. Still a little iffy about an ows, I have water skied all my life but some how that feels different. My goal is the Lake Royale race in Oct. I would love to join in some group rides out by Harris Lake, we see groups on Sun am coming off the lake with the fam, the only issue is my bike is not exactly up to date, it works but it is dated, looking to upgrade but on a budget. My try for a ride in a month or so, let me work through this first mo of training. Again thanks for the info and I will be updating soon. |

My goal is the Lake Royale race in Oct. Cycling Spoken Here in Apex has tons of weekly rides that leave out at 6pm, pretty much daily. Hook up with one of their "B" or "C" rides to get your feet wet. While not extremely hilly, the roads around Apex are not flat. I still ride my 2000 Giant OCR3 (riding it in a metric century this weekend). It has Shimano Sora 8-speed... I mostly ride my '06 Felt though (with 6200+ miles on it!) |

We meet at about 6:15pm on monday nights at Fuquay Varina United Methodist Church on Judd Parkway. We leave at 6:30pm. The group is open to anyone who wants to ride. Member![]() ![]() | ![]() Shorter and slower, is that code for old and fat, because that is my group.......right now anyway ![]() Really, sounds fun, need to check out and very close to home. |

Veteran![]() ![]() | ![]() Shorter and slower are those of us that are training for different rides and we average about 13-14 mph, depending. The faster and longer group averages closer to 17-20 mph. I am in the shorter and slower group because I fell behind in my training due to a ridiculously long bout with a sinus infection. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck and welcome. The sinus infection thing is really getting old for me..... contributing to me staying out of the pool for a LONG time. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I started training for my first tri, a sprint, 4 months before the race. I just bought a low end bike off ebay before spending any real money. it can be done. I am just getting back into riding and might try to get with some of these groups as well. |
