Subject: Two HIMs in 2009?

So am I whacked to even think about this?

Under consideration for 2009 season:

26-Apr-09  St. Anthony's Triathlon St. Petersburg, FL Olympic
6-Jun-09
 Mooseman Triathlon Bristol, NH Olympic
28-Jun-09  Cohasset Triathlon Cohasset, MA Sprint
late June/early July  Patriot Triathlon Freetown, MA Half Ironman
23-Aug-09  Timberman Triathlon Gilford, NH Half Ironman
late august  Cranberry County Tri Lakeville, MA Olympic

and possibly another sprint or two....

2 HIMs 6-8 weeks apart....am I nuts? (well ok that part I know but for triathlons...)

The schedule looks doable. There's plenty of space between those halves, so you'll be fine unless you're severely undertrained for the first one. I would predict the last Olympic will not feel good, though. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, but it looks like the most difficult part of the schedule to me.

depending upon what they set the date for Cranberry as I may not do it....if there is 2 weeks between Timberman and Cranberry I would think about it, but one week likely not. But if I chicken out of Timberman then Cranberry would be a definite....

Totally Doable, I only looked at your logs briefly but with the right guidance you'll be good to go.

That's sweet you did SheRox, I was hanging out on the "hill" of the bike course with a whistle and 2 other dudes cheeing people on!

Its totally doable,  with some good planning/training.

I'm planning a big year for 2009

  • Ironman Dec 08
  • Huskisson Long course Feb 22
  • Possibly Murrayman long course March
  • Busselton Half Ironman May
  • Hopefully World Long course champs Oct (if I qualify with those other races )

so yep its totally doable.

With the right training and proper taper and workouts between the races it should be fine. FWIW, I just did two HIM's 3 weeks apart. I feel really good 4 days later and am ready to ramp it up for a mary in a few weeks. Good luck.

Totally doable. We have a guy in our training group...67 years old, world champion (Milos Kostiuk) who will complete 3 IM's in three months. Penticton, Washington are completed for him (with a marathon race in between), now he's off to Kona pretty quick.

Personally, I have no desire to work quite that hard, but I would do two half IM's in one year for sure.

You're not whacked at all. I'm planning on doing the Mooseman half as well as the Timberman half with an Apr local half and an Oct local half too so I'll see you at those two . I figure keeping them 6 weeks apart gives me a couple days off after each and time to ramp back up and taper before the next.

Cat,

Normally Timberman and Cranberry are back to back weekends that causes some to pause if they should register for both. Some do Cranberry as it is the big NE BT event as it if fun.

You could do both HIMs. I find that when you do HIMs if you work full time it is hard to do lots of races as weekends tend to be for longer workouts.

You are ready for HIM and to do it well...look what you did at Mooseman last minute?

if not for a wedding the night before the Duke 1/2 this year, I was doing three 1/2's in 2008.  Now just the bookends (may and november)  Completely doable, including the olympic at the end provided you have 2 weeks between races.

Your schedule looks great.  The Patriot is confirmed for the week before Cohasset.  Eric Averill, the Race Director and a friend of mine, has done a great job with the Patriot.  He wants to move it away from the July 4th weekend (where it has been the last 2 years).  Eric's Cranberry race is the weekend after Timberman.

Thank you for your interest in Cohasset!  I am venturing off into directing two other races - one of which I can share with you now.  It is the Cape Ann Tri in Gloucester.  It will be a sprint tri - 2 weeks before Timberman which will be a great tuneup to the Timberman.  I am partnering with Janda Ricci-Munn, an elite athlete and tri coach, with this project.  The other sprint I am working on is under wraps for now but it will be big.

Hope this helps with your 2009 schedule.

Bill Burnett, Race Director, Cohasset Triathlon

Look for a sprint/oly weekend July 10-12th weekend to tide you over between Mooseman and Timberman, too. Final details coming shortly

Keith and Bill thank you so much for the new info!!!

How cool is it that RDs come post and tell us what's coming!

NOT so happy about Patriot being moved up.  I understand why Eric is doing it, but that now makes it 2 weeks after Mooseman.....which might be a good thing as it would be the end of a build before tapering I suppose....

The two new sprints sound like their timing is perfect and I will be adding them in!

Thanks everyone for the input......time to go get ready for Duxbury - my last tri of this season....

if I can do 2 HIMS in 1 year which also were my 3rd and 4th tris ever then you can do it easy. .

I did get 6 weeks between each of them. 2 weeks I know is doable for marathons if you are in shape enough to do them and a HIM recovery seems faster than a marathon

hmm but is this the same drchaya who once said she was strictly a short course athlete? or perhaps my memory is wrong

i think it's awesome that you are going to go for 2 him's next season. i am thinking of Vineman 70.3 for next summer... I mainly think that since I'm still not that great a swimmer, might as well do a little longer swim and take advantage of the longer bike and run! Maybe crazy but I love the training.

good luck!

I totally agree re HIM - only 400 yards more swimming for twice the bike!!!!  too cool.

I will have to see if I can make it for your first him. It would be cool to race against the doc.

Seems totally reasonable to me and no, your not "whacked" for thinking of this.

See how easy it is to run a race on someone else's legs

Seriously, I know enough about your training base and your mojo and you will do great with that schedule. (I bet you crank out a big PR on the second HIM)

ok, so with the input from the RDs (thank you) here is the new and improved tentative schedule:

26-Apr-09  St. Anthony's Triathlon Olympic
6-Jun-09  Mooseman Triathlon Olympic
20-Jun-09  Patriot Triathlon Half Ironman
28-Jun-09  Cohasset Triathlon Sprint
11-Jul-09  KEJ new race sprint or olympic
8-Aug-09  Cape Ann Triathlon Sprint
23-Aug-09  Timberman Triathlon Half Ironman
late august  Cranberry County Tri Olympic
September  Duxbury Triathlon sprint

the bolded ones are the ones I am pretty certain about, the others not so much - not sure I can handle even a sprint a week after a HIM....

so, with 9 weeks between HIMs I feel pretty good - is an Olympic 2 weeks before a HIM ok? Does that make it part of my build?

thank you to all  for your input....
