Pre-race routine:

Tough night of sleeping...not really the race, just a lot of other things on my mind. Woke up late; but made it in plenty of time. Stopped at QT for a coffee. Ate a bananna and drank a liter of water. Had about an hour to mill around, warm-up, stretch.
Event warmup:

Jogged for about 8 or 10 minutes...did some light stretching.

Comments:

Beautiful day! Man, it couldn't have been better.

I lined up with the 9:00mpm pace group. Noticed there was no-one in the 5mpm pace group. Thought about going up there and then running like a mad-dog for about 10 minutes...then I would have died and went back to the car. But it would have been fun. Opted not to do that :-)

A mile in we hit a pretty good hill...steep and long. By the Liberty Memorial. But since it was early in the race it wasn't a problem.

Was keeping pace with those around me for most of the race. At about mile 6 I slowed up a little and some folks passed me. I stayed with the next group most of the race.

At mile 10 it really started to get tough. I was trying to keep my pace, but it was a struggle. The lungs were fine, but the legs were not cooperating.

My left hip was good. I stopped to stretch it a couple of times. Funny though, the right one started to get tight. And remained that way for the last 5 or 6 miles. But I ran through it.

Goal was 2:10. Met that and then some :-) About halfway through the race I realized I could break 2:00. The last 2 to 3 miles I was pushing it...you would think a guy could get 24 seconds off his time. But, it wasn't going to happen. I was truly going as fast as I could the last mile.
What would you do differently?:

Run Faster of course...

Start out further back in the pack. I noticed some faster people passing us during the first couple of miles. I guess their strategy was to start farther back and then run to their pace group. I would rather do that than start in the middle and have bunch of folks pass me.

Great job beating your goal.  That 24 seconds is just the carrot to push you in your training for your next one!

Shawn,
You did what you wanted.  I bet you could think of someplace you lost that 24 seconds, but it is water under the bridge.  Good job getting out there and running.
