While it's a must-have training tool, I've never worn one in a race. I'm considering starting to use one racing, but was wondering if there are any drawbacks to doing so. Advice appreciated. Thanks!

I use mine in races to keep me from blowing up on the bike. It is a very good pacing tool for oly and longer events. Probably not required for a sprint.

I use to use a HRM during races, but not anymore.  It can be useful to keep you from going to fast because of the excitment of the race.

I wear one just so I can download data later.  If I blow up in a race, I can check the data and maybe see why.

Other than that, for sprints or olys, I just go by feel and ignore the HR and just hammer.  It's going to be elevated due to the pressures of the race and other things, so it's better to just go by feel IMO.  Also, many times, during the run portion, my HR is actually lower than what my RPE would make me think it is.

For the longer races, it may be helpful to have something to check, but I still wouldn't be a slave to it.  I will wear mine for my IM as a reminder, but not a coach.

Only for longer races so far (HIM and above) and to keep my effort where I want it on the bike (I am not an experienced cyclist). I don't use for the run, I go by pace there FWIW. Cuidado-sometimes HRMs lie.

I wore mine for a marathon once, and it was elavated by about 20 bpm for the first 10 miles. This is based on what it should have been at the speeds I was going, based on my training runs. I think the excitement and the crowd can play a big role in your HR. Just something to keep in mind if you do wear it.

Not for everyone.

My advice:

Don't look at it in a race.  It will hold you back; training HR is not equal to racing HR.

Well, I suppose it depends on what you expect to see while racing. If you look to target a very aggressive heart rate, I find it's a great racing tool to ensure that I hold a high effort and not let myself slip.

I wear mine, but it is only one of a number of pieces of information I use to pace myself.

I agree with bryancd. I use my HR to make sure my pace is fast enough on the run. Coming off the bike, I think any pace on the feels hard, so I check my HR and compare it against previous races to make sure I'm pushing as hard as I know I can. If my HR is below 165 on the run, I'm not pushing hard enough.

Yes but more just out of interest that to gauge my effort.  I like to race on PE but the HR monitor will always tell me if I'm not going hard enough!  If it tells me I'm going too hard (ie. out of correct zone) then I just ignore it.

Not that I am anywhere near as fast as Bryan, this was my thought.  I don't race by HR, but I know if I look down and my HR is 165 in a 10K, I'm dogging it and use it to push me faster.

I agree with this, assuming you have race experience, and can correlate the numbers to how you feel.

For someone that doesn't, I find they have a tendency to try to go by training HR and zones, hence my original comment.

I wore a HRM in a race ONCE, mostly out of curiosity.

I've only done 1 tri (a sprint) and am doing my next one (another sprint) Sunday.  I wore mine during my last one and will do so again.  I just like to collect the data, see how it matches up with my timing chip and get my calories burned counted.

It's totally a personal preference, though.

Main advice is to use it in conjunction with your perceived effort.  There is a physiological effect, I think it is referred to as the Stahl effect or something like that, where initially your heart rate will be high until your body warms up such that your extremeties begin to dilate and receive more blood, then the heart rate will assume its normal rate that you are accustomed to seeing.  I pretty much don't look at it for the first mile or so.  After that I find it helps me measure my exertion pretty well.  I know what I can, when well conditioned, hold for a given distance and kind of use that as feedback while using perceived effort as my primary guide.

My HR doesn't go crazy in races, so the HRM usually tells me to crank it up a bit, if anything.

No. I don't race with a cycling computer, either. I just go out there and race. It is quite liberating

This brings up another question. Do you wear your chest strap during the swim or put it on in T2?? If you wear it during the swim, woukdnt it be too wet after the swim to register your heart rate?? Ive never tried this. Thanks guys!

i always wore the strap during the swim and had my garmin ready to go on the bike. on hims I turn garmin on when I get into transistion and in olys I turn it on before the swim.

I use it for speed and get a sense for cutoffs but I do not care about my exact time since the race results will tell me that. ( assuming I do not dnf)

IM or HIM - yea, I can see where this makes sense to use (disclosure- never done an Ironman so I am making a guess).  Sprint/oly distance - No, you don't need it.

I have found that my experience during a race (PE) is much more useful than heart rate measurements.  HRM training zones differ from training to race as much as they differ from sport to sport, so what you measure during training is not a good indicator to use while in a race.  Like I said, maybe for a full or half but not as usefull for a sprint or olympic.  This is an argument to learn to train using both your PE and HRM.

Let me add one drawback to paying too much attention to an HRM in a race.  In local road races in my past, I remember several riders who gave up when they were trying to jump from the peloton because they thought their heart rate showed that they should slow down instead. In hindsight, many of them said later that they felt they could have broken away.

i wear the hrm during oly and HIM races to make sure I am keeping a solid effort going. it helps me to have another piece of reasonably objective data that I use in addition to pace and rpe to monitor, assess, and make decisions.

i wear the chest strap in the water under my tri suit and wet suit. i use some hrm cream goo stuff that seems to help the electrodes get an accurate reading a bit quicker out of the water.

my HR is definitely higher in a race than training, but you should be able to figure what "hr zone" you want to race in and use the hrm to keep you there.

Ive done it both ways and Ive had better races when I use it. I see it as a tach, I can glance down and know if I should be going harder or easier based on previous races and trainin runs. The races I didnt use it I let up some thinking I was going harder than I actually was.

I started wearing my Garmin this year for my tris.  Like others I don't pay much attention to HR during Sprints and Olys but checking the data afterwards is useful.  I had my first HIM this past weekend and used the HR on the bike to monitor effort.  I did not use HR data on the run.  I really like the avg pace on my Garmin for the run to keep my effort where I want it to be, making sure I'm not going too easy.  I also use it for all my standalone running races but not for the HR rather the pace/distance.

I wear the heartrate strap during the swim and leave the Garmin on my bike.  I setit up for a bike/transition/run multisport event.
