GnR!! Of course I know that there are a lot of Axl haters...but he really carried the band and is one of the greatest voices ever in rock!

If GNR wins in this pole, I'm going to hang myself.  Sure they are good, but they're a flash in the pan compared to Metallica's longevity.

Metallica, all the way.

At least most of the original members are still together.

My problem is that in my mind they are in two different categories.  GNR is more hard rock and Metallica I put in the Metal group.    I like early GNR songs better than Metallica.  But Axl really turned me off when he decided to not do shows or be to messed up to do a show or start 3 hours late.  That puts Metallica in the lead.

I voted Metallica. I like GNR, but early Metallica is the gold standard for me.

I'm pretty sure Jethro Tull has the Heavy Metal category all locked up...

The vote may be closer than a presidential race in FL, but I go with Axl.

Unreal. Jethro Tull beats out Metallica and Janes Addiction in the heavy metal category. Who voted for these awards back in the 80's?

wow - tied up! This is interesting. I had to go GNR cause I've bought more of their albums over the years - but I listen to Metallica more these days (although only the old stuff).

Gotta go with my hometown boys....GNR.  Izzy went to my high school and Axl went to a high school in the same county.  Besides who doesn't sing along to Welcome to the Jungle?

A little fyi here straight from a primary source.  I'm sure 90% of the public views Axl as a nut-job...but if you look more closely, I think you'll find he's been brutally honest over the years.  Here's his take on the fallout of the '92 GNR-Metallica "co-headlining " tour which had Metallica opening for GNR:

Honestly, someone mentioned it earlier, the 2 bands aren't exactly apples and apples.  GNR is much more diverse...the sentimental (roses) of November Rain, Don't Cry, Patience, Sweet Child O' Mine, Estranged, This I Love...and the angry (guns) Welcome to the Jungle (heck, half of Appetite for Destruction), You Could be Mine, Coma...and countless songs that shift emotional gears faster than Axl flipping a switch at a show.  Awesome!

Metallica is an incredible band...but they're a different animal. (both are excellent)  And yes, props to them for holding it together for so long.

They toured together, alternating who would open the shows. Proceedings came to an abrubt halt one night in Montreal(I think) when J Hetfield walked into the path of some on-stage fireworks and took a nasty burn. Exit Sandman, and the night ends in a riot, which would be a pretty much essential part of any Metallica/GnR double bill anyway...
