My training plan has a swim followed by a run does this have to be done right after the swim or at anytime in the same day?

If that was me I'd do the swim before work (5.30-7am) and then the run after work (around 6pm).

You can do it straight after the other to save time, this is good if you have a bike then a run because it gets you used to running off the bike because your legs feel like jelly.

Unless you are extremely pushed with time, just do one in the morning and the other in the afternoon/night.

Also welcome to BT, enjoy this website people are really helpful.

Occasionally plan will specify that they relate to each other.  For instance, it might be "ride 12 miles then run 2 immediately off the bike".  Unspecified, you can do them any time.  I could swear I read something that said they are meant to be split.  But I do whatever works in my schedule.

The more time between the better.  Allows for rest and recovery to hit the next workout that much harder.

HOWEVER, for most people, get them in when you can.  I usually get the shorter workout in during lunch and the other right after work.  If not, I may do them back to back after work.

Just as long as I get them in, basically.

Leave as much time as you need.

Make sure to fuel before each.  I like to eat a Clif Bar or a small bowl of oatmeal around 60 minutes prior.  Even a banana or a two tablespoons of gel gets the job done for me.  I find this especially helpful on days where I do a double workout.

I swim in the morning (6am) and run in the evenings.

Very often do AM swim/PM run on Thursday or Tuesday.  On Saturdays, though, I sometimes do run (or ride) right after swim, because the open lap swim hours don't start until 9 am.

Does anyone have issues if they run...THEN immediately swim? I have had major cramping issues if the swim is long enough, and my arms feel like lead. Really odd. I stopped doing that.

Agree with all the above though. Split em up is best, but just get them in whenever/however.

Anytime.

Since I was doing IM training and I have a family with 3 young boys, scheduling was tough most of the time.  I have done some (almost) 2 hour swims followed by a 1 hour or so run (within 10 min. or less) after the swim, after work, a couple of times.

I've started swimming right after my run, and haven't had any cramping issues.  The key for me is hydration during the swim.

I live 2.5 miles from the pool, so sometimes run down, swim, and then run home.  I've never noticed an issue going from the run to the swim.  In the five or so minutes it takes to transition, heart rate is usually down.  I drink a little water, but no food.  And then a few warm up laps before getting into it.  I find the run home (which is mostly uphill) quite a bit harder than a normal short run, though.

My calves tend to get iffy and will start to cramp after 2000 yards or so right after a run.  I do these, but don't hesitate to stop if my calves decide to call it a day.

I typically do the other way around, though.  I figure in a tri I am always going to be tired on the run, so might as well train that way (and it fits my schedule).

When I have a swim and a run on the same day, I always run FIRST, and then immediately swim after. It just works out better since there is a nice running trail right next to the YMCA I swim at. And since I'm all sweaty from running and would have to shower anyway, I might as well shower at the YMCA and get my swim done right then and there.

If I were to swim first, I'd end up taking three showers in the process... shower before swim, shower after swim, shower after run.

One of my favorite workouts is to run to the pool, swim, then run home.  I don't know whether that's the textbook way of doing things, but I really like that workout.
