Pre-race routine:

hmmm...where to begin?? million stories. well...pre-pre-race was to cheer on friends and fellow BTers at Hyannis 2 on saturday. LOts of good times seeing Joe (onthe run) and Nicole and so many others and giving support.
ok...next ....atttended pre-race dinner and breifing for the race on sat night and met so many nice people. Ate dinner w a guy in his 60's who was doing the race, socialized w a sweet couple from LA. Just a wonderful time! Spoke to dave (hudnick) via cell to get caught up. He is a nice guy.
LOL...ok just a bit more pre-pre race details. Slept in my car behind a LBS. 2 other cars there too so a few other tri folks were roughing it too. (not to worry too much, I have a wagon and the back is long enough to be comfy)
OK....so now PRE-RACE!! Good nights sleep, woke on my own at 5:30, still dark and the others were gone (LOL...eek..maybe they werent tri folks maybe just 'parkers'...d'oh, I am too OLD and never thought of that ;)) Only a mile or so from the site and got there in plenty of time to get a cleaned up and changed and still rack up and have a quick b-fast. God...such a beautiful venue. peaceful, emerging sunrise over the roaring surf, sounds heard first and then to see emerging scene, amazing.
Ok...so..bounced into Hudnick(dave) and trigirl069 (stacey) and Capt. Jack Sparrow (rob) around the racks. Said our good lucks. Rob graciously accpetped the role of COACH extrodinaire!! Chief photo guy and cheer leader!! Thanks ROb.
Event warmup:

Event warmup consisted of a 1/2 mile walk down the beach to the race start. Nice way to get going. Met capt jack and doolin;? (I think) on the beach. Small bit of stretching, short dash into the water to get wet and check the bottom and depth conditions. (very sandy bottom, no rocks, shallow for quite a bit and a good row of surf waves.
Swim
  • 39m 35s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Concentrated on rotating and 'over the barrel' arm movements. Felt comfortable for the swim.
When I stood up from the swim I had 38 min on the watch and new I had done better than last year. Now stellar by any means but "GOOD ENOUGH"!! Cut about 6 mins off last years swim.
LOL...only mishap was the last yard before the beach. The guy ahead of me stepped in a hole and went down to his knees at the waters edge. I tell myself.."dont do that" and of course what do I do!! "PLOP" down!! right in front of the official photographer!! That will be a GREAT pic!! The guy and I laughed all the way to the racks about the mishap. Nice to smile and laugh!!
What would you do differently?:

LOL....how about 'not fall'!! well....how about....swim more, do masters (I know, I know ,MAY, I said that last year!! ;)) Swiim was decent and acceptable for me and was overall happy w it. Just endurance, not speed.
Transition 1

Comments:

T-1..hmmm.....kinda dazed. Not as clear as I would have like to have been but made some good decisions in the end about clothing. Rt. knee was waht was throwing me. Couldnt figure out what was wrong. Then the 'D'oh" moment!! abrasion and bump from the fall on the beach. Minor scrape and laughed it off once I figured it out.
Had my ankle socks rolled up so the went on well over wet feet. Glad I didnt wear a shirt under wetsuit for the swim,. Good idea for sprints but long races I would recommend a dry shirt for the bike. A little bit tough getting it on but worth it.

Best of all was the "HEY GLEN" from Coach Rob and a quick pic!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing much really.
Bike
  • 3h 00m
  • 56 miles
  • 18.67 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike leg. Felt comfortable, kept an eye on cadence mostly. Worked in the 90's range. I have a triple chainring but the rear cogs are VERY small (need to change them before next year) so I have to use all the gears thru the course. Hills were a good challenge, fun coming down at 30 plus mph!!
LOL...yeah almost forgot. Best part that helped pass the time was playing TAG w/ a young lady.(being the DOM that I am, right kristen and Jen;)) We kept passing each other over about 25 miles and say 'Tag, your it'. LOL...she passed me in the last 100 yds and we laughed.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I am happy w. the bike. Good mental and physical effort. Didnt over eat or drink for me. 2 gels, 1 bar, 1.5 bottles of GU drink (hmm...30 oz?)
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

What I gained on the bike and swim I "lost in translation' or better yet 'lost in transition'. Came into T-2 and stood in the 500 racks and couldnt find my stuff, kept moving around....still nothing, started thinking that someone had screwed w my stuff....then realized...."D'OH, I' am 454 not 545!!!! LOL...body marks are probably for this reason eh!! oh well...found my stuff and got squared away.
First time w my new speed laces and they worked great. Changed into my BT singlet (had to wear the company colors!!) and threw my camelback pack on (great idea if you are so inclined and dont mind the incessant sloshing sound)and headed out. Hit the head for a quick pee. Also had to deal w/ some negative thoughts about not being able to do this. Big deeep cleansing breaths, think of all the crap I have been thru and 'sucked it up, buttercup'!
What really changed the mindset was to lift the old chin up and forge ahead and what do I see.....Coach Rob!! (damn man, I couldnt let him down now could I!) HEY GLEN!! quick pic and a smile.
What would you do differently?:

