Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30 am. Had some breakfast, frosted flakes. Drove to the parking lot and grabbed the shuttle. Got my numbers and set up transition. Made it to the swim start just as the horn went off for the pro Mens start.
Event warmup:

I almost forgot! I never tried on my wetsuit, never listened to DeSoto's suggestion and the thing was hard to put on. I barely got in a swim to warm up. Where's my head at, I was like doing this for the first time.
Swim
  • 32m 39s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

Man now I know it feels to get stuck in a washing machine at full cycle. The first 600 yards were brutal me . Against the current and over the waves made the effort incredible. Everytime I sighted was a disappointment. After the turn it was a bit better. Thank God I could breathe bilaterally or else I would have drank a ton of water. The last section was easire since the current / waves were helping but by this point my arms were tired. Also felt some impingement in my right shoulder almost from the start of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

I need to try and simulate rough OW swimming. I've never swum in waters like that. I wasnt panicking just could get my rhythm.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

I clearly was spent getting out of the water. I couldnt get any speed jogging into transition. Even worse I couldnt reach back and unzip my wetsuit. Once I did unzip, before reaching my bike, the suit came off quickly. I thought the time would have been better. Certainly under 3 min.
What would you do differently?:

Not running in made the diffence in time. Everyhting else went pretty smooth.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 9s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.33 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was different than last year and I was trying to anticipate what was next. This was a great improvement for me from last year BUT I received a drafting penaly!!. I really wasnt drafting at all which is why this hurts. I guess everyone says this but I wont waste time on this. The bike was great and it's my favorite leg of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not penalized. Pray for global warming so we can ride earlier in the NE without freezing temps (just kidding, for you greenpeace folks).
Transition 2
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

Considering I had to rack my bike, remove my helmet and glasses and put on my shoes and hat, this transition took longer than expected. I purposely had my race belt on under my wetsuit so I wouldnt have to do it during the transition. WTF everything in this race from getting here to finishing it was Crazy Weird.
Run
  • 55m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Kept telling myself I was too slow on the run....glad I did cause I think it really helped speed things up. I was hoping for an 8:20 pace but glad it was under 9. My throat was burning between the salt water I drank in the swim and the gatorade. First race this year and I have a lot of work to do. I am clearly not in the shape I wanted be in.
What would you do differently?:

Better training schedule.
Post race
Warm down:

Best part of the race is the warm down. BEER, FOOD, BEER and FOOD Yep that about covers it. Oh and BEER.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Winters in NJ, Better training schedule.

Event comments:

I clearly did better than last year, but I was hoping for a little more...Next year maybe!. Also had a great at the after party with the BT-ers, great group had a lot fun....Thanks Guys!

Oooh, sucks about the bad drafting penalty. There were so many times where I was in a pack of people and I couldn't get out of it. Can you protest a penalty? Anyways, it was grea to meet you, sorry we couldn't stay longer at the BT party- we had a 4 hr drive home, plus a stop in Sarasota. Congrats on a great race, and next time be sure and test your wetsuit out!

Bob O'Malley!

I feel you on the drafting penalty.  I got dinged last year with one at this race.

Solid race.  You did better than last year, in tougher conditions.  That counts for something in my book!

Great to meet you, and hope to see you again next so we can both poke fun at the next person who gets dinged for drafting.  :D

Good job!! Drafting penalties suck, especially when you don't deserve them. I saw plenty of people who did deserve one! My run was like yours. I thought I was running faster but the splits weren't what I thought they should have been.

Hey Jeff, thanks. You had us crying with those SouthPark quotes...right up to the point I got up and said..."Screw you guys, I'm going home". I actually had to meet my family for dinner before flying out Monday. Wish I could've stayed longer.

I'm just totally psyched that I got to meet the legendary Bob O'Malley in person.  I hear ya on the global warming too.  Those rising ocean waters would put the coast a little closer for more OW swim practice.

Grats on a great race.  It was awesome to meet you in the flesh.  Sorry about the drafting penalty.    But, it sure is fun giving you grief about it.

You met Bostic in the flesh?  HOLY HELL!!!  I hope that wasn't what you meant by 'family dinner'.

Great race, esteemed O'Malley...awesome effort and an improvement over last year in dirty, no-good conditions...it's an accomplishment, period.  Take it to the bank knowing you're about three months ahead of everyone else that lives in NJ.

Next year...we kick additional ass.  Yes, additional.

Not a bad race for a Yankee fan...they lost last night ya know...just thought I'd mention it.

Where was I?  Oh yeah...great race.  You're right...it's April...LOOOOOONG season ahead...no April champions as my coach likes to say!

Bob...it was a pleasure!  Now, quit drafting, will ya?

Hey Drafter, I mean Bob (whatever that means) Jose, Nice job, especially considering the rough conditions and your first time wth the suit (same here). DOH!! You did better this year than last with worstererer conditions so you know you did far better than what numbers you can put down on paper.

Noticed the post from Rollin Bones. If you guys are doing the Harriman series, so am I. Maybe we'll meet up there or next year at St. A's.
