I was running on the treadmill last night listening to Rush. They are my favorite band.
They do however change time signatures like every 3rd measure though so really not the best for running in time to the music.

That got me thinking about what is better, picking a song that has a nice steady beat to run with?
Or songs that you connect with on another level where the beat is not in time with your steps but motivate you just the same?

So what is your preference in your play list?

Depends on the goal of the run or my current mood. If I need a pick me up I'll go for something a lil harder and faster, if I am doing a long run and need to focus on pacing I'll pick a more mellow genre. Don't necessarily really "listen" to the songs so that is not a big deal.

I do have a really annoying issue of getting a song stuck in my head and tending to run to that song if I am running without music. So it is important for me to listen to the correct songs on the way to a race so I get the correct song stuck there for the race.

Energetic and motivating but not timed to a beat/pace.

I'm a creature of habit and tend to listen to the same workout music all the time. For the last year or so my running "partner/music" has been the first 4 Metallica albums on random. Since I listen to the same thing for each run it has become part of my "zone" and at times I don't even really hear the music, it's just part of the background.

The music of my heart.  The birds singing.  The rhythm of my feet hitting the ground.  The canon of my breathing and my dog panting.

Anything from David Hasselhoff, preferable the German versions.  That's my jam...

This year I was into the "electronic dance" station on Pandora. Something where I can listen to the beat but not necessarily move my feet to it.

I rarely run with music, but if I do it's just to listen to something I like and has nothing to do with BPM or my cadence.

Definitely no music while racing though.

Music would just drown out the voices in my head. Besides, sometimes the voices sing to me, so, what's the point of having more than one song playing?

Usually trance or house. I listen to that normally, so I really enjoy it.

Almost never listen to music while running, unless feeling really tired on a brick run or (yuck) confined to the treadmill by bad weather. In that case, Hawaiian (Hapa, Brudda Iz, Hawaiian Style Band, Olomana, etc.) All I need to do is hear the songs and mentally, I'm running Tantalus, Manoa Valley, or Diamond Head (lived in Honolulu for two years) and in a better place.

Totally surprised that there was no reference of Axel in this post!

Try doing the airdrums to YYZ while running. That is guaranteed to throw you off your pace and make you look like you are having "issues"

I have to fight really hard not to do this
It's not as bad when outdoors, but the treadmill is very unforgiving for sudden pace changes!

Who is this "Axel" you speak of? ...I thought it went without saying the voices were Axl's...the wide range from hellishly, demonic lows to angelic, glass-breaking highs!

Seriously, working inside all day, when I get a chance to be outside I want to hear birds, I want to see and feel nature. It's tough for me to feel all that with music playing.
