Now THAT was stranger than fiction. Anyone who flew jets in the 1980s can tell stories of the Russian Bear (bombers) flying in our waters and our jets would fly up and harass them. There's a picture of an F-14 flying within feet of the bear....(actually it happened in 2006 too). http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1710973/posts. If there weren't people in the plane (like with a UAV) we would shoot it down. Actually, I heard a story about a Russian jet that had an engine outage, so the pilot ejected over east Germany. Then the engine kicked on and the plane flew into west Germany. There were two Phantoms that followed the jet, guns and missiles ready until it got over the sea and shot it down. |

Spies aren't necessarily protected by the Geneva Convention, so since it is a spy plane, it makes it ethically fine in my book for them to shoot it down. UAVs present a really interesting dichotomy for the laws of war and diplomacy. |

Yeah this stuff happens all the time really and it's dealt with behind closed doors or with an equal reaction. 16 miles isn't 12 miles though, they need a better radar system. |
