Veteran 234 Newport News | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I wear mine as far down my wrist as possible to keep it visible and put it on after my suit is on. I destroyed a watch by having it under the suit and compression forced the lap button down allowing water to seep into it. I haven’t had any trouble pulling the suit off over the watch as I exit the water. Best thing to do is get your suit on and experiment with what works for you. Leave nothing new for race day!

Member 61 Chicago | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? Great question. I was waiting for an opportunity to relay my experience. I used to own a Timex Ironman, with the start/lap button on the face (like many other watches; don't mean to pick on Timex). When I took off my wetsuit during transition, the wetsuit accidentally brushed up against the start/lap button, screwing up my time. not a big deal because it just started a new lap, but something to consider when wearing a watch with the button on the face. |

Never had a problem. On an related note (and depending on your watch size): The timing chip I had in my first race of the season was ginormous. I could not believe how big this thing was. In that situation, I did put it on over my wetsuit, and quickly snapped it off and put it back on after wetsuit removal. I was not a huge fan of doing that...just figured so many things could go wrong..like forgetting to take it off/put it on, losing it in the lake, etc. But I really had no alternative. It would have easily gotten caught up in the suit upon removal. |

Extreme Veteran 1030 West Windsor, NJ | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I usually put the chip under the wetsuit..yes. But usually they arent the size of a matchbox car. Popping off the chip and putting it back on was fine and cost me zero time...so I may do that next time as well. It just took me out of my usual routine. Some people do complain about the timing chip getting caught up in the suit...I havent had that issue in the past. Edited by JohnAgs3 2010-06-03 12:24 PM |

For all the races i've been in and seen the timing chip is on a velcro ankle band. I can't remember but my wetsuit comes well above my ankle so it could be put on before or after. I think it's easier after though! |

Extreme Veteran 374 Southeast Michigan | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I used my new full body wetsuit for the first time yesterday. I put the wetsuit on over top of my watch. When I was done my right arm where I was wearing my watch seemed to be slightly puffed up as if some water got inside the suit there. I also seemed to have more trouble getting a proper reach with my right arm like I might normally do (the arm felt kind of heavy in the water and not from fatigue) and it seems that maybe that was the reason. It's just now occurring to me that perhaps the wetsuit was leaking water at the point where it went over top of the watch. Would it be better to push the sleeve up a couple of inches and put the watch on in front the wetsuit sleeve? Edited by mjohnson30 2011-06-17 10:49 AM |

Master 1799 Houston | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I'm doing the "garmin in the swim cap" trick that Dcrainmaker has on his site. I can hit the buttons through the cap, and in multi sport mode makes it easy to record S/B/R as well as T1 and T2 times. You have to put the watch on out of the water, but if you use a quick release kit then it should be quick. |

Veteran 259 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I use a Garmin 310XT so it is pretty big. I put on the wetsuit then fold back the sleeve and put the Garmin on and then fold the sleeve back over the watch. If I leave it out (low down on my wrist) my suit gets caught on it. I can start it through the suit or about two seconds before and pull the sleeve over. I do get a little more water in that sleeve but nothing that seems to make much difference. I do the same with my timing chip. Goes under the suit on my ankle so it doesn't get caught when removing the suit. |

If you need access to buttons wear it over. I have a Timex Global and wear it over the sleeve. On the run out of the water I take it off the sleeve, rip off the suit and replace on my naked, powerful wrist. Easy. |

Master 1704 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I wear a Timex Ironman watch under the wetsuit with the sleeve folded over 1" or so so I can see it in the water. Tip for getting it on/off easily...body glide the band! Never had a problem getting the suit off. |

Veteran 485 Elmira, ON | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I wear a garmin 920 which is a beast. I put the wetsuit on first but I like my ankle and wrists high as it gives more freedom to swim. (Less tension across the lats, etc.) So when I put my watch on, the wrists are already high and don't interfere. Same with the timing chip. Nointerference, and when you take your wetsuit off it just peels right over them. |

1520 Cypress, Texas | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? Originally posted by osbornb Here's the question. Where do you wear your watch during the swim. Do you put it on after the wetsuit (ie pull the arm back and where it underneath) if so then how do you start it? Do you wear it over the wetsuit and take it off in T1? I know this seems trivial but I am interested in hearing how folks navigate this. Thanks For training I have put in over the sleeve of the wet suit. I used it to time my swim intervals and rest intervals so it had to be where I could see it when I was stopped. In races I don't make any scheduled stops and trying to get it off before the wet suit peal is problematic. If you forget you have it on and start the peal then it gets rolled under the wet suit so you have to so a reverse peal take the watch off and peel again. if you do get it off where do you put it during the peal? I tried putting the wrist strap between my teeth once and it fell out so I had to gave back for it. Since I don't look at the watch during the swim I have been careful in putting in on under the sleeve of the wet suit. I don't start of stop the watch when it is under the wet suit for a race. I just wait until I am on the bike to start it as I pull out of transition. I also have just left the watch on the bike so I didn't have to worry about it during the swim and what not and then just start it when I get on the bike. I did a time trial this month. Like a race I had not plans to stop so I didn't need to see it during the swim. I however was doing an OWS and wanted to know what the swim distance and time were I was advised to put the GPS watch under the swim cap. That keeps it out of the water so it can transmit during a swim. With it under the swim cap i could hit all the big start/stop type button through the cap. |

24 Kingston Upon Thames, England | Subject: RE: Wearing a watch with a wetsuit? I completed my 1st Ironman recently, most just left their watch on then took it off/on in transition, as the time in an Ironman approx 10-30 seconds is not going to make much difference. I just took my Garmin watch off put it in my mouth removed arms from wetsuit and put it on again, 10 seconds I think. I would've put the watch under my wetsuit arm, but my wetsuit is tightly fitted which means I would have to loosen the watch strap to bring the watch further up the arm and this would be a problem in T1 anyway to readjust. if your entering a short triathlon then that's a different story, under the arm if possible. It's tricky problem. |
