These lists seem to come out every couple months, and the cities change...  Last I heard, it was Boulder/Denver area and Vegas was one of the fattest...

I know, right? I remember Houston, TX coming up a lot over the years for the fattest city...that shocks the heck out of me...

Oh we're pretty husky here in Houston.  Didn't shock me at all that we were #1.  I heard once that they judge the fattest cities by fast food restaurants per capita or square mile.  Something along those lines.

Having been born and raised in Dallas and schooled in Austin I can say that Austin is the thinnest in Texas, Dallas is about normal, and Houston is "whata-sized".

Typical stock photo.  Not real life, I'm sure.

Why is that though? (about Houston)

.

Lots of those fattest, etc. city polls deal with per capita dining out as well, of which Houston has always been high on. It's not like they went and weighed an entire city

Sharyn5 - 2010-05-24 6:22 PM I think many people here are health/fit conscious. Hmmm.

Go to the Wal Mart at US19 and Ridge Rd. That'll be the end of this thinking.

I'm not sure if you're commenting on the woman riding a skirt or heals, but it's crazy up here. Girls in the summer wear mini skirts on bikes wearing thongs (and sometimes not even that). Seriously? I don't need to see that. (Usually under aged teenage girls.)

I live in Houston and agree with all of this.  Not only do we have a crazy amount of restaurants but we have very few parks, almost no bike lanes and our mass transit sucks.  Cities with high mass transit do well because people have to walk to the bus stop/train station/subway.  I would LOVE it if my kids could walk to a bus stop and take a bus to the mall/movie theater/teen hang out of choice.  I live in the burbs but nowhere near out in the sticks and would have to drive at least 10 miles to find a bus route.

Husband and I spent last week in Taos, NM where we both noticed almost immediately there were no fat people.  Everyone looked in great shape.  Then we had to go to Walmart to pick up some items and there they were - the only fat people we ever saw in Taos.  The town has one McDs and that was the only fast food place, not a single Starbucks and plenty of activities close/walking distance to everything including good restaurants with lots of healthy options.

Ummm I have seen what is hanging around the Bus stops up and down Westheimer.   I don't want my kids anywhere near them.... But the bike lanes would be nice.

She has "Look" cleats attached to the bottom of those heels.  I can see them.

But, any woman who can cycle wearing those heels? Is alright by me. haha Yeah, I wonder where they get these polls? I was surprised about Washington, DC. I imagine many people cycle to work...but not sure why I found it surprising that they made #1

Woo-hoo!  Minneapolis is #3.  We were also named #1 Biking City by Bicycling Mag.  Pretty impressive considering the weather during the winter...

That said, I find plenty of pics from our suburban Wal-Marts on peopleofwalmart.  It's a Wal-Mart problem I think.

I have a bike like that and I ride to work all the time (3km) often in something just like that. I do wear a helmet though.

I thought about lugging my bike to Minneapolis for some rides.  I saw a long bike trail from Minneapolis to Alexander along some old rail road ROW.  Looks like I could get an easy century in during the summer.
