Subject: Working after first HIM

Hi all,

I need another advise.

I just found out that they changed my HIM  from a Saturday to a Sunday (don´t ask!).  I am a commercial pilot and am scheduled to fly a 3 hour flight on Monday evening at 8pm.

I did not worry about it until now as I thought I had the whole Sunday and most of Monday to recover.

Now its a different story as the race starts Sunday morning at 8:30am and I probably won´t be done until 3:30-4:00pm.

How did you guys feel after your first HIM? What pain and tiredness can I expect (I know its individual so I am just trying to get a general idea)?

I would really like to take the flight but I can try to get out of it by switching with a colleague if I have to.

Any advise?

You HIM is Sunday and you have a 3 hr flight the next day at 8pm?

I think you'll be fine.  The day after my HIM I was sore and tired but I could function.

.... and have a great race !

Depends on how much time you have put in already and how much you are going to exert yourself during the race.

Take the time to do a cooldown, ice the legs, do stretching, drink chocolate milk (if you aren't allergic) or some other recovery drink, get some recovery food in, and hydrate.

Do some massaging later that night and the next day, and stretch some more.  Don't overdo it, though.

I was going to recommend an ice bath after.  I have read here that many have felt better and recovered much faster.

X2. I actually was less sore the day after than I was two days later. The ice bath is a good idea, and remember to re-hydrate right after the race. That helps recovery, too.

I think you will be fine.  I have a friend who also flies commercial.  He did IM WI last year and had to work the next day as well.  No problems from his end, beyond some soreness.  Good luck with your HIM!

Ice bath might take a bit of time to do, try going straight into water after finishing the race. Focus on smart recovery will help you the following day.

I was quite sore after my HIM this year but did a 14 mile run a few days later.

Thanks everyone.

My husband said the same so I will keep the flight and hope for the best

I started to take icebaths right after training but it will not be possible right after the TRI. There will probably be at least 1 -1.5 hours until I can get in the tub but I guess I do it anyways....maybe it has some benefits after all.

I flew cross country early the next morning, and worked for the next two days then took my son rock hunting in the Mohave desert.  The timing wasn't ideal, but certainly doable.

I agree with the ice bath aftwards and trying to get into the water right after the run especially if it is cold.  My first half was on a Sunday and I worked the next morning after cramping the entire run.  It was not fun but doable.

I usually end up working the Monday after running a marathon (and then traveling home).  I work overnight shifts at an emergency veterinary facility so I'm on my feet and using my brain.  I haven't had a problem as long as I get enough sleep.  That being said, I think flying an airplane is a little different (reaction times more important, etc).  You know yourself the best but my guess is.... you should do everything in your power to rest up on Sunday night.  Have a great race!

Just how I like my pilots!

Really...You will do fine and the ice bath and recovery rest really do make a difference.

Imediately after my first HIM I drove 12 hours home.  After a few hours I did have to pop a few asprin for the calves (no cruise control major mistake).  I would think 24 hours would be alright, but I don't fly so not sure how much you use your legs.

Totally do the ice bath as well.

I see several folks think it will be ok but one thing for sure, you are responsible for just yourself in regards to piloting a commercial flight, thus, I think it would be wide to go ahead and rescheudle the work load now if you can.  Possibel fatigue combined with poor judgment, cramps, etc. = disaster.  Be smart.  Do the HIM, have fun, and relax on Monday and Tuesday, get back to the over charging and inefficient commercial airline business Wednesday (I meen that in good humor)

good luck!

I did my first HIM yesterday and am back working today. A little (OK a lot) sore, but OK otherwise. I think that is more than enough time to recover.

After a HIM I am thinking rock hunting is the best type of hunting because those buggers are generally pretty slow moving.  ;-)

How sore/tired I've felt after HIM has varied, according to how well-trained I was before hand vs. how hard I raced.  First HIM - very sore/tired next day.  Second HIM was Gulf Coast - My husband drove me home next day, I sat with feet up across back seat.  I felt worse after that race than I did Ironman Florida 5 months later.

I love Hammer Recoverite, and swear that drinking a bottle of it right after race does make a difference in fatigue and soreness the day after.  But try it in training first, of course.
