Can you insert a snippet of what you're asking about? Nevermind, I finally got it. I honestly can't tell you if they showed it when it happened or half an hour later. Does it matter that much? Uh yeah it really matters that much. When a US network can persuade the Olympic committee to change their entire swimming program to suit themselves and then not even show the race live it matters. Its affected the swimmers programs in the lead up etc. To change from the regular heats in the morning finals at night program that happens all around the world! plus on a purely selfish note, We get the swimming live and uninterupted and have done for all the olmypics I remember. I was incredibly disappointed when I heard the program had been changed for the US audiences. what about the rest of the worlds audiences don't we count too! |

Expert 1706 NoVA | Subject: RE: Can you guys confirm this for me? Well I from the quick skim of the link--NBC Los Angles is/might be the key----I say this because last night I was talking to my sister-in-law in SoCal at just after 11pm here in VA so it was 8pm on the West Coast....needless to say I was watching swimming live and her "Olympic coverage" was just starting and they were showing men's team gymnastics that I had watched live the night BEFORE.....so for whatever reason the west coast (LA) NBC stations aren't picking up the live stuff that they are showing on the east coast......as best I can tell......................... |

I'll remind you all of this thread. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=58385&start=1 My hide, it is chapped. NBC demanded that the swimming program be flipped so that they could show it live in the US. That's patently selfish. And now they don't even show it live. Here on the east coast of the US, for the last couple of nights, they haven't shown some of the semi-finals live, and in fact, I'm not sure some of them were shown at all. I never saw the men's or women's 200m breast. Maybe they could be sued for breach of contract? |

I think some of us are getting some of it live. So your face is chapped because they're only going live in a portion of the US? I would understand if they weren't live at ALL, but this seems like splitting hairs to me. Searching for something to be upset about. I, for one, am upset that the online TV listings for the Olympic broadcast in my area said that between 12:30AM and 4:10AM yesterday they were going to be showing the Men's Cycling Time Trials so I set the recorder up only to watch it yesterday and view footage of women's volleyball, gymnastics, and swimming which I had already seen the night before. |

I think some of us are getting some of it live. I'm not sure much of it at all is being shown live onthe west coast. To me, if NBC's justification for screwing with the swimmers is so that they can show it live in the US, they should show it live in the US. One of the races they didn't show at all, at least they didn't show it before they broke at midnight for local news, was the men's 200 breast semi. So, we didn't get to see Eric Shanteau, the kid swimming fresh off of a testicular cancer diagnosis. |

I need to look into it more, but I think it was only the finals they were making an attempt to show live, not the semis, etc. At least that's how I understood it to be before the Olympics started. I thought all the finals have been shown live, but I don't really know... |

They had a big lead in story about Eric Shanteau and then he didn't qualify for the finals. I don't believe it was live. If it was yesterday morning, it wasn't live. Semis are run in the finals session, mornings in Bejing. |

Subject: RE: Can you guys confirm this for me? No surprise, West Coast is never live. They want to show the events in "prime time," which in L.A., starts at 8. Phelps hasn't been shown before 10 pm all week. I've got other things to have a chapped hide about, this is what tivo is for. If FINA and the IOC don't have the balls to stand up to NBC (i.e., dollars in their eyes), swimmers and complainers should look to them, not NBC YMMV |

I for one was livid when the decision was made to change the program. To find out that its not even being shown live across the country is just disgraceful! why cause all the uproar changing the program around to suit 1 country/network to not even live up to their end of the bargain just disgusts me. I'm stuck at work sneaking down to the dining room to catch the LIVE coverage of all Swimming during work hours. and before anyone says it I know I'm going to get the Why do you hate USA line... |

I was angry at FINA/IOC when the decision was actually made but I got over that. Now hwen I find out that NBC hasn't held up their end of the bargain I'm angry at NBC. |

Subject: RE: Can you guys confirm this for me? Frankly, on the west coast US I think they are being considerate. If it were "live" it would be happening while people were at/driving home from work, and would miss it. So I think it's a good thing. So, I think NBC is being very patriotic by alloiwing the most number of consumers, err,. viewers, see the big races. As always, YMMV. |

I have absolutely no complaints about the coverage in fact with 2 channels covering the Olympics this year its been great. SBS channel(our tour de france coverage channel) broadcast both the mens and womens road races live from start to finish!! I spent last saturday glued to my television watching the road race! (very naughty! but I trained first so it was ok ) I can't believe they have blacked out net coverage! although I haven't actually checked if they are broadcasting on the net here. |

Expert 1014 Virginia | Subject: RE: Can you guys confirm this for me? honestly, being on the east coast and having it live isn't that great a thing. last night, the women's all round was over at 1am. granted, according to sports in america, those of us on the east coast love being up til 12 or 1am to watch tv. but it makes work the next day a pain. i'd rather they just left them alone and followed the tradition of where it sits and i'd just record it or watch what i could online (yes they definitely limit coverage of what is online here). instead, now it's live at a time where it's inconvenient for the majority of the live viewing audience and it's shown on a delay for the rest of the country. but i guess they won't care us us stupid east coasters stay up late to watch the stuff, sigh, can't win for losing. |

Subject: RE: Can you guys confirm this for me? Totally have to disagree[]QUOTE] Really, that's OK , the events that were changed were swimming and gymnastics becuase that is what they wanted us to view in primetime. Swimming started last night at 10:30 PM EST and gymnasts at around 11:30. That is 7:30 and 8:30 out on the west respectively. I know you guys have gridlock in SoCal but even in teh worst traffic you should be home. Clearly, never driven in L.A. traffic Super important question: for you guys on the west, does it say "LIVE" during the swimming and gymnastics in the upper right of your screen, or "recorded earlier? Don't think it shows either, but everyone on the west coast that is interested knows to avoid news outlets, and thus knows it's not "live." I don;'t think we can sue for misrepresentation ETA - i think the blackout on nbc.com is worse. But hey, as long as the olympics is a "product" and NBC bought the rights to air it, they can do what they want. As I said, if FINA/IOC thinks morning finals would hurt the athletes or affect their performance, they should have stood up to the mean peacock bully. Has any swimmer been negatively affected by the morning finals? Edited by ChrisM 2008-08-15 12:47 PM |
