Subject: Guys Only Workout?

This one is for the guys.  I'm currently building my personal training/fitness camp business.  My classes incorporate, cardio, balance, strength, core, agility, speed and endurance.  I know many women often like to workout out with just women, thus the Women only gyms, do guys ever feel this way?

I was thinking of having a "Guys Only" workout and call it "Warrior Camp".   So for the guys, having a Mens Only class, would you be less or more likely to go?

Have you seen the pace booty threads? Bad idea. In fact, the opposite would have better results.

Most guys don't have a desire to be around other sweaty guys in close proximity.  I don't think this class would go over very well.

I know I do. I really enjoy working out with just women.

Heterosexual guys in general don't have the insecurities that women do regarding working out with only their own gender.

Personally I don't really get into the group workout scene, not something that excites me very much. So the only way I would go to a group workout is if my wife made me go with her. She has convinced me to go in the past and I did enjoy parts of it, but it is not something I would sign up for on my own.

But all that said, the biggest problem I had with the group boot camp we took was the women! The first camp wasn't too bad, but the second sucked, I have never heard so much whining and complaining in my life. Also the instructor was relatively new so he fell into the trap of enjoying the limelight. The female participants figured out that if they pestered him with ridiculous questions or their thoughts for the day it would give everyone a longer break and a shorter workout. My wife and I quit that camp due to the ridiculous behavior.

So I think the women's or even a beginner only camp (as I know a lot of women are there to work) is a good idea for those unmotivated people who need a nurturing environment. But the co-ed class should have a different standard, no talking, no whining, just work. I think that might negate the need for a men's only camp and you would still be able to attract people like me who probably wouldn't go unless their wife signed them up as a couple.

Other ideas you may have thought of already...

A "couples" camp - does not matter the gender or relationship. Sign up with another person - your significant other, best friend, sister, mother. Sometimes, as someone else posted, doing something with another person (you know) is the best motivation.

A "singles" camp - see the triathlon dating thread. Enough said

Definitely less likely to go.  Most guys like to see women working out.  It is who we are, and how we are wired.  But, difficulty level is something I would consider.  If the workout wasn't worthwhile, I would be hard-pressed to continue, regardless of who was there.

You wouldn't get me anywhere near that class.
Now, find a way to combine your class with that "Yoga in shorts" thread and you just might have a winner!

I remember talking about this exact topic about 20 years ago in college.  I'm sorry, I'm weak.  I just could not (and still have trouble) concentrating with hot chicks in close proximity.  It did not and does not help my workout.

Unattractive women, fine.  Dudes, fine.  Hot chicks are my kryptonite.

If you do get the "guys only" thing going, this famous trainer (Mickey Goldmill) needs to be your spokesperson:

The other thing to consider is that within hours of posting the existence of a "guys only" workout class you will likely have people complaining that it is sexist, threatening to boycott your gym, calling the local papers, etc.

It is totally acceptable to have womens only classes, clubs and runs/events but if you do the same thing for men there are likely to be issues. I mean really, how many guys are protesting that "Curves" is sexist because men are not allowed? (Conversely, how many men care about having a guys only event?--not many)

Just wanted to throw some gas on the flames

Oh and to answer the original question, probably less likely to go but the sexual dynamic of the class doesn't really matter to me as long as the training is good. The best boot camp style instructor I know is a five foot tall female dynamo that can bring a group of fitness freaks to their knees.

I agree with the others.  Without women why would I go.  And if I did go to an all male class, why would I want a female instructor?  (just saying)  Strangely, at one of the gyms I used to go to, there was a male aerobics instructor that had all female classes that was the most popular class at the gym.  Hmmmmm.

I guess I am alone in thinking this is a good idea.  I am currently looking into yoga classes and since I have no flexibility and am a beginner the last thing I want to do is make a fool out of myself in front of a group of women.  Another plus is no jealousy issues from my wife.

I personally think single-gender workouts/races/whatevers are sort of douchey, and as a rule don't take part in them. But I'm not a guy.

i think these are wonderful ideas...maybe call the couples class something else so people don't assume "couples" but i reallllly think a gym - especially your big chain gyms that like to have lots of amenities - would see some pretty good attendance from an advertised singles class or "buddy system" class.

Same amount of likelihood = zero.  Camp for me is sitting on a stump or folding chair by a fire drinking a beer.

I think that if I read an ad for a guys-only workout, I would assume that it was targeted at the gay community. There are for-men-only yoga classes and other things like that in NYC, and that’s almost always what they are. So, no, not for me, but you could very well get a good response to your ad.

I think a guys only workout would work if it was a weightlifting workout. Something like Intro to weightlifting and then have more advanced classes in order to keep guys abilities on a standard for the workout. I think this would work for guys who feel embarassed or what not when lifting weights. I am pretty sure a guy would feel pretty bad if he was working out with a girl who could lift more than him.

Well, Abbie DOES live in San Francisco!

But a girl leading it... well, I would think a bunch of dudes into dudes would want a man leading the class. ????
