Yeah, if we get to suggest names, you could end up with Chalupa Batman.

actually, my wife is an adoption supervisor for a county. I will ask her general opinion on name changes when it's a kinship adoption.

(Please tell me someone gets the Chalupa Batman reference.)

Are you really going to decide based on majority vote by BT?

Thank goodness that Cervelo, infinit, or Zip wasn't on the list (or you could add it), you she would end up having an odd name for sure.

A name means something, it is part of that kids history, so I am not sure I would change it just because I did not like it. So for that reason...I'm out.

I am a little confused by your description and the poll and am not sure if one of the two spellings is the current spelling.  So I would vote for the current spelling (assuming it's either Maliyah or Malia) and the middle name Anne.  I think it's weird to rename people, dogs, etc, especially considering the tattoo (especially if she will know this grandfather) and the middle name of Anne gives her a reasonable second options if she grows up and doesn't like her first name enough to keep using it.

One argument for Maliyah. I  think there's a much smaller chance of it being mispronounced.  "Malia", which I assume is pronounced ma-lee-ah (as I would say Maliyah), could also be pronounced maul-ee-ah.  While I am not a big fan of "made up names" I think that both spellings are reasonable in this day and age.

P.S. congrats and pictures with updates please!

I picked "Anne" like "Annie" who was also adopted. Then you could be "Daddy Warbucks."

Congrats on the adoption!!!

I like the idea of "Anne" to tie in your own adoptive history.

I thought "Malia" looked a little plain so I voted for Maliyah.

I also see the point several people above have made about her name being part of the history though too....

I like the idea of calling her "Molly" and spelling it however you like. I work with a woman named Doris - HATES her name - goes by Lori - somepeople don't like their name, others do. I have spent my whole life spelling my name and explaining it's origin....sometimes I wish my name was Ann or Sue, but then I wouldn't be me either....

Congrats and thank you for what you are doing - not everyon would step up to the plate in these circumstances...

Child is 16 months old, and has been in our care for 5 months.

She was given the name for her biological grandmother Mary, but the birth mother wanted the Hawaiian version, which is pronounced "Ma-LEE-uh."  There is no connection to Hawaii, just a desire to name the her daughter after her grandmother, but she didn't like "Mary."  The common Hawaiian spelling is "Malia."

A new birth certificate will be issued, and she will have both my last name and my wife's (which is how our biological children have been named).

Changing names at adoption is very common in infancy, less so as a child ages.  Regardless, we have already started calling her "Molly," using the spelling "Mali" when writing it out.

Pics coming.

Whatever you name her, that's who she will be, you can't make a mistake here.

Congratulations!  From her age now to about age 4 - 5 is an absolutely great time!!  It's all great....but watching them become aware can't be beat.  Enjoy every moment!

I envy you....I've done it 5 times but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!