remember my @$%^ number!!!! (ahhh. old age)
Run
  • 2h 35m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 6.5 miles were great! 10 min miles and only a small walks thrut he water stops. Felt good. Kept telling the old bod to just get thru 1/2 of the run at a good pace.
Second hald was rough. I had not run enough long runs nor any long ones off the bike so I knew I was pushing it. Legs were good but just running out of endurance. Met up w the lady from the couple from dinner so we chatted off and on as we passed each other. Otherwise than that i just got thru one mile marker to the other.
The final 2 miles I did run though. The final mile was were the emotional barrier broke. No one to lean on this time, jsut had to push on and %$#@ BEAT last year!!! Knew at this point I could.
Got to the 1/2 mile soft sand beach run and was just running on empty. That damn fisnish line looked ssssooo far away, maybe too far. SLogging thru soft sand I hear "HEY GLEN" and there is coach rob!!! qucik pic and he says....'hey, run down here on the hard sand!!!' "oh yeah..."(dazed boxer gaze) Wow that felt better!! Picked up the pace, (Had this not happened I would not have beaten last years time) and stumbled , ran to the finish portal!!
God,,,got that done!! Made it. I was about to emotionally crash but there was ol' coach Rob there at the finish line and I couldnt blubber all over him now could I? nah! Made it,
What would you do differently?:

more endurance runs and long bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

shade, drink and meet up w. those speed demons Dave and Stacey!! (wow, they are great triathletes) Spend some quality time talking to them, a few BT pics (unfortunately we missed 'doolin') (I will post when I get to a scanner)
Tried to eat but had no appetite, which was too bad because the chicken looked great. What did taste great....watermelon and coke!! so I ate that.

Packed up and headed out.

Spent lots of time on the past year and how fortunate I am to even be able to race after this year of divorce. The past 10-11 months have been shattering. The only constant in life was friends and triathlon training. I followed no plan this year. Just...just DID. Forrest Gumped it. Just ran. Did what I could, when I could, how I could. Knew what I needed to do. Just went on the race circuit to give me goals and something to look at when the days were dark. Many dark days. Felt like a 'counting crows' tune.
I know what I am and what I am not..........
phew....cant write about this part anymore. If you've been there, or close, you know.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Old age!! :)

Special thanks once again to Rob. for...being there. Also thanks to all you BTers for getting me thru the year. Ya'll are fantastic. Ron, special kudos for making this place a community.

Event comments:

FIRM put on good races. FIRMMAN and this one in particular was GREAT! They made some changes and improvements that greatly enhanced the experience. Pre -race dinner, post race BBQ. Social times. Well marked course, mile markers on the run and on and on.
Pleasant and fun race.

Great Race Glen!!

Nice job of beating last years swim time by 6 minutes. Sounds like me falling where the previous person was. Again you are an awesome on the bike. Glad you had the will to fight through and finish the run.

Cool you beat last years time!!

Rob, the coach, helped a lot...he is so supportive.

Glen...I am glad you were able to tri this year and I hope you continue to enjoy them. You have been very supportive and encouraging to me.

What's next? Hope you can make it to the MA BT gathering. We need to firm up the details.

Heh! Not bad Glen. Guess I shoulda been there to return the favor and pace you through the run!!! Still, looks like a solid race to me. I'm not gonna see a sub-6 hr. 1/2 IM, so we're stuck in the same "old age" boat together!

Glen,
Great job yesterday at the race!! So nice to be able to see you and chat.  Feel like I have known you for a long time.  Times are not the important thing, when looking at everything else going on in the world, just being able to train and do something that you enjoy is the important thing.

Great seeing you and Great JOB!!!!!

Adios
Dave

Wow Glennie!! I'm in awe once again!!!  With all that has gone on.....YOU TOTALLY ROCKED THIS RACE SEASON!!

You slept in your car???!!!! Wow again!! If I did that it would take two hours to get moving enough to race at all.

So, the other cars might have been parkers, eh?  What happened to your DOM radar there? Glad it came back before the race ended

Running on sand at the end of a half mary is just not on....good for you for toughing that one out!

YAY!!!! {{ finishing line hug  }}

We want to see the pictures!!!!

Glen, awesome race.  This year, I signed up for a tri at the last minute and drove the 3 hours to the race the eve before.  I also considered sleeping in my car, and 20 years ago, I might actually have done it.  However, I checked into a hotel and thought I might even have benefitted from "staying at a Holiday Inn Express".  No dice.

Again, congrats on the successful campaign this summer and on a great accomplishment with this race.

Glen,

CONGRATS again and good job beating your time from last year!

I have to say the funniest part of the day for me was yelling to you from outside the T-Area: "Hey Glen! Your bike is 2 rows over!"

The best part of the day… Seeing you with the medal around your neck!

Good work out there. Even though you’ve been through a lot this year you got some great training in and it paid off!

Oh… and thanks for dropping me on the run up the beach. I was out of breath trying to keep up with you and all I did was sit on my butt all day!

Glen,

You're an inspiration! Awesome job! Some day when you're really old (90+), you can pull this race report out and show the great-grandkids how it was done back in the day.

Glad to hear your loosening up. Keep it up!

Ah ha! Finally found it!

Wow Glen, what a race! You are right about Forest Gumping it on the training....that finish time was AMAZING for just kinda going out and doing it, without obsessing over the distances in training! Just Do It! That is definitely a sign of true athletic ability!

And knocking off 6 minutes from 2004's time?? Forget Masters! That's awesome!!

Kudos for sleeping in your car the night before and not being knotted up and sore in the morning LOL

Your day was quite an adventure, which to me is what makes tris fun. Meeting up with good people (BT'ers), laughing at yourself (lost in transition, falling into a hole, realizing hard sand is easier to run on than soft), and knowing you pushed your body as hard as you can and did a damn good job!

I'm not a fan of FIRM but perhaps I'll try this race next year

Enjoy the off season!

Awesome job of working out a year's worth of frustration! Sometimes it's good to have a plan and sometimes Forest Gumping it is exactly what your mind needs. Heck, you even managed to take some time off last year's result. Awesome.
