Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've found there's two types of people when it comes to discussing triathlon, the type that admittedly know nothing about them and the type that pretend to know it all. Last night while at a birthday party for a friend ( I knew 2 out of 20 people there) a guy I never met was told by my friend that I was training for an Ironman. This goober went on to tell me how he used to do a triathlon every weekend. When he said this his wife looked at him and frowned. It was an obvious "stretch of the truth". This guy was 50lbs overweight and looked as though he's never done anything athletic. Maybe the giant wad of chew under his lip gave it away. Anyway, he went on to say how he has a $6000 bike and asked if I owned a bike. I laughed and said I own 5 bikes. I asked him what kind of bike he owned, he said a Trek 1200. A $6000 Trek 1200??? I normally don't bite on conversations like this but this guy annoyed the hell out of me. I ended the conversation by saying we should train together sometime and that he got ripped off paying $6000 for a Trek 1200. Do you guys play into these conversations of ignore them? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No, I usually just fart in their general direction, and then slap my bike helmet and tell them that their mother was a hampster and their father smelt of elderberries. |

Buttercup ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Well, there is another type - the kind that actually does know a great deal about triathlons. It doesn't annoy me when someone wants to inflate their ego; it amuses me and sometimes saddens me (depending on the circumstances). We're all flawed humans. Edited by Renee 2005-10-29 12:21 PM |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Why would you abuse your bike helmet because of the ravings of an over-inflated windbag trying to tell you your business? Oh, and I typically invite them to put their lactic aicd threshold where their mouth is. bts |

If only I were a quicker thinker. I know I'm still a beginner triathlete but I'm already getting frustrated with some things people say to me. I never had this strange curiosity regarding my cycling races I've competed in. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The only thing that counts is results. Period. In all honesty, invite him to ride, run or swim with you, or do the next local race. By the end of the day, it'll be clear if he's a windbag or a fat guy with incredible lungs. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know what you mean...sometimes you can roll your eyes and chuckle about goofy people like that and other times they just annoy the hell out of you. If I feel like "playing" with someone like that, I might start asking him questions---like you did about the bike and how much he paid for it, etc. It can be fun when they trip on their lies. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't know why, but I have yet to run into anyone like this. I usually find myself saying things like "but you could do a triathlon! If I can, you can!" Had this very conversation last night with a pastor from our church. Sounds like you handled it well though. |

Sounds like you handled it well though. I've found myself saying that a lot too..."You can do it." Maybe its a midwest thing, but I've had several people say..."That doesn't sound that bad." regarding a 140.6. Some seem to think that if they can swim a lap in a pool, bike around their neighborhood or run a charity 3k that an Ironman is no big deal. |

I had a guy tell me one time that cycling wasn't a sport because it's not hard work. He said his grandmother could ride a bike. Of course I told anyone can "ride" a bike, but it's a lot of work to "REALLY RIDE" a bike. This guy is extrememly overweight and does no physical activity, yet he calims cycling isn't a sport Hello!! |

I've found that at least 90% of the people on this planet were put here to just piss me off. Thank God for BT. |

New user![]() | ![]() unfortunately I thought that I had been doing really well with my bike training, but when one of my friends passed me on a big old mountain bike, I decided that I will just keep training and never tell anyone that I am doing triathlons. I felt like a right knob. |

So if my grandma can drive a car, does that mean Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr, etc. are a bunch of talentless hacks? Things my Grandmother can do, and the sports that are now totally invalidated because of that: Ride a Bike - Triathlon Run - Cross Country, most track and field events. Throw her knitting needles and good china in a gin-induced rage - the rest of the track and field events Drive - Indy, NASCAR, Formula 1, etc. Bowl - Bowling Swim - All Olympic Swimming events Catch something - Football, baseball, basketball. Kick the cat - Soccer. Therefore, because my grandmother is super talented (and could kick your grandmama's arse) there are no more "real" sports... bts |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've done 3 tri's this season and 4 other race events ... and I continue to embrace my ignorance of the finer details of training. Chalk it up to the "... more I learn, the more I know what I do not know." I have found that the folks that downplay triathlons the most are the ones who are fooling themselves into thinking that they are in shape enough or could "invest the month or so" in order to "easily" complete one. Your patience with this guy is commendable. I suspect that his wife gave him the treatment we all wish you had the satisfaction to deliver in one quick acerbic retort. BTW, I have a 'classic' 1991 Trek mtb I'd be willing to sell him ... |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think I may be a 3rd type. I swim/bike/run (About an hour a Day) but really too slowly to make competing any fun. Because I look reasonably fit, people assume I either race or could do a race. That is not me. On the other hand, I know enough about the training for competition that I certainly appreciate those who do. TW |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 1. Oipolloi, I have yet to run into that big a loser, or rather, pathological tri-liar. Never. 2. With respect to my grandmother, she recently enjoyed an afternoon of PARASAILING. Yes not kidding, my 84-year-old grandma went parasailing. She swims too. I figure if that's the genes i come from, then the bar is set pretty high! |
