Regular 304 | Subject: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread Though I'm an out-of-towner for this race, I lived in Raleigh for seven years in the '00s. I'm really excited about WTC bringing a race to the area and hope we can generate a lot of good discussion about the course, share some tips for newcomers, and offer encouragement to all. My name's Kent, I have done half a dozen or so HIMs and look forward to this race as a chance to visit friends, see some familiar sites and to tune-up for Ironman Lake Placid in July. If you get a chance, introduce yourself and let us know your name, experience and goals. |

Concord, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread I live in Concord and we should have quite a few or our triathlon club members sign up for this race since it's so close. We'll also field at least one relay team, hopefully more. Here's our website if you want to check us out: www.h-ctc.com |

I'm from Scotland but lived in NC for about 4years now. I know it's corporate but v-excited the Ironman brand is putting a race on in my new hometown. I've heard they are really great events. Looking forward to the chat, stories and adventures we can all share in the forthcoming months. Donnie |

Member 57 Raleigh, NC | Subject: RE: Ironman 70.3 Raleigh : Official Thread I'm in! Very excited to have a race literally in my backyard. I'm going to train hard and have a lofty goal of under 5:00. The bike coarse isn't terrible but there are some hilly sections for sure. Daniel Edited by ssmokn98 2012-08-31 8:16 PM |

I had considered waiting to enter this race but that post forced my hand - I pushed my chips in and signed up. I've completed some longer races before (mary, ultra, HIM, etc.) but flamed out at IMLOU last month. Seems I overhydrated and ended up with hypovolemic hyponatremia. I'm eyeing IMFL 2013 so I plan on using Raleigh as a bridge to get started with my training for that event. I've got a cousin who lives in Raleigh and with whom I'll be crashing for the race. I've done the Krispy Kreme Challenge before but that's my only race I've done in the area. |

Having ridden on pretty much all the roads on the course I think the 1230 from the IM Raleigh site is more accurate. |

Having ridden on pretty much all the roads on the course I think the 1230 from the IM Raleigh site is more accurate. Hmmm, I don't know. I just reran it again, resetting elevation. Usually that cures any hiccups. But it came back at 2507 ft for the same route. I'm looking at the climbs, and here's what I see: 250 feet from T1 to 64 180 feet over the next 10 miles Big downhill pretty much to the end of Pea Ridge Start the long sucky uphill on Old 1 and climb 175 over about 6-7 miles 100 feet of random ups and downs down by Harris Lake 250 feet of BIG climbs back up Avent Ferry (remember the backside of Triangle? Get to go reverse up those) 300-400 at least until about mile 48 Big downhill and big uphill about mile 49, about 100 feet More big down and up on Lake Wheeler (around Yates Mill area), 100-150 That only adds up to about 1700, but I'm sure I'm missing a lot of the 50-100 foot climbs. I won't discount that 2500 feet until I ride the course. |

I'm looking at the climbs, and here's what I see: 250 feet from T1 to 64 Have not ridden in the park, but I believe the 3mi from T1 to US64 is a solid climb 180 feet over the next 10 miles Once you cross the bridge on 64 it climbs decently to the right turn onto Beaver Creek. Then there are a couple of solid ups on Pea Ridge till the park entrance where Duke HIM used to start Big downhill pretty much to the end of Pea Ridge Start the long sucky uphill on Old 1 and climb 175 over about 6-7 miles Pretty much a consistant uphill on old US1 100 feet of random ups and downs down by Harris Lake 250 feet of BIG climbs back up Avent Ferry (remember the backside of Triangle? Get to go reverse up those) Pretty much what I think looks like the toughest 5mi stretch of the race once you cross the bridge over Harris lake until you get to Avent Ferry. 300-400 at least until about mile 48 Solid rollers on Optomist farm Big downhill and big uphill about mile 49, about 100 feet More big down and up on Lake Wheeler (around Yates Mill area), 100-150 Yep. Solid climb from Yates Mill pond up to Tryon Rd. That only adds up to about 1700, but I'm sure I'm missing a lot of the 50-100 foot climbs. I won't discount that 2500 feet until I ride the course.
Yep you could be right Bill. When you break it up like that. |
