Overcast
Total Time = 3h 32m 53s
Overall Rank = 2621/3029
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 104/134
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5AM, showered, ate bagel with peanut butter, sipped on powerade. Got to transition area around 6:15 to set-up (transition closed at 7AM), had Kirk bodymark me using my sharpie, set-up my transition, and headed over to swim start.
Event warmup:

No warm-up - I was nervous enough about the ocean swim with the rough seas, I didn't want to make it worse.
Swim
  • 36m 53s
  • 1635 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

At 7AM (elite start) the ocean was relatively calm - but by 8:25 (my wave), the wind had picked up and it was pretty rough again. Tough going out to first turn. After the turn, the waves tried to push you back toward the beach, so you had to work harder to keep your line. After the last turn, it was easier with the waves, but the waves were rolling so much it was difficult to see. I felt pretty good overall, since this was my first ocean swim and I was terrified before getting in.
What would you do differently?:

Start out a litte harder
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Not a great transition for me. I was a little dazed and queezy getting out of the water, so I took a little extra time. Gargled with a little extra water before getting on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Take off my watch before getting out of the full suit, so it didn't get stuck. I had no issues, of course, when I practiced earlier...
Bike
  • 1h 35m 43s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.58 mile/hr
Comments:

Got my pace up fairly high for several long stretches (17-20 mph), but the headwinds really messed with me and I also ended up 13-14 mph for stretches. I am fairly happy with this overall - since this is still a big improvement over last year.
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Slower than normal T2 - couldn't get my bike racked with wetsuit where it was. Took me a second to grab what I needed, although it was laid out correctly.
What would you do differently?:

Grabbed my race belt and hat and started running, instead of standing there to put it on.
Run
  • 1h 14m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 11m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Realized that I REALLY had to go to the bathroom as soon as I left transition. I figured there would be a port-a-potty at the first aid station - there wasn't. Felt crappy after the first .5 miles - side stitch that wouldn't go away. Quads started cramping up a little - I walked A LOT! I was frustrated with all the progress I made this winter with my speed, I wasn't even running!!! Found some nice people to run/walk with, anyway
What would you do differently?:

Gone to the bathroom sooner. Run!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Got the cold towel and wiped off. Sat down and stretched my legs and arms.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure - drank too much sea water, not enough water on bike, not enough electrolytes, didn't go to bathroom early enough...

Need to figure out what happened on the run and correct it for next time.

Event comments:

I liked this race overall - not sure if I'll do it next year or not, but I am considering it. Kirk heard a few people say the ocean was the worst conditions for any St Anthony's race, so I guess if I can do that, I could do it again.

Based on this race - I'm not sure if I'm going to do a half-iron this year. I'm going to register for the next couple of olympics on my schedule and see how I feel in July. I don't want to push things too far and not enjoy this sport.

Performance: Good
Time here is skewed, as I stopped to pull off my wetsuit as soon as I got out of the water (before I crossed the timing pad). Had some issues finding the zipper and then it got stuck on my watch... Kirk thought my swim was closer to 32 minutes, but I know it didn't take me 4 minutes to get out of the wetsuit - so I think my swim time was somewhere in between.

Congrats Heather! It sounds like a rough day out there, way to stick it out.

Don't be upset about the bathroom, it can happen anytime, any race. You've made amazing progress with your running so try not to let this race bother you.

Comet's right...that water was just one city-sized wave pool...insane stuff.  Just getting out of the water is impressive.  Lots of season left...way to kick its butt!

Way to overcome your fear of the ocean and stick it to that swim! Overall you did great, don't be discouraged over your run, its just something else to work on for this year.

Congrats Heather. I'd take it easy on yourself regarding the swim and wetsuit stuff. That's tricky even in the calmest of conditions. Under 4 mins. for a T1 with rough water and wetsuit is pretty darn good.

Macon 1/2 IM is just a month away. Plenty of opportunity!

Great job. Enjoy the rest of the season.

I agree with gullah.  The swim was TOUGH!  And taking on saltwater isn't the funnest thing in the world.  Congrats on your finish.

Great job!  Considering the conditions that you were under on Sunday, you should be very very proud of yourself.  Those monstrous waves almost swallowed us!  I'm hooked on tri now and I'm sure we'll be sharing many more tri stories in the future!

Heather, great race, great effort and awesome finish.  I agree with all the posters above, that was a very tough swim.  You did it and went on to complete a great effort.  I'm sorry we didn't get to meet in St. Pete and hope you have a great season of training and racing!

Heather:

I heard them call you name over the loudspeakers, but couldn't find you at the finish line.

While the swim was incredibly difficult, I am with you about the run ... it was just plain never-ending.  Don't be discouraged by the run performance.  You have all season to work on it before the South Carolina Half.

Great job on finishing a race with difficult conditions.

Heather - terrific job on your very first Olympic!

From what I've heard, I think I would have been terrified out in that water.  Way to get through it.

Keep the training up.  Hopefully we'll get to race together at one of the later Olympics this summer.  You'll be ready for a Half before you know it.

Congrats!

Hey.. you have come a long way to get to this point. A lot of hard work, trial and error, overcoming obstacles like your first tri swim... bottom line though is that you are here. Now it's only a matter of improving what you can. By completing this tri under those conditions, you have proven yourself in ways most people never even get a chance to. My suggestion is to keep on keeping on. Do the half in october, kill this race next year, just don't stop doing what you are doing. Congratulations on a great race. I'll see you around.
